- I Loved the Arya/ Hound scene. Sadly the only one. - I enjoyed Daario so far.... and I hated book-Daario! - How brilliant was the scene with Davos and Stannis? - I cannot think of a worse place to have a leech.... EEK! - Cersei is not a fan of weddings evidently. She was in full on bitch-mode!
I really enjoyed the ceremony. A lot of the book details made it into the episode in one form or another. At first glimpse during the pre-production season I was leery of The Great Sept of Baelor, but wow! It is incredible!
Glad Sam the Slayer finally made his appearance! Sad no one was there to witness it..... Pssst, Sam... Dragonglass is kinda special!
This was a good step forwards after a few faltering steps the last two weeks! I'm glad we are back on the up-swing seeing as the next two episodes should be even better. Big, big things to happen! Serious epic TV in the last 2 episodes.
Indeed! They do not need to necessarily give every character full scenes to keep them in people's minds. They can simply show them in the background time to time.
For what I;m used to the how delivering, I'll say it was a little lackluster. Not a bad episode by any means but for the GoT standards I gave it an OK. Anything revolving Tyrion and Sansa's wedding though was PURE gold.
First up, after my bit of disappointment (still compared to other series a great episode) last week, this one was so brilliantly written, directed and acted. Either the plot points last week or GRRM's writing left me underwhelmed.
But now onto this: Michelle MacLaren's shots had me riveting all the way through, that it would be a disservice to only mention a few highlights.
To the plot:
- awwww, finally things are looking good for Arya with the Hound helping her out - the introduction of the Second Sons was quick and painless and I'm fine with Daario's lust for Daenerys being a bit toned down compared to the book - Agreed, Davos and Stannis long conversation was absolute superb and they deserved it after the only quick one in the season premiere - well, as we suspected, Margaery and Cersei will NEVER IN SEVEN HELLS become Sisters. Good time for those unfamiliar with the Rains of Castamere lyrics to retell the story - really intrigued by where they move Gendry and after the leeching I still have no idea what the Dragonstonians will do with him next. BTW, when & how did Davos convince Melisandre to not go full out sacrifice on Gendry?? Hmmm 3 Leeches burned in a Fire...what repercussions that will have...heh-heh -Wedding was on-par with what I've envisioned from the book. Drunk-Tyrion on the same level as Smart-Tyrion. Sophie Turner and him really did fantastic later in their quarters. Everyone wants to see Joffrey finally dead, Tyrion's Threat was the icing on the cake. - And finally the murder of the peacefull White Walker who only wanted to say hello to the baby ;) Fantastic effects with how powerful he is and how the dragonglass affected him. YOU HAD ONE JOB SAMWELL, DON'T LEAVE THE DRAGONGLASS BEHIND YOU!!!
Best line of the week: Davos trying to read and exclaiming "F**k me!" (Jaime must have felt the same) :D
Amazing episode. Loved the wedding scenes, especially Tyrion defying Joffrey. I also think the Davos-Stannis scene was powerful. Stephen Dillane and Liam Cunningham are awesome actors.
Maybe Davos did NOT talk Mel out of that just yet. This was his proof of her god in hopes that he will come to believe and go along with her sacrificing Gendry?
Hard to say since it's all new and not in the books.....
I like that theory. Or she still has some morals and could see that Stannis would be more happy if this happened without killing the lad....ähhhhhm NOT
No matter what they do later, I think it was a brilliant way to introduce the leeches. That scene is such a stand out from the books and many people wanted it in the series. They took a different route, but they got there!
I think the biggest thing about this episode for me came about because I like the show Elementary and thought the season finale with Dormer playing Irene Adler was brilliant. Margaery's scene with Cersei's was a wonderful. It was a combat between a silken hand and a velvet fist.
As for Tyrion, Dinklage has been a very good actor and I loved him the second he slapped around Joffery in the second episode. Here, I found a greater respect for the character.
It was a dagger made of Dragonsglass. He found it last season when the Night's Watch were camped out at The Fist of the First Men.They made a point of showing it earlier in this episode though as a reminder. Sam showed it off to Gilly around the campfire.
AAAAhhhh. I remember that he found something, I just forgot what. To tell you the truth I never paid that much attention to Sam. And what was with all the birds?
I think it was a bit of a "fake out" fr the book readers...
Most of us readers (at least myself) thought when we first saw the ravens frying in one of the trailers it meant this character Coldhands was going to appear. In the books there is a character who appears at roughly this point of the story and has a flock of ravens under his control. He still may encounter Sam and Gilly in one of the next couple episodes I guess.
Just one question. As I have not read the books, I wonder, does Coldhands and his ravens have anything to do with the raven Bran is seeing, the one leading him past the wall northward?
There very well may be a connection, but not necessarily in the manner you might be thinking. Assuming you are thinking the 3-Eyed Raven is one of Coldhands' ravens....
Truth be told, Coldhands (like many of GRRM's creations) is cloaked in mystery and never 100% identified or explained in the books so far.
"You won't be a prisoner after today you will be my wife.I suppose that's a different kind of prison." I just love Tyrion! I felt so bad for him and Sansa, what a horrible situation they find themselves in.I'm really disgusted by Joffrey,he is such a bastard, I cannot wait for him to be dethroned and de-headed,i will rejoice! I will,i will!!
Not only do i feel badly for the *cough* Newlyweds,i feel downright suicidal for Loras having to marry Cersei! Ugh,i just can't imagine what that is going to be like...
Now i haven't lived a sheltered life, and it takes a lot for me to blush but Titan's Bastard almost made me blush..till i got disgusted by him... Was the language necessary, that whole segment with him and Dany meeting was a little too much and a complete turnoff for me..... anyway, Daario made up for it when he dumped their heads on the floor..
Poor Gendy,oh those leeches..OH POOR GENDY, YIKES!!! That's all i can say about that!
All in all a fabulous episode,i loved it! guess i'll start my watch,ha!!!!
She did it as a way to show Stannis she was right and Davos was wrong. That there's power in Gendry's blood. She knew Stannis was growing weary, esp. after Davos called her out in the premiere, so she did a test run.
Sansa saying she was fourteen confused me. That's how old she was when it began. Robb's mentioned he's been at war two years, so she'd be sixteen. Did she lie, hoping if Tyrion thought she were that young, he'd back off?
I thought she was 14 when it started also, but someone on a diff site said she was 13, so now almost two years later she is likely almost 15.
It has been like 2 years since the show started though... the show started in the year 298AL and is now approaching the year 300AL. I know Edmure's wedding is in 299AL, but Joff's wedding in in 300AL according to book canon.
I have no idea. I remember that in S1 she asked her mom if she and Joffrey will get married soon or if they have to wait. And in S2 or 3 she got her first period so it's possible that she was 13 or barely 14 at that time. I have no idea. I just doubt she would lie. It's really hard on shows and movies to tell, cause the actors can be up to 10 years older than their characters.
I forget who it was that was about to start reading the last two books.. As many people know the two books are split by regions and characters. So in essence you get the full story for half the characters in each book. Some fans hated this since they missed characters in each book....
I found that site I mentioned that takes the chapters from the two books, combines them into basic or rough chronological order so you can read them as one HUGE volume without missing out on any one region's characters.
I think it adds to the narrative flow of the overall story, but some of the thematic arcs might be shifted a little by doing this.
IF you want to read the two books this way you can check out the site here:
Keep your horses steady (or however the saying goes lol), unless they differ away, someday you may get the gift to rejoice over and over. :D
Really, when Loras went up to Cersei at the balcony I expected her to throw him down. Could have been a way to explain further stuff with him.
GRRM's language is, shall we say very direct. So they didn't add anything compared how the leaders of the Mercenaries come over. Sad that we didn't see their discussion and how it ended about beauty. Could have been like when Drogo got himself a Tongue from one of his buddies.
I can only say, brace yourself over the next two weeks til episode 9 comes around. That may be the most furious part of the story in all of GRRM's books and I have full confidence that it might even surpass Season 1 & 2's 9th episode.
Ha! Yes,GRRM's language is very direct! I think this is the first time it offended, shall we say my ears!
I've been waiting for Joffrey to get his since S1,and i know it will happen i'm just surprised no one has done it yet! I keep expecting someone to slit his throat while he sleeps one night.... i'm patient!
I look forward to episode 9,if its even half as good as last season then we're in for a treat and another great episode!!!!
Another great episode. Tyrion was just brilliant, I love how he talks to Sansa and I can´t help being dissappointed that she doesn´t seem to see how kind he is. (I know, she is only 14, Sansa just annoys me a bit). Joffrey got to shine as the maniac he really is. Loved it. I have said it before and will most likely say it again, Gleeson is so amazing as Joffrey. Cersei seemed more like Book-Cersei in this episode, which I enjoyed. And The Tyrells were all so much fun. Good to see Sam the Slayer, though I wish somebody had seen him, so he would earn his nickname.
Obsidian is volcanic glass, so that's why it would be effective against the cold dead Others. Uh ... whatever they call'em in the show. I can only remember the book name for'em.
In the books they are called "Others", but they changed it on the show to avoid confusion I guess. There might be one use of White Walkers in one of the five books if I recall.... I'm not even sure on that honestly.
They changed it on the show because of LOST. They didn't want to confuse people. Honest to God, I have no idea why they thought there'd be confusion with the Others from LOST.
I can see overwhelmed viewers who have not read the books being confused maybe once by the vagueness of "others" versus "The Others", but not any kind of level of confusion that warrants a name change.
The supernatural mystique of The Others is so much better than the bland White Walkers.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Sam the Slayer!

Amazing episode. Loved the wedding scenes, especially Tyrion defying Joffrey.
ReplyDeleteI also think the Davos-Stannis scene was powerful. Stephen Dillane and Liam Cunningham are awesome actors.
As long as they haven't cut the scene, we'll see Pycelle more featured with a big player in the Game of Thrones in King's Landing.
ReplyDeleteHeh, hearing that line I also chuckled. I guess Tywin might be so up and tight because he doesn't get any... lol
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Margaery would approve or disapprove of that drastic change. XD
ReplyDeleteMaybe Davos did NOT talk Mel out of that just yet. This was his proof of her god in hopes that he will come to believe and go along with her sacrificing Gendry?
ReplyDeleteHard to say since it's all new and not in the books.....

ReplyDeleteNo matter what they do later, I think it was a brilliant way to introduce the leeches. That scene is such a stand out from the books and many people wanted it in the series. They took a different route, but they got there!
ReplyDeleteI agree. The leeches served a purpose compared to the book where another Lord uses them.
ReplyDeleteI think the biggest thing about this episode for me came about because I like the show Elementary and thought the season finale with Dormer playing Irene Adler was brilliant. Margaery's scene with Cersei's was a wonderful. It was a combat between a silken hand and a velvet fist.
ReplyDeleteAs for Tyrion, Dinklage has been a very good actor and I loved him the second he slapped around Joffery in the second episode. Here, I found a greater respect for the character.
"After the battle maybe we'll share you" I'd really like to see him try. Daario is the hottest guy on the show. I hope he stays loyal to Dany. But I have my doubts about his loyalty. I mean, he killed his comrades.
ReplyDeleteSansa did look good in her dress. But I thought Joffrey and Margaery would be wed first. It doesn't surprise me that Tywin was in such a hurry. Joffrey was such a bastard. Humiliating his uncle and former fiancé in front of everybody. I knew Tyrion wouldn't sleep with Sansa. I mean, the girl is 14. In our society this would be child abuse and rape.
And if Margaery thinks Cersei is mad cause she called her sister, she should try call her mother.
I knew that Melisandre planned to kill Gendry. This today was probably just a test.
What was with all those birds at the end? And how did Samwell manage to kill the Walker? What was that thing he killed him with?
Do you know how he managed to kill that thing?
ReplyDeleteIt was a dagger made of Dragonsglass.
ReplyDeleteHe found it last season when the Night's Watch were camped out at The Fist of the First Men.They made a point of showing it earlier in this episode though as a reminder. Sam showed it off to Gilly around the campfire.

I read it was obsidian which could be dragon glass.

Yes, and I spotted Lord Varys. And he didn´t even get a scene...I was so dissappointed.
ReplyDeleteHa! Yes, the hair was an improvement. Daario seemed a little better than in the books, but I´m still not crazy about his character.
ReplyDeleteThen it better be a slow slit throat like in the Season 1 finale of The Americans. :D
ReplyDeleteObsidian is volcanic glass, so that's why it would be effective against the cold dead Others. Uh ... whatever they call'em in the show. I can only remember the book name for'em.

ReplyDeleteYes, let´s hope. I love the nickname for Sam.
