-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox got over the Wednesday “hump” in winning fashion, beating No. 2 CBS by 1.5 overnight rating points. And veteran “American Idol” faced off against both “Survivor” Caramoan” on CBS and “The Voice” on NBC in the 8 p.m. hour and won the battle. But before anyone makes any judgments, keep in mind that “The Voice” was a clips show and “American Idol” slipped by 28 percent year-to-year.

Overall, “American Idol” averaged an 8.0 rating/13 share from 8-10 p.m., with a 7.6/13 in the 8 p.m. hour. Second from 8-9 p.m. was the double-elimination episode of “Survivor: Caramoan” (6.2/10), which was on par from one year earlier, while “The Voice” (themed “The Road to the Live Show”) was fourth with a 3.9/ 6.

Last year at this time, “American Idol” beat “Survivor” in the overnights by 79 percent (11.1/18 vs. 6.2/10). Last night, “Idol’s” advantage was only 23 percent. As for “Survivor,” only two episodes remain this season, so the chain of events last night made perfect sense. But two contestants departing in one-hour was awfully rushed. And, if there is a lesson to be learned for any future contestants competing, play the idol if you have it!

In series-premiere news, ABC sitcom “Family Tools” opened with a third-place 4.1/ 7 in the overnights at 8:30 p.m., which was 15 percent below lead-in “The Middle (#3: 4.8/ 8 at 8 p.m.) and seven percent behind year-ago time period occupant “Suburgatory” (4.4/ 7 on 5/02/12 out of a 5.0/ 8 for “The Middle”). So, there was sampling but it certainly was not significant. Stay tuned for the demos.

Next on ABC was Wednesday standout “Modern Family” at a second-place 6.9/11 at 9 p.m.which built by 68 percent from “Family Tools,” followed by week five of “How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life”) at a third-place 4.4/ 7 at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, “How to Live With Your Parents” perked up to its third highest rated overnight performance, with growth from year-ago occupant “Don’t Trust the B____ in Apartment 23” (4.2/ 7 on 5/02/12) of five percent. And the retention out of “Modern Family” was 64 percent, which was better than the 57 percent for “Apartment 23” one year earlier. Five-week overnight track for “How To Live With Your Parents”: 6.0/ 9 – 5.3/ 8 – 4.2/ 7 – 3.7/ 6 – 4.4/ 7.

Capping off the night for ABC was on the fence freshman drama “Nashville” at a third place 4.0/ 7 at 10 p.m., which was 25 percent below year-ago occupant “Revenge” (5.3/ 9 on 5/02/12).

Moving back to CBS, veteran “Criminal Minds” (which is still in negotiations to return for season nine) is definitely worthy of renewal at a second-place 6.9/11 from 9-10 p.m. Next was confirmed returnee “CSI” at a dominant 6.5/11 at 10 p.m. Unlike most shows lucky enough to make it past season 10, thirteen year old “CSI” increased by five percent year-to-year.

And moving back to NBC, just renewed “Law & Order: SVU” (#4: 4.2/ 7) led into a second-place 4.1/ 7 for also confirmed returnee “Chicago Fire” at 10 p.m.

Elsewhere, bona fide hit “Arrow” on The CW (#5: 2.1/ 7) built by a whopping 250 percent from year-ago Canadian drama “The L.A. Complex” (0.6/ 1 on 5/02/12). And “Supernatural” following with a 1.3/ 2 (#5) at 9 p.m., which was 30 percent above year-ago occupant “America’s Next Top Model: British Invasion” (1.0/2 on 5/02/12).

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) we post the TV Ratings for the previous night.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)
