Hmm. Good episode, though not as many stand-out scenes as usual, perhaps. I opted for Twyin "reporting" to Joffrey, as Charles Dance is just so delicious as he subtly puts Joffrey in his place.
Tywin dressing down Joff! I loved how Tywin showed total disrespect for Joffrey while still being respectful! XD
I did like the bear pit scene, but I felt the escape of the bear it was too "Hollywood" for me and the ending was VERY lackluster. It needed Jaime tossing Locke into the bear pit and saying "Sorry I lied about the sapphires!" XD
Something to add some weight to scene.... something.
As soon as Tywin rolled into that throne room, you just knew how that scene was going to unfold. Charles Dance is probably the best, spot on casting for this series. I cannot re-read the books without hearing his voice and picturing him when reading Tywin.
YES! I would've loved Jaime shoving Locke in! But, then again, that might've been a bit Hollywood, too. But Hollywood I'd have ENJOYED. Locke is such an ass.
Anything that puts Joff in his place brings me joy! So that was a no brainer.
They've been handling Jaime/Brienne so amazingly in the show, and I think my problem abut the bear scene was I was going in with WAY too high expectations. So even though objectively it was good I did feel a little disappointed.
Exactly, I think maybe I fell prey to high expectations as well...
I mean if you think about it, this was the finale of the Season 3 Jaime and Brienne arc. It just did not have that epic finale feel to it. For me at least.
I think it might be that in both years so far the climax episodes build one event on the next until the final moment is mind-blowing. This episode (bear pit scene in particular) struggled partly from not having that pattern of build up.
Directly before the Jaime and Brienne bear pit scene we had a lackluster Bran scene, a fun but nothing special Jon and Ygritte scene and the disgusting Theon scene before that.
I think they expected Tywin to treat Joffrey like people treat Robb! XD
Poor Robb gets no respect except from the Blackfish. His mom betrays him (and would be executed for her actions if Robb was any other king), his wife spies on him (by all appearances), Edmure shows him no respect, and his bannermen show him blatant disrespect...
Personally I thought Tywin was pitch perfect in showing Joffrey respect while still utterly putting him in his place.
Well he wrote the original, but then some scenes were removed and other scenes were inserted. So it was not all GRRM and not paced as he would have done it.
The bear pit scene was not written by him according to Westeros.com. It was supposed to be in Episode 3.08, but was moved forward.
I'm sure there were more moves too, at least one scne removed to make room for the bear pit scene.
Theon being castrated is a pretty big character development, if not packed with storyline advancement. Whilst I agree, it all seems repetitive in theme, it is doing well in stripping away everything that Theon used to be and how he identified himself, all serving to leave him broken, physically and psychologically. I think the main problem is the fact, like Daenery's series two storyline, it had no bearing outside of that dungeon. But, I can already forsee, in coming episodes, how the threads will connect and make it more relevant, rather than seem a pointless cutaway from the presently pivital action.
I've never seen a TV character so visually fall for someone like Jaime did on the bear pit. You know he's in trouble the minute he loses his ability to quip over Brienne's "Ser Jaime". And that poor guard Brienne has doesn't even have to look at him anymore to know he's to leave the room whenever they want to speak alone.
Arya escapes! Gendry finally knows about his Dad! Robb is going to BE a Dad! This is the best episode ever!
Dance must've been too subtle in his bad-assery for these fools to realize he was being a bad-ass. I also give massive props to Jack Gleeson as well. To be in a scene with CD, hold your own AND show as many emotions as Joff did, fear/embarrassment/snottery/etc.? Bravo, Mr. Gleeson.
Wow! I had all THREE of those scenes before I began trying to make them more manageable! So hard to have only a handful of scenes for this show! All great scenes...
Actually Gleeson has said numerous times that after Game of Thrones he is done acting (at least for now) he wants to concentrate on school then college.
That´s what I love about the books. You can hate a character in book 1 but love him or her by book 5, and also the other way around. Some of them you love from the start and end up hating. Jaime is one of the characters with most development and I just love his arcs.
You're not wrong, but to me there are some characters you never really get into, even when they get a POV. *cough*Book!Cersei*cough* (cause Show!Cersei whole other story. Lena and the changed backstory have actually given her so many more layers and complexity....)
Jaime is to me easily one of the most complex, interesting, tortured and tragic characters in the whole of this world. And by book 3 IMO it's very hard to not be able to acknowledge and admit that.
Yes, you are right. There are characters I just never cared for (and some I cared for since book 1). It certainly did not help Cersei to get her own POV. I like that characters aren´t black and white in GRRM´s books. They develop....well, I guess Cersei doesn´t. :-)
Jaime is very interesting and fortunately Nikolaj C-W does a great job portraying him. Funny thing is, I hated Joffrey in the books, but I love him on the show. Great acting does a lot.
Been MIA, but just stopping by to say "Hi!" and I enjoyed the episode!
Tywin and Joffrey scene was a real delight and it was in that scene where I could kind of see the Tywin in Joffery (physically/genetically). It was the first time Joffrey was "smart" about what he should be concerned about and interesting that he didn't cross a line in irritating Grandad! -I also liked how "stairs" were used in the scene (playing to 'the climb is all there is'??)
Obviously Jaimi and Brienne's Bear scenes were also fantastic. I thought that was a nice CGI Bear! -And it almost seems Brienne parallel's Tyrion with her scars near her face!
Enough with Theon tirture! Although I see this body-part-chopping is becoming increasingly more thematic :O
I also thought Osha's lines acting were really GOOD. Her story reminds me of Dany's and Dany's visions from The House of the Undying.
I think the image of the scene was as epic as the dialogue on the book chapter. We didn't have an emotional goodbye scene between them on the books, but we didn't have Jaime's dream on the show. We didn't have Brienne pulling him up with the same might he helped her out on the books, but the bear did survive on the show.

Re: the Theon scenes. At this point, I'm really beginning to wonder what purpose they serve. "Boy" is a psycho torturer, check. We got that, like, three episodes ago. What else are they adding? If they're advancing the plot somehow, I'm missing how. So, that's it for Jaime and Brienne this season? Really? Aren't there still three episodes to come? They're absent from the last third (more or less) of the season?
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

I so, so wanted Jaime to shove Locke into the pit with the bear...

I was on another site and so many people thought that scne was bland. They missed all of Tywin's scathing sarcasm and mockery I think. Not sure how!
ReplyDeleteDid they also miss that wonderful little smile on his face as he walks away???!
ReplyDeleteGreat points about the plotting - and especially interesting considering Martin wrote this one...
ReplyDeleteI think they expected Tywin to treat Joffrey like people treat Robb! XD

Dany being a badass and of course the bearpit scene
ReplyDeleteMargaery and Sansa about Tyrion, Danny, Jamie/Brienne
ReplyDeleteYeah, you could see Joffrey shrink in his throne. Haha. Hope, there will be more scenes like that.

As always, I loved Jaime scenes! My favorite was him saving Brienne.

ReplyDeleteGleeson really is amazing - he's the character you love to hate, and that's not an easy role.
ReplyDeleteAh! That makes the plotting and the lack of punch in the bear scene more understandable. Tinkering is never good...
ReplyDeleteWow! I had all THREE of those scenes before I began trying to make them more manageable! So hard to have only a handful of scenes for this show! All great scenes...
ReplyDeleteI really hated Jaime up until this season, and Brienne did nothing for me last season - but now? Love them both!!
ReplyDeleteGleeson must have a big career infront of him. He is doing a fantastic job.
ReplyDeleteActually Gleeson has said numerous times that after Game of Thrones he is done acting (at least for now) he wants to concentrate on school then college.
ReplyDeleteHopefully he does some work during Summer hiatus!
Wauw, good for him! I sure hope he goes back to acting later on, when the right series comes to him. I´d love to see more of him.
ReplyDeleteThat's basically the process of getting to adore Jaime in the books too... so you're right on track.
ReplyDeleteThat´s what I love about the books. You can hate a character in book 1 but love him or her by book 5, and also the other way around. Some of them you love from the start and end up hating.
