It's the question on everyone's mind: Does
Dexter have to die in the end?
Sara Colleton: I'm not trying to be evasive, but no matter how I answer, it will be indicative of where our thinking lies. Believe me, it's been a huge debate for eight years. We know what we've decided, but we've also had to accept that we can only please ourselves because no matter what we do, there will be people and critics who hate it, but we're doing what we feel is right for his series-long arc and what we want to say about Dexter, and by way of Dexter, about being a human being. We feel we have the right ending.
How long have you known this ending?
Sara Colleton: It's been debated, but starting at the end of Season 6, we knew where we were going.

Surprised to hear her speak so casually about everything, they're usually more tight-lipped.
ReplyDeleteDisappointing about Lumen. I think she could've come back as an ally, especially if Dexter's secret was revealed.
it would have been nice to see lumen again, but i agree that there really wasnt much story left there.. at least not pertaining to dexter. im glad hannah coming back, and until it doesnt happen, ill just keep hoping that lumen shows up and saves dexter by killing hannah haha
ReplyDeleteI hope he survives. And he, Deb and Harry will be a happy family. Call me a dreamer with a thing for happy ends (which I'm mostly not), but that's the end I wish for Dex and Deb.
ReplyDeleteDeb is in a dark place. I hope Dex can fix it. "The one constant in Dexter's life has been his sister Deb. He cannot function unless he has Deb in his life" I so love their relationship. I want them back together. Either as brother and sister or as lovers, I don't care. One of the things I like about this show is, how close they always were. I mean, the literally killed for each other.
Dex is not a cold blooded sociopath. Never was. If he were, he could never had any kind of feelings for Deb, Rita, Harry, Ritas kids, his son… He wouldn't even be able to follow the code. He wouldn't care who he kills. He wouldn't care for Deb or his son. But I won't deny that he does have sociopathic tendencies. He barely has feelings and he's faking most of his relationships. But he's not a complete sociopath like Rudy or Trinity.
"Politicians and financiers have very sociopathic personalities and that's what's allowed civilization to advance" Maybe 100 years ago. Now we're returning to the Middle Ages, where 1 or 2% have all, while the other 99 or 98% suffer and starve. "Well, if all these people can be successful without killing people..." Yes, but how many people die because of them? So they can have more money and power? I personally see a difference between a psychopath killing another person and a company letting people die for profit (like using poisonous chemicals in toys or clothes cause it's cheaper). The second kind is way worse.
If Dex has to die (I hope not) I would love a spin-off with Deb, taking her brothers place.
Then we read different interviews. She didn't say anything, we haven't heard before. They let us speculate about Dex dying at the end, we know that 6 months passed, that Dex and Deb have problems and he wants to fix them, that Vogel wrote the code and is stalked by a killer and she needs Dex help, that Hannah returns, … We heard it all before.
ReplyDeleteAgree on Lumen. From all his girls, I liked her most. Rita was sweet, but naïve, Lila and Hanna were hot, but psychopaths, he will probably always see Deb as his sister. True, Lumed used him as he used her. But she never lied to him, never pretended to be something else.
I wasn't talking about the Season 8 interviews, I mean in previous years.
ReplyDeleteAnd I haven't been keeping up with this year's interviews, so this was all new to me.
Lastly, I actually prefer Hannah to Lumen (probably because she's hotter) because of how well the drama played out between them.
Do you see what I see is one of my favorite episodes of the entire series because of that argument and how real it felt.
True, Hannah is probably the hottest of his girls. But, as I said, I like Lumen most cause she accepted his darkness, without being a psychopath herself. Well, she partly accepted it. After her darkness was gone, she couldn't handle his anymore. Hannah loved him cause he was a killer like her and she knew he will keep her secret, cause he has the same secret. And Lila was attracted to him before she knew that he's a killer, but she sensed the darkness in him. And when she learned the truth, she didn't mind. It's been a while, but didn't she said something like "Poor thing" or something like that?
ReplyDeleteWhat I hated about Hannah was, that she killed only for her own benefit. It was for her the easiest way of solving problems. And, of course, she got between Dex and Deb. To me that's an unforgivable crime.
Yes about Lila.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing I will say about Lumen is that scene in Dexter where she breaks up with him is the only scene that has ever made me cry. Like, not just tear up, tears streaming down my face, because it reminded me so much of situations I've been in where girls have broken up with me and how hurt Dexter was. They got the tone in that scene exactly right.
And the thing with Hannah that worked for me is I have an older sister and I've had girlfriends that have come between me and her, so I could relate to that family VS love part of the relationship.
So its really a case of me being able to relate to what they made Dexter go through.
I kind of hope that Lumen could be the one to get the spin off, since she is one character where they have potential to really expand on who she really was/is and if her revenge was really over...(she actually is my favorite character outside of Deb and Dex)
ReplyDeleteBut I keep hoping that there could be other loose ends. Jonah Mitchell being one that I think could be really beneficial, especially if Brian themes/elements also resurface.
I agree that there's something to casual about this interview let alone how freely they have been giving information about Dr. V and the Big Bad this year...It makes me think there are other BIG things they're just not telling us.
She was exceptionally breezy when asked about other character deaths too, which worries me...especially of there ends up being foreshadowing with Masuka!
I'm just hoping you're right and she hasn't gone soft or something in these recent interviews.
ReplyDeleteYes, the breakup made me cry too. It was horrible. I was so glad that Dex found someone who not only knew his darkest secret, but also accepted it and could live with it. It's what he always wanted. And it was another prove that he's not a sociopath. If he were, he wouldn't care. He would say "Yes, okay, goodbye" or he would have just killed her (Rule no.1: Don't get caught). But he was hurt.
ReplyDeleteWhat I liked about Hanna was the same I liked about Lumen (except the part that Hannah was a psychopath and lumen wasn't). He didn't need to pretend. He could be himself. She saw and knew his darkness and accepted it.
So you and you're sister are close? That's nice. I have an older (way older) brother I barely see. We were never close. That is why I like the Dex/Deb relationship so much. It's something I wanted and never had.
Yeah we are. Not as much as Dex/Deb (I don't see her all the time because I'm in college and she lives in a different city married with a kid), but we've had our moments.
ReplyDeleteI get the impression you're a girl?
Yes, I am.
ReplyDeleteWasn't my name (Kiara) a hint? ;)
I hope I'm right too! XD
