-Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy Thursday overnight victory for CBS, but not a clean sweep in every half-hour. Red-hot “The Big Bang Theory,” featuring a guest shot by the legendary Bob Newhart, topped the night, with a 10.8 rating/18 share at 8 p.m. Comparably, that was up by 16 percent year-to-year. Next was just renewed “Two and a Half Men” at a dominant 8.1/13 at 8:30 p.m. (up 40 percent from year-ago occupant “Rules of Engagement”), followed by sophomore “Person of Interest” at a winning 8.6/14 from 9-10 p.m.

Although the Eye net’s freshman “Elementary” led the 10 p.m. hour overall with a 6.3/11 (three percent ahead of the 6.1/11 for competing “Scandal” on ABC), by 10:30 p.m. “Scandal” inched past “Elementary” (6.1/11 vs. 6.0/11). And “Scandal” will have no trouble holding a considerable lead among adults 18-49 (and other key young adult demos). “Scandal” is a “winner;” “Elementary” (which will likely be shipped off to Friday next season) is not.

There was two season finales last night: “Wife Swap” on ABC and “Parks and Recreation” on NBC. Although ABC could keep cost effective “Wife Swap” in production as a utility player, the third-place 2.7/ 4 in the overnights at 8 p.m. does not warrant a spot on the fall schedule. “Parks and Recreation” rated lower, with a fourth-place 2.2/ 3 at 9:30 p.m. (out of a 2.7/ 4 — also No. 4 — for soon-to-conclude “The Office” at 9 p.m.). But since NBC will return next fall without “30 Rock” and “The Office,” chances are the critically acclaimed “Parks and Recreation” will also return.

Earlier in the evening on NBC was sluggish “Community” with a fourth-place 2.0/ 3 at 8 p.m., followed by another episode of “The Office” at a 2.6/ 4 (#4) at 8:30 p.m. Recently introduced drama “Hannibal” (which has sparked some interest via DVR usage) could not compete, with a very last-place 2.0/ 3 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, that was only a slight improvement over failed year-ago occupant “Awake” (1.8/ 3 on 5/03/12).

In order for NBC to effectively compete next season, it must concentrate on finding something stronger to open the evening with.

ABC, meanwhile, was on the 9 p.m. map care of veteran “Grey’s Anatomy” with a second-place 6.4/10. Comparably, “Grey’s” built from the 8:30 p.m. portion of “Wife Swap” (2.7/ 4) by 137 percent. And it dipped from the year-ago evening (7.0/11 on 5/03/12) by only nine percent.

Over at Fox, the live “American Idol” Results Show finished second from 8-9 p.m., with a 7.9/13. Comparably, that was 27 percent below the 10.8/18 on the year-ago evening. Tired “Glee” followed with a third-place 3.7/ 6 at 9 p.m., which was 12 percent below year-ago occupant “Touch” (4.2/ 7 on 5/03/12). And the retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “American Idol” (8.3/14) was only 45 percent. A two-season renewal…really?

The CW closed the night with its renewed combination of “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.7/ 3), which is worthy of its pick-up, and “Beauty and the Beast” (#5: 1.1/ 2), which is not.
