-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Splash” (ABC), “Hart of Dixie” (CW), “The Mindy Project” (Fox), “Golden Boy” (CBS)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led the Tuesday overnight troops, as usual, thanks to its successful pairing of “NCIS” (#1 for the evening: 11.7 rating/19 share) and spin-off “NCIS: Los Angeles” (#1: 8.5/13) from 8-10 p.m. But waiting-to-be axed “Golden Boy” dropped the ratings ball at 10 p.m. with a second-place 5.2/ 9, which was 37 percent below the 9:30 p.m. portion of “NCIS: Los Angeles” (8.3/13) and 22 percent below year-ago occupant “Unforgettable” (6.7/11 on 5/01/12). As a reminder, “Unforgettable” returns this summer for season two.

Tops in the 10 p.m. hour was ABC News Special, “Murder Mystery: Amanda Knox Speaks – A Diane Sawyer Exclusive,” which scored a 6.4/11 in the overnights. Comparably, that was up by 14 percent from year-ago occupant “Private Practice.”

Earlier in the evening on ABC was inane reality/competition “Splash,” which was anything but with a fourth-place 3.0/ 5 at 8 p.m., followed by the live “Dancing With the Stars” Results Show at a second-place 8.0/12 at 9 p.m. Comparably, “Splash” dipped by 27 percent in the overnights from the year-ago combination of sitcoms “Last Man Standing” (4.6/ 7 on 5/01/12) and “Cougar Town” (3.6/ 6), and “Dancing With the Stars” was down by 22 percent (versus a 10.3/16).

In time period premiere news, sophomore drama “Grimm” on NBC at 10 p.m. benefited out of “The Voice,” of course, with a 3.7/ 6 in the overnights. Comparably, that was 19 percent above its season to-date overnight average in the Friday 9 p.m. hour (3.1/ 5), and 23 percent above year-ago occupant “Fashion Star” (3.0/ 5 on 5/01/12). Keep in mind, though, that the retention for “Grimm” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (7.8/12) was only 47 percent.

Overall, two hours of “The Voice” scored a solid 7.7/12 from 8-10 p.m., which finished second overall in the block and will dominate among adults 18-49 (and other young adult demos).

Fox, meanwhile, was out of the competitive loop with its line-up of “Hell’s Kitchen” (#3: 3.4/ 5), “New Girl” (#4: 2.8/ 4) and “The Mindy Project” (#4: 2.0/ 3), which is not worthy of its second season renewal. Once a hot commodity, “New Girl” slipped year-to-year by 24 percent in the overnights (versus a 3.7/ 6 on 5/01/12). And The CW was barely visible care of sophomore “Hart of Dixie” (#5: 1.0/ 2), which should also be bidding adieu this season, and a repeat of “America’s Next Top Model: College Edition” (#5: 0.5/ 1).

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) we post the TV Ratings for the previous night.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)

  1. Grimm!!! The fact that it is up by 19% from its season average is a VERY good sign!

  2. Grimm didn't do bad at all but it should stick on Fridays from now on.

  3. Can't get any feeling from the overnights today! Grimm! Pulling for it!

  4. It's a shame that my two favorite shows on Tuesday nights (Hart of Dixie & The Mindy Project) are loosing the rating to The Voice and Splash. Those shows are just garbage!

  5. Marc seriously needs to stop pronouncing the demise of shows based on total viewers instead of 18-49 ratings. If advertisers pay ad rates based on the demo rather than the viewers, then who cares if FOX's sitcoms don't get 10 million viewers? Mindy might have low viewership but its demo (while not great) is just as good as a show like Body of Proof or Golden Boy.

And stop picking on Hart of Dixie. Getting 0.6s or so isn't terrible. Jesus.

  6. Agreed... HOD isn't doing so terrible (o.5 or 0.6 isn't bad for CW) same with The Mindy Project...

  7. I disagree with Mark quite often, but I agree that Mindy should have never been renewed. Its demo is lousy for FOX. It has nothing to do with total viewers, it is about the demo, and a show averaging a 1.6 in its first season is not good and does not show too much growth potential.

  8. I agree Mindy doesn't have great ratings, but I wouldn't call it unworthy of renewal either. It really should have been a bubble show. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets more buzz from awards like New Girl did, although New Girl has been down quite a bit in the ratings. My point though is that the demo matters more than the total viewership that Marc puts on a pedestal.

I disagree though about Mindy's growth potential. A lot of people find that Mindy is really inconsistent. If the quality managed to rise, which is definitely possible for such an uneven show, the ratings could grow too. That's part of what makes Mindy so frustrating: it could be the greatest comedy on television, but it isn't by a long shot.

  9. Hart of Dixie is not really losing the rating to other shows, it's losing the rating because of the lousy writing after the break-up fiasco. The sad thing is I'm speaking as a fan of HoD.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I love hart of Dixie, and usually disagree with Marc but if HoD gets yet another .4.....I'd say it's a loser.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Well done Grimm! Up almost 100% from 1.3 on Friday, if it adjusts up by two tenth it'll be a series high. Last episode to get a 2.0 was 'La Lorana(sp?)'

    ReplyDelete
  12. It's more likely to adjust down than up. Just like REV always does... Hopefully, Grimm continues to grow. Just glad that S3 is coming and that NBC's ratings are so low, so it will have a long life.

  13. I agree if it gets another 0 4,thats not good but you make it sound like its had a bunch of them when its only had one.Marc wrong, but at least HoD have the last laugh since its renewed. That must burst his bubble.

    Yeah.

  15. I wish we could see Grimm after The Voice next fall, Revolution doesn't deserve this time slot.

    ReplyDelete
  16. They're killing HoD with all this Zoe/George stuff.....

    ReplyDelete
  17. Agree. He takes ZERO consideration off other factors... IMO that makes him a terrible reviewer.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Two weeks in a row of .4 would make it worthy of being a loser this week. I know HoD has only had one. But I feel two in a row would be ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I hear ya. I have watched from the beginning, and really LOVED the first half of this season but had to stop watching when they split. Maybe if the writers had done it differently, but I felt it was too cheesy, and from what I've heard I'm not missing anything right now. I might start watching again once they figure out where they are taking the story but I'm a Zade shipper and am not really interested in watching a romance other than that one.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's like once they broke up something interesting, and in my point of view, quite entertaining to watch because of all the differences they had to figure out, they don't know what to do with their characters anymore. It's just a mess. You're definitely not missing anything, it's coming full circle again, it's basically a season 1 finale repetition.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I totally agree with you. I was such a fan last season and even though the first half of S2 had some questionable episodes, it was still a sweet and enjoyable show. But I don't understand why the people who write this show cannot let G/Z go. For me, the revival of a relationship that few people missed made the 2nd half of season 2 just so horrible. The triangle is their main problem because it is very badly done (Zoe is again obsessed, George is again Mr.Wonderful and Wade is the bad guy. Nobody looks good). Their ratings reflect who watches the show. But one can see that the show loses viewers week by week and that means only one thing: People aren't interested in the storyline.
Maybe a little more consistence and a little more creativity would help. A repetition of an old storyline that wasn't cute the first time rarely makes people excited for more.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Grimm did better, but I wish it was higher. It used to do so good.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Absolutely.

Of course they aren't, it's beating a dead horse. And the fact that Leila Gernstein herself has to almost beg Zoe/Wade fans to hang there... I got my friend watching the show and she loved it because it was fun and quirky. She wasn't even a Zoe/Wade fan but since he supposedly cheated on Zoe, she stopped watching about three episodes after, saying she doesn't even recognize the show anymore.

I don't know why the absurd need to push for the triangle to happen. It's not gonna help the fans already disappointed with the course the show is taking and it's surely not gonna help their ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I really like new Girl and wish I could see it doing better. Sadly.. I don't think even a better night could help

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love New Girl too, but it is pretty much guaranteed to last up until season 5 to hit 100 episodes. The ratings it gets by then (and how they compare with the remaining fox ratings) are what matters, not so much today's ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I say the bigger ouch goes to DWTS and to NCIS-LA. New Girl loosing two tents (or 1) if it adjusts up when facing the voice is pretty good.
