Last week's superb penultimate episode of the second season of Scandal simply demolished its previous series record for both ratings and audience. It earned a 3.2 adults 18-49 rating, and 8.87 million viewers. That's a 0.4 ratings increase on the previous ratings record, and almost 400,000 more viewers tuned in than for the previous audience record.
Last week's episode also out-rated its lead-in, Grey's Anatomy, by 0.1 of a ratings point, and fell just 100,000 viewers short of eclipsing Grey's Anatomy's 8.97 million viewer audience.
This season has seen a ratings average of 2.47 from the 21 episodes that have aired. This is incredible when you consider the fact that the first 7 episodes of the season only averaged a 2.04 rating. For the record, the last 14 episodes have averaged a massive 2.69 rating, which is an amazing increase when compared to such a quiet start to the season. A lot of this is down to ABC employing excellent marketing techniques, like the stunning Oscars promo, and increases in social media use, with Scandal being right up there with the most discussed shows in the US. I hope so. The hype about the finale in the media is insane.
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought "how they can break another record after last week's WONDERFUL numbers?!". Plus the ratings weren't really good(not to mention breaking) for finale of any ABC show. But hey, it's Scandal, this show was doing great this season and its rating tendency was exactly the opposite of other shows. Also grey's Anatomy has a history of increasing in rating for the finales so this can help Scandal too. And on top of that all, the promotion during this week was enormous and the finale itself looks really interesting. So I think there is a pretty big chance that any previous record will be broken.
