Today's Early Overnight Ratings

This table shows the early overnight ratings. These ratings are normally adjusted later in the day when all the ratings have been consolidated to take into account any local preemptions and/or overruns. You can find all the final adjusted numbers in our Ratings Database. (See the About section below for details about ratings)

Early Ratings Analysis

The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

For more information on the Nielsen Ratings see this Wikipedia Entry.

NOTE: The opinions expressed here are NOT those of SpoilerTV but of the Author of this Article, Marc Berman.

Metered Market Results

Rating/Share
Fox 7.5/12
CBS 6.3/10
NBC 5.1/ 8
ABC 4.6/ 7
CW 1.7/ 3

———-

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Wednesday 5/10/12:
CW: +89, NBC: +50, CBS: -10, NBC: -15, Fox: -33

———-

-Winners:
“The Voice” (NBC), “Survivor: Caramoan” (CBS), “Arrow” (CW), “Modern Family” (ABC), “Criminal Minds” (CBS), “CSI” (CBS)

-Fading Fast:
“American Idol” (Fox)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Family Tools” (ABC)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
Two-hours of diluted “American Idol” led Fox to another Wednesday overnight victory, with a 7.5 rating/12 share from 8-10 p.m. But, year-to-year, that was a loss of a hefty 33 percent. And a 6.0/10 for competing “The Voice” from 8-9 p.m. on NBC should be more than enough to hold a wide advantage over the first half of “American Idol” among adults 18-49 (and other key young adult demos).

Despite facing “The Voice,” CBS’ consistent “Survivor” Caramoan” remained just that at a second-place 6.1/10, which was just five percent below the year-ago evening. SPOILER ALERT: Skip the remainder of this paragraph if you have not seen the episode of “Survivor” yet. For a series on the air for 12 years, the outcome of that tribal council last night was one of the most brutal yet addictive events in history of reality television. While the goal of any season is to outwit, outplay and outlast, Dawn voting out Brenda means the once beloved contestant is now nothing more than a sobbing villainess. At least Cochran was wise enough to speak more honestly at tribal. Note to Dawn: If you do make it to the top 2, better have plenty of Kleenix handy. You deserve to be skewered.

In week two news, competing ABC sitcom “Family Tools” sunk to a 3.5/ 6 in the overnights at 8:30 p.m., which was 15 percent below its already disappointing debut (4.1/ 7 on May 1) and 26 percent below lead-in “The Middle” (#4, 4.7/ 8 at 8 p.m.). Tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking. Over at The CW was competing “Arrow” at a solid 2.0/ 3, which was a massive 186 percent above year-ago time period occupant “America’s Next Top Model: British Invasion” (0.7/ 1 on 5/09/12).

At 9 p.m., veteran “Criminal Minds” on CBS, which is still in conversations to renegotiate contracts, finished second overall behind “American Idol” with a 6.5/10 from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that was 12 percent below the 7.4/11 on the year-ago evening. The standout on ABC, of course, was “Modern Family” at a 6.7/10 in the 9 p.m. half-hour (#2), which will also likely beat competing “American Idol” among adults 18-49. But recently introduced lead-out “How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life”) slipped a fourth-place 4.2/ 7 at 9:30 p.m., which put the overnight retention out of “Modern Family” at 63 percent. One year earlier, however, former time period occupant “Don’t Trust the B____ in Apartment 23” held only 58 percent of the “Modern Family” lead-in (4.4/ 7 vs. 7.6/12).

With improved lead-in support (yes…it still matters), “Law & Order: SVU” on NBC perked up to a 4.7/ 7 (#4) from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, “SVU” was 114 percent above year-ago occupant “Rock Center With Brian Williams” (2.2/ 3 on 5/09/12). And “Supernatural” on The CW capped off the hour with a last-place 1.4/ 2, which was 30 percent below lead-in “Arrow.” The young adult demo retention, however, should be closer.

Tops in the overnights at 10 p.m. was granddaddy “CSI” on CBS at a 7.2/12, which was up by 16 percent year-to-year. Next was “Chicago Fire” on NBC at a 4.5/ 8, which remains a flawless fit out of “Law & Order” SVU,” followed by on-the-fence “Nashville” on ABC at a 4.1/ 7. To renew or not to renew: that is the question ABC faces with “Nashville,” which could snag a second season based on the potential Emmy attention.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) we post the TV Ratings for the previous night.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)

  1. I am glad for Arrow (which I am enjoying even though it is a CW show :) ) and Criminal Minds. I also like Modern Family, but it hasn't been the same IMO, so I don't feel so strongly about it.

    It should still do alright.

  3. Hopefully, but I won't be surprised if it reaches a new low today and I won't be surprised if SPN beats it again either since SPN didn't face The Voice. I hope those that watched The Voice instead will instead DVR.

Yeah, but next week is the finale, so it should bounce back if it does.

  5. I don't think you Arrow fans have anything to worry about, tbh. This show is going to be on for many years. (That's if The CW hasn't collapsed by then). If the ratings do somehow collapse, maybe during S3 or something, it will still be renewed till at least a 4th season for syndication purposes. But, I can't see the ratings going that bad, and as long as The CW lives, I think Arrow will too. (note, I don't even watch the show, lol, but its ratings are great for The CW).

  6. ITA only show currently capable of breaking 3 mil total live, plus there's DC corporate synergy behind it. Arrow will live however long it wants.

  7. Oh yeah, Family Tools is definitely dead. That's not good at all. How To Live With Your Parents is probably dead too.

Glad Nashville and SPN did well.

  8. Aroow Is doing good In overall numbers for the CW but seems stuck at 0.9 In Demo.Of course If the vampire diaires tonight also get a 0.9 In demo that means 0.9 Is best CW can do In Demo.

  9. I would argue that the 0.9 it got this week is better than the one it got last week. It was going up against the voice. That is definitely an extra challenge. I am impressed that it hasn't fallen.

  10. Why would How to Live be dead? A 2.0 rating is more than fine in the universe of ABC comedies to get it renewed. And if you want to talk about lead-ins, it got a 65% retention out of MF, I don't think that is bad at all.

  11. The ratings keep dropping (They went back up after Modern Family returned) but they were in 1.0 range when the show was in repeats for two weeks.

  12. Eidnoreid Pills9 May 2013 at 17:19

    It's lead in dependent.

  13. Eidnoreid Pills9 May 2013 at 17:21

A 0.9 is still fine. I wouldn't start panicking unless it somehow sinks to a 0.4-0.5, but it seems to be relatively steady at 0.9-1.0.

  14. all shows would rise with the MF lead-in

    ReplyDelete
  15. Wrong. It had a 2.0 the first week of repeats and a 1.5 the second - this does not classify as 1.0 range. Also, how come achieving the same rating that it had achieved after a repeat two weeks ago makes it lead-in dependent? This is a 5 weeks show, of course it needs its lead-in to perform well. But MF was down 0.5 point and How to Live was practically the same (0.1 down). How come that is down? This, in spite of upticks in competing shows on CBS and NBC.

For the record, I have never watched the show and I don't think is a powerful hit or anything - I just think that it had one of its best relative performances last night. Suburgatory (which I do like) hasn't had a rating 2.0 or higher since February and MF was almost 1 full point higher when it happened (3.9), not to mention viewership levels were also higher in winter.

Yes, but some shows can hold its' own.

  17. " And “Supernatural” on The CW capped off the hour with a last-place 1.4/ 2, which was 30 percent below lead-in “Arrow.” The young adult demo retention, however, should be closer."

nope, according to final ratings, supernatural gain 1.0, higher than its lead in, guess Marc should evaluate the possibiltiy of spn having higher rating or same rating with Arrow more often.
sad note though, after the rating is out, Marc's website took down Arrow from the winner column.

  18. Glad for all the shows tonight. Bye bye Family Tools.

Generally toned down comments from Marc

  19. That's Arrow's lowest overnight ratings. It unfortunately faced The Voice, AI, Survivor and NBA competition at this hour.
