The Vampire Diaries - Season 4 Finale - Julie Plec Interview

1 May 2013

“It’s difficult to throw an event in Mystic Falls without it going catastrophically awry, but one of the things that was really important to us is that we do give this event itself its due,” says executive producer Julie Plec, who cowrote the episode with Caroline Dries. “We approached this episode, in its own way, like a series finale because our character’s graduating from high school is a shift in the show to open up a lot of new storytelling opportunities and new environments. So we really wanted to be able to get all the emotion out of this episode that we could before we move on to a different life. We made sure that in spite of everything that’s going on in the midst of it, we still get those great friendship moments and nostalgia moments that I, as a fan of TV over the decades, loved so much on high school shows as you reached that milestone.”

Will there be a death at graduation? “There will definitely be an altercation resulting in some blood loss, but that’s about all I can say,” Plec teases.

From the episode synopsis, we know that Mystic Falls will be “overrun with ghosts intent on settling old scores and fulfilling their supernatural destinies.” They’ll begin to appear in the May 9 episode, appropriate titled “The Walking Dead.” Says Plec, “Part of Silas’ plan to drop the veil — and Bonnie’s effort to either help him or stop him — they kind of blow up in everybody’s face in ‘The Walking Dead,’ and we get our first glimpses of what would happen if this veil fell completely. We start to have some ghosts coming through from the other side. It’s a nice collection of faces that will make us happy, and then some faces that we thought we probably shouldn’t see again because they’re up to no good.” (So they are technically ghosts? “It’s the same way we’ve done in the past when they break their way through from the other side, they have corporeal form,” Plec explains. “It’s just that if you kill them and the veil’s down, they can just walk right back through. So they’re kind of indestructible.”)

Someone will finally take the cure for vampirism in the finale. Plec won’t say whether the third time is a charm for Rebekah. “I will tell you that we started the season having firmly decided exactly who was gonna get the cure, and about halfway through the season, we changed our minds,” she says.

  1. I'm am absolutely dreading the fate of that damn cure. The only person I can think of whom I'd be okay with taking it would be Katherine. Other than her, I don't want a single vampire to so much as touch that godforsaken cure.

  2. The character I mostly DON'T want to take it is Caroline. She is so much better as a vamp!

I know everyone hates vampire Elena, specially feeling-less vampire Elena, but if they turned her only to reset everything by seasons end, I am so done with this show, and for real this time, not for only a few episodes like when then made sired to Damon.

  4. I have a horrible feeling that somehow Damon will end up ingesting the cure. After his declaration that being human again would be "the most miserable thing on Earth" I figured that's exactly what Julie Plec is going to do to him.

  5. I don't think Elena is getting the cure.

  6. Guys, will Julie leave TVD after this season?

  7. That's what I have been thinking too but now that I read thaht she changed her mind halfway through the season I'm starting to consider Stefan as an eligible candidate for the cure...Maybe ONCE in the show she will spare Damon!

  8. My thinking is that she originally intended to give it to Stefan and changed her mind to Damon. Plec said she changed her mind halfway through and that statement Damon made about not wanting the cure came just after the halfway point in the season.

  9. I have the same fear.

I certainly hope not, then we would be back to dreadful whiny Elena, and even though I didn't think there was anything I would hate more than that, your theory about it being Damon made to the top of my list. I'm sorry, but Damon is too cool of a vampire to turn him human again.

  11. Agreed on all counts.

  12. Did Kevin Williamson just quit this show?

  13. Since the beginning of the thing with the cure I knew it will be Damon taking it. I guess he get bite by Mason and since Klaus isn´t there to cure him with his blood, he take the cure otherweise he will die

  14. Yes, he has "The Following" now

  15. Well yeah He said that in episode 13 or 14 I think..So maybe you're right. I certainly hope not. Imagine a human Damon...

  16. Well this is going to rack a lot of people mind , Well I guess we all need to wait .

  17. I know, but I wish he was still apart of this show -- at least as a consultant. Part of me feels like season 3 and 4 would have been a lot different.

  18. Yeah, after his leaving TVD lost it's edge. I have a feeling JP doesn't know what to do with this show and thus there is no normal plot and producers make ratings toying with fandoms. Like she said, her and KW made up an end of the series in the early season 2,so now she's just trying to fill it to lead us to that end...

  19. You could very well be right and I hope like hell that you're not. :)

  20. "So they are technically ghosts? “It’s the same way we’ve done in the past when they break their way through from the other side, they have corporeal form,” Plec explains. “It’s just that if you kill them and the veil’s down, they can just walk right back through. So they’re kind of indestructible.”" So what are they? Ghosts or flesh and blood? I think JP doesn't know what they supposed to be. Or even how she should set it. Dropping the veil should bring them back. Now she says only some of them come back? She can't just change rules as she pleases. She planned an apocalypse with resurrected sups. Now she sees she can't go thru with it, but it's too late to change the plan, so she changes the rules an
brings some of them back, like there is someone deciding who gets thru and who doesn't. Ridiculous.
This interview was a waste of time. She tells us nothing.

  21. Agree. Just hate how she behaves now. With Klaus and all.

  22. He didn't really quit. He just scaled back his involvement to a large degree. He mainly serves as a consultant these days.

  23. Even with The Originals and The Tomorrow People? Oh lord, 5th is gonna be a mess.

  24. my money is on Katherine being the one that gets cured.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's probably Katherine. Giving her the cure could be a way of concluding her story and moving on to other things.
I think giving Damon the cure will break the show.
