I was really surprised by the decision to not only reveal moriarty, but to catch him. I mean, I know moriarty will be back, but still... Great episode, they made it work.
Wonderful episode. Really put a great emphasis on the Sherlock/Watson relationship, gave a great spotlight on how good Watson is in her own right and why she is such a good partner for Sherlock - a partnership which I think is so vital to both Elementary and Sherlock, and both shows have done so differently and so well - and gave a fantastic villain in Natalie Dormer. I've suspected the twist for most of the show, and I've been nearly certain since they announced casting (why have a British person play an American on an American show, not to mention Dormer would make such a wonderful Moriarty, and she did) but what was pleasantly surprising was that instead of breaking Sherlock down, it strengthened his relationship with and his trust in Holmes. That being said, I hope that this is the real Moriarty, and not another smokescreen. I'm sure they could find another great actor to play Moriarty, but I already love her in the part, and I like the balance of both Watson and Moriarty being gender swapped; besides, Sherlock's nemesis also being the one woman he ever loved is just so much fun material to play with next season and beyond. I'm already looking forward season two.
I really doubt this is a smokescreen, though I think with a character like Moriarty they certainly could declare that Adler was simply the real Moriarty's second in command. But they also didn't kill her so I doubt we've seen the last of Dormer on Elementary.
I don't want it to be a smokescreen either, but I keep thinking about the guy that had Irene prisoner, he was an expert in psychological torture basically. WOuld it be possible that he "reporogrammed" Irene to believe she was Moriarty? Or is it too fantastic?
Nonetheless, Dormer made an absolutely delicious Moriarty!
For the sake of the accuracy, something which all of us who love Sherlock Holmes in his various incarnations, I have to say that the economy in this episode made no sense. One doesn't introduce Euro overnight, nor is it introduced automatically once a country becomes a member. It has to satisfy very strict conditions, which actual FYROM (Macedonia) doesn't (its actually the second poorest country in Europe). But even if it did, Denar wouldn't lose its value overnight, nor could it soar so much that billion dollars could me made off of it. You can invent that Macedonia is a rich country, or that only Greece's vote is what keeps it from EU, but I fully expect that logic of the matter be followed. You can't invent economic rules, it diminishes Moriarty's plan, just like you couldn't invent physical laws and still claim someone's brilliance depends on such an invention. If we go along with all of it, however, very good episode.
Hitting the Awesome button feels wrong as it doesn't come close to explaining how Amazing that episode was. The writers of this show are brilliant, the acting is superb and Sherlock and Watson are Mesmerizing. Now THAT was the best finale I have ever seen. Plus, the end was the most unique scene I have ever got teary eyed over. So cute.
Great finale. Dormer's American accent was good more of the time than it wasn't. Unless it was partly re-dubbed? I haven't seen her play a true villain until Elementary. I doubt that we'll never see Irene/Moriarty again.
Awesome episode. I should have known that Moriarty might be a woman since they choose to put a woman in the role of Watson. But still was a surprise for me. I only hope that we see more good episodes next season.
I don't buy Irene as Moriarty... I still believe the real Moriarty is out there. It was an excelent performance(Great chemistry, so somehow i'm now rooting for those twi to get together somehow Jajaja), but i still hope for Hugh Laurie to get on the shoes of Prof. Moriarty. I can't imagine the quality of a scene with those two.
Elementary is a far superior show than Sherlock(I'm a huge Doyle fan), Johonny Lee Miller and Elementary's writers got the character better... I didn't like the performance of the BBC one...
I really like how they made the Sherlock/Joan relationship incredible intimate, but not in a romantic way... They are so close with each other but you don't get that "Will they-won't they" vibe...
This is a fantastic show... Spectacular writing and acting... I'll be there for Season Two!
Huge twist! Love it. I wasn't even able to watch this episode yet, but now that I know this, I can't wait to see it. I bet it was an awesome 2 hours. Thank you for the opportunity to have my mind blown even without watching the actual episode, people of Spoilertv! Yay! \o/
Me neither, Irene as Moriarty has a perfect symmetry to Joan as Wastson. Plus, it's one of the things the source materila would've never done because, at the time frame of the books, literature didn't believe in smart women.
There's a lot of great television out there these days. I don't get a chance to be invested in too many of them, but Elementary is one that I absolutely adore. It's smart and well written and I love this take on Holmes and Watson.'
Thank goodness for a two hour finale!
I sorta hated Irene from the start and was almost happy that she turned out to be a villain. Even if you knew what was going to happen, it was intriguing to see how the writers crafted it. Seeing Holmes all over the place was heartbreaking for Watson as it was for me. I ship these characters not because I want to see tongue when they kiss, but because they have such mutual respect and trust in each other.
Watching three people being shot was harsh, but the "bee" was sweet and endearing.
In the books, Irene captivates Sherlock because she's the only woman on his level. Consequently, she's the only woman to beat him at his own game. I love that they combined the characters but that doesn't mean Doyle couldn't have if that was the direction he had chosen.
Watson <3 I thought she was a bit underused on the finale, but I get that Part 1 was about flashbacking to London and introducing the relationship of Sherlock and Irene, and then came Part 2 when everything really caught fire and Watson stole every scene she was on and some she wasn't even there (the hospital scene). The ending with the bees was also one of the greatest Sherlock-Watson bonding scene ever and it really says a lot about how far those two got. Loved it.
That would be a mistake... The great thing about the Sherlock/Moriarty relationship on the books is that Sherlock knows who he is, so he can go and say "I know you're a crime mastermind" and he would reply "Then prove it..."
Sherlock needs to be aware of that... And like i said, i prefer if they let Moriarty just being Moriarty(Hugh Laurie would be my pick for the role... He and Miller would be fantastic!), which can still be a posibility...
I have hope that Irene is just the right hand of Prof. James Moriarty, who teachs at Harvard University.
I'm thinking Mycroft Holmes would end up being Sherlock's father. And Elementary has depicted him as such a detached man it wouldn't suprise me if he were a loving father and warm man.
Finally got around to watching the last few episodes. Not bad. I didn't really like Adler/Moriarty being the same person, but they did a good job with it I guess. My only real gripe is the London outdoor scenes which were clearly not film in London. Why do american shows think they can recreate London but simply chucking a black cab in the shot? It makes me cringe.
Still, the ending was lovely. I love Watson and I love the chemistry between Lee and Lucy. Can't wait for season 2.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Go Watson I was so PROUD fantastic two hours
ReplyDeleteI was really surprised by the decision to not only reveal moriarty, but to catch him. I mean, I know moriarty will be back, but still... Great episode, they made it work.
ReplyDeleteYou assume that's the real Moriarty.

ReplyDeleteI was kinda hoping they wait a season before revealing Moriarty. I was kinda hoping that Moriarty would end up being Mycroft Holmes.
ReplyDeleteAnd I was hoping that it would be his dad...
ReplyDeleteI was hoping for a fight between Joan and Irene.....
ReplyDeleteI don't want it to be a smokescreen either, but I keep thinking about the guy that had Irene prisoner, he was an expert in psychological torture basically. WOuld it be possible that he "reporogrammed" Irene to believe she was Moriarty? Or is it too fantastic?

I fear the same thing, and some dangling bits would even suggest so, but darn, Dormer was awesome as Moriarty, I don't want her to be a fake one.
ReplyDeletemaybe there is two moriarty.......one female and one male.......I sure we will learn more in season 2

ReplyDeleteNatalie Doormer is amazing! The episode was more interesting than the others but it didn't completely feel like a season finale for me
ReplyDeleteGreat finale. Dormer's American accent was good more of the time than it wasn't. Unless it was partly re-dubbed? I haven't seen her play a true villain until Elementary. I doubt that we'll never see Irene/Moriarty again.

And I was hoping that they'd leave those identities alone and just have it be Professor James Moriarty.
ReplyDeleteHuge twist! Love it. I wasn't even able to watch this episode yet, but now that I know this, I can't wait to see it. I bet it was an awesome 2 hours. Thank you for the opportunity to have my mind blown even without watching the actual episode, people of Spoilertv! Yay! \o/
ReplyDeleteI dunno dude, I'm pretty excited that Moriarty is a woman, and "retconing" that away would cheapen the s1 finale in hindsight.
ReplyDeleteI mean, it's just such a fresh take, and no matter what actor they bring (Tho Laurie IS awesome) it would be a letdown.
But there are more villains than Moriarty, HL could play another role.

Brilliant episode, the reveal with Irene is actually Moriaty was great and unexpected.
ReplyDeleteBTW great performances of Jonny Lee Miller, Lucy Liu and of course Natalie Dormer.
