Doctor Who - The Twelfth Doctor to be Announced Soon

Jun 3, 2013

The new Doctor could be handed the keys to the TARDIS as early as next month BBC sources have confirmed - with insiders suggesting that Matt Smith’s replacement needs to be announced before the Doctor Who Christmas special begins filming next month.

“The search has begun in earnest and is active now,” the source said, adding that the BBC has not ruled out hiring a woman doctor to replace Matt Smith.

The decision will be made by a small team of BBC executives and kept under wraps. It will be decided by showrunner Steven Moffat, Danny Cohen, the BBC’s new head of television, controller of drama commissioning Ben Stephenson, casting director Andy Pryor and the show’s incoming executive producer Brian Minchin.

The new series, expected to be 12 episodes long begins filming in the autumn.

A BBC source also moved to squash speculation that showrunner Steven Moffat could also be calling it a day insisting that he has signed up for at least another year.

In his statement on Smith’s departure, Moffat said: "Great actors always know when it's time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break as we say goodbye to number 11. Thank you Matt - bow ties were never cooler."

Whoever takes the role one actor considered to be one of the favourite in the early betting has already ruled himself out. Episodes and Green Wing star Stephen Mangan recently told Twitter: “I see I’m 14/1 to be the new Doctor. Don’t waste your money.”

  1. I agree that they will have to announce, keeping it secret is going to be an impossibility imo. Part of me hopes that it is Mangan, I think he'd be a great choice, as would Alex Vlahos if they did want to go younger again this time.

  2. I have no idea who it will be but odds are The Doctor won't be a woman or a ginger. :)

  3. I didn't expect it to be so soon, but I'm glad it it.
I just hope they won't cast a woman to play the Doctor. I would really mind if they did.

  4. I am really debating with myself if I already want to know who the knew doctor will be, or if I want to be susprised in a year.
On the other hand, it might be impossible to avoid the spoilers if I keep visiting this site ^_^

  5. The Doctor seems to be visually getting younger as he gets older. I like the thought of an older doctor again, but if they continue to go with the younger Doctor, I hope he has that same young and old look that Matt has. Sometimes Matt just looks tired or wise beyond his years and still looks 28, it's amazing. I also hope he's not a teenager (I don't know why I don't like the idea of it).

  8. Yeah I like knowing in advance so you can get used to it and also so the speculation doesn't go on for months.

  10. Idris Elba, Adrian Lester are 2 I'd like to see. What I would really like is for the Donna to get her memories back and become the Doctor, because I loved Donna.

  11. It would be great if he is the new doctor, though he might be a bit too old for the role, who knows.

Why have they reduced the episode count??? I hope the 12 doesn't include the christmas special.

  14. They say it does, but I sure hope it's normal 12 episode season + a Christmas special. It'd be unfair after a whole year of celebration and specials and events to have such a small season.

  15. I don't think I want to know until we see it onscreen. But even if you don't visit this site, they'll be spoilers out there somewhere

  17. If you think you can avoid all newspapers, all facebook posts, all twitter posts, all radio broadcasts, all news broadcasts, every media site on the internet, every Doctor Who fan, YouTube, Tumblr... I loved being surprised on the night by David Tennant back in 2005, I'd LOVE to be surprised again and not know, but nowadays nothing stays secret for more than... say... 7 seconds! :(

  18. Well I live in the Netherlands where the show isn't very known and my friends don't watch Doctor Who. The show doesn't receive a lot of media coverage here, so I think I'm pretty safe on the home front :D
So the only spoilers I will get is via the Internet ^^

  20. That's not possible.

  21. There's usually 13 episodes and a Christmas special though.

  22. I really think they'll go with someone who doesn't have a 'big' name whether male or female.
