-Ratings Breakdown:
Two-hours of diluted “American Idol” led Fox to another Wednesday overnight victory, with a 7.5 rating/12 share from 8-10 p.m. But, year-to-year, that was a loss of a hefty 33 percent. And a 6.0/10 for competing “The Voice” from 8-9 p.m. on NBC should be more than enough to hold a wide advantage over the first half of “American Idol” among adults 18-49 (and other key young adult demos).

Despite facing “The Voice,” CBS’ consistent “Survivor” Caramoan” remained just that at a second-place 6.1/10, which was just five percent below the year-ago evening. SPOILER ALERT: Skip the remainder of this paragraph if you have not seen the episode of “Survivor” yet. For a series on the air for 12 years, the outcome of that tribal council last night was one of the most brutal yet addictive events in history of reality television. While the goal of any season is to outwit, outplay and outlast, Dawn voting out Brenda means the once beloved contestant is now nothing more than a sobbing villainess. At least Cochran was wise enough to speak more honestly at tribal. Note to Dawn: If you do make it to the top 2, better have plenty of Kleenix handy. You deserve to be skewered.

In week two news, competing ABC sitcom “Family Tools” sunk to a 3.5/ 6 in the overnights at 8:30 p.m., which was 15 percent below its already disappointing debut (4.1/ 7 on May 1) and 26 percent below lead-in “The Middle” (#4, 4.7/ 8 at 8 p.m.). Tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking. Over at The CW was competing “Arrow” at a solid 2.0/ 3, which was a massive 186 percent above year-ago time period occupant “America’s Next Top Model: British Invasion” (0.7/ 1 on 5/09/12).

At 9 p.m., veteran “Criminal Minds” on CBS, which is still in conversations to renegotiate contracts, finished second overall behind “American Idol” with a 6.5/10 from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that was 12 percent below the 7.4/11 on the year-ago evening. The standout on ABC, of course, was “Modern Family” at a 6.7/10 in the 9 p.m. half-hour (#2), which will also likely beat competing “American Idol” among adults 18-49. But recently introduced lead-out “How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life”) slipped a fourth-place 4.2/ 7 at 9:30 p.m., which put the overnight retention out of “Modern Family” at 63 percent. One year earlier, however, former time period occupant “Don’t Trust the B____ in Apartment 23” held only 58 percent of the “Modern Family” lead-in (4.4/ 7 vs. 7.6/12).

With improved lead-in support (yes…it still matters), “Law & Order: SVU” on NBC perked up to a 4.7/ 7 (#4) from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, “SVU” was 114 percent above year-ago occupant “Rock Center With Brian Williams” (2.2/ 3 on 5/09/12). And “Supernatural” on The CW capped off the hour with a last-place 1.4/ 2, which was 30 percent below lead-in “Arrow.” The young adult demo retention, however, should be closer.

Tops in the overnights at 10 p.m. was granddaddy “CSI” on CBS at a 7.2/12, which was up by 16 percent year-to-year. Next was “Chicago Fire” on NBC at a 4.5/ 8, which remains a flawless fit out of “Law & Order” SVU,” followed by on-the-fence “Nashville” on ABC at a 4.1/ 7. To renew or not to renew: that is the question ABC faces with “Nashville,” which could snag a second season based on the potential Emmy attention.

Each day (except Sunday) we post the TV Ratings for the previous night.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
