    They keep pronouncing di Medi´ci. Thought it was di Me´dici. Does anybody know Italian well. If so, please tell me where the accent goes. Is it the second syllable or the first?

    It's a pickle to spell in Itallian but the actual pronunciation should go something like Famigilia de' MED-i-chee putting the emphasis on the 'Med'

    Thank you. I studied Italian in the 60's and went to Italy in 1972. In Romance languages like Italian & Spanish the accent is usually next to the end, but there are exceptions to the rule. The reason I asked was because I have heard it the way you said, but inasmuch this is a British production they used the rule and not the exception.

    I'm Italian. The correct spell is de Me-di-ci, the accent goes on the 1st syllabe. In Italian language varies a lot and so the meaning of the words (e.g. ancora - accent on the 1st syllabe - means anchor but ancora - accent on 2nd syllabe - means "again"), so you see it's not so easy to pronounce Italian correctly.Any other query you may have I'm ready to help!

    Thank you. I agree with you entirely. That is the way I
    remember hearing it. I did study Italian between 64 and 66
    and went to Italy in '72. I went from the north Italian border (Bolzano) all the way to Naples. The best accent I found
    was in Florence & Sienna. They thought I was a native.
    The only thing I had to stay away from was the subjunctive
    because I could not finish studying it because I moved away
    from the area. In Bolzano it was very staccato. In Florence
    it was the way I learned. In Rome it was very mushy and
    in Naples, I could not understand very well. It seems there
    the natives spoke mostly with their hand. Thanks again.

    Yes it's all true. I live near Milan, this is the italian area where you can better understand our language. In Tuscany we say that they "eat" the letter "C" (e.g. they pronounce Coca Cola "hoha hola" with the "H" like the word "hero"!), the more you go to South of Italy the less you can understand due to their ugly accent...I agree with you when you say that in Naples they speak with the hands: for Italian people it's sooo difficult to understand what they say, but Naples is another world!

    For what concerns the conjunctive don't worry about it: the 90% of Italian people have difficulty to learn and use it. Italian grammar is very elaborate and intricate, so difficult to study, even for us natives!
