I didn't feel like any of these deaths were particularly unnecessary.
I suppose Fred, simply because that was random and heart-rending, but we got Ilyria out of it and Wesley had a pretty compelling arc through the rest of Season 5 engineered by her death.
I would say Lindsey because it did nothing except make me dislike Lorne. And Joyce because it did nothing for me because I really disliked her character
If the question was "most sad or heartbreaking", I would have a real struggle deciding, but I don't feel that the deaths were unnecessary. In that regard I completely agrre with everything @BoxManLocke said
Every death served a purpose and had consequences (unlike in certain other supernatural shows, *cough*tvd*cough*)
Every death was needed and every death helped to build the story and the characters who are still alive.
That said, EVERY SINGLE ONE of those deaths hurt like hell for various reasons, but they had to happen, no matter how many scars my heart got from seeing my favorites die :[
Wesley's death added symmetry to his and fred's relationship, letting them each die in each other's arms, as well as propelling Illyria's character forward.
Exactly, what kind of a dumb poll is this? There is nothing that has been done without a purpose on Buffy. And even though I hated it that Anya had to die(just because, as Joss has said, he wanted to, for the first time, kill someone off without a pay off), I've read the comics and love how Xander turned out to be without her, so no, none of those were pointless, nor unnecessary.
Probably Anya, I know they had to have some casualties but the way she was killed and the impact of her death was so brutal. She got one mention by Xander at the end.. kind of unfair.
Most of those directly influenced the main plot(s). I'd say Lindsey and Wesley. That being said, it might just be because they happened in the series finale and we didn't see the fallout.
I chose Anya I under stand they needed a death in the series final, but I felt for someone who's been there since season 3 she kinda got screwed. Xander barley missed her at least Willow went crazy and Buffy had Depression after Angel. "Thats my girl always doing stupid things".....
Anya was my fave on the show just wish she got a good death.
I'm a little surprised by the number of people voting for Tara. I know Whedon took a lot of fire for her death at the time but frankly it was the most shocking and visual death and it was the best way to advance Willow's story line. I still think the scene in the episode "Seeing Red" was one of the saddest in television history.
Doyle was sad but was needed for the development of Cordy.
Jenny was shocking but again needed because it showed just how dangerous Angelus was
Joyce was heartbreaking but still that episode dealt with grief in a way no other show has managed to top. Sad but beautifully done.
Darla well she died a couple of times and I didn't really have a problem with it, I did like it when she died giving birth to Connor,it gave her some kind of redempetion.
Wesley, really sad but he was a shell of a man after Fred had died so this was better for him.
Lindsey, meh didn't care too much for him.
Now the ones that I would like to change are Anya, Tara, Fred and Cordy. Anya that just didn't really have the impact it should have, Tara I get why they did it but I still miss her, Fred again get why but damn Fred! Cordy is probably the one I am most upset about though as I get the impression there was some behind the scenes trouble with that, I would have liked her to come back properly in S5.
Anya's death was completely brushed over and should've held more weight, considering the Scooby Gang were her friends for a long time.
Fred's death felt a little pointless, considering it was supposed to pave way for a season 6 storyline of dominance over her physical body between Fred and Illyria, which obviously didn't come to pass. Not to mention it was so close to Cordelia's death, and I personally felt like they screwed Fred over quite a bit by killing her off in a random mid season episode.
Cordy. I mean they made it work in terms of story, but it wasn't necessary IMO. Not after the S4 crap-fest that Cordy's character went through.
I would also say Fred, Wes, and Anya were also a bit redundant.... again I think they were handled well (maybe with the exception of Anya) but over all not needed.
- Fred was heartrending cause it took place during a happy time, which I get it's when you do something like that but we literally barely got an episode of her in that happy place. BUT it gave Wes's character an excellent storyline for the rest of the season, and we got Illyria. - Wes's death I think would have hit me harder if it wasn't the last episode and they weren't at war and if it wasn't so badass. One of our own had to go in a big way, and yeah it was a good "going down in blaze of glory" moment. But it was Wes so... *sadface*
- I have the same argument with Anya, but I think the impact of her death didn't really hit home with the rest of the characters, as Wes did with his crew, which is why I don't think that was handled very well.
I don't know.... after all Lindsay had done dying was a good way to end the character. Yes he was at a path of redemption and he was kinda sorta helping but I can see how it may have not been enough. Also having Lorne of all people take on that task, especially in that manner, added to that character's story.
Willow and Xander's friend from the pilot, Tara to an extent, Anya... And those are just the Buffy deaths that I can remember that felt unnecessary. Never got through Angel. Still, none of those three had any kind of emotional impact on me, and they seemed to have no big emotional impact on the characters outside of Tara to Willow (hence the "to an extent").
I really only felt that Doyle's death was unnecessary because while it did provide good tension for Cordy, I think it was too soon to have lost such a powerful character. (Also Cordy was never one of my favourites on Angel)
Haha, I wish that was the reason for it. He's just the first death in the series and therefore the first death that came to mind. Haven't seen any of Haven, but maybe I should give it a shot.
Anya. The other deaths had emotional impact and led to more story. Anya's death felt anti-climatic. I know they were trying to illustrate the losses in battle, but it just didn't touch me. I maybe it's because it didn't seem to impact the characters. It was just... eh
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteThey actually all make sense and were good for something.
ReplyDeleteFrankly none.
ReplyDeleteEvery death served a purpose and had consequences (unlike in certain other supernatural shows, *cough*tvd*cough*)

ReplyDeletedislike Lorne? Lorne was the most likeable character.
ReplyDeleteIf anything it made me dislike Angel even more than I already did, but it did showcase the theme of the show and the whole gray morality thing.

ReplyDeleteFred!

ReplyDeletePlus, thanks to his contract with Wolfram and Hart, that wasn't the end of Wesley.
ReplyDeleteMost of those directly influenced the main plot(s).

ReplyDeleteWell said.
ReplyDeleteApparently I have a lot to say about this topic.
ReplyDeleteDoyle was sad but was needed for the development of Cordy.

Cordelia's death felt like spite and is the only one i would consider unnecessary.
ReplyDeleteThere's no such thing as unnecessary death. A lot of deaths come in random circumstances and there's no logic behind them.
ReplyDeleteAnya's death was completely brushed over and should've held more weight, considering the Scooby Gang were her friends for a long time.

Totally agree.

ReplyDeleteAdmit it, you're just mentioning Xander and Willow's friend because he goes on to be Duke in Haven
ReplyDelete"You're not supposed to kill me."
ReplyDeleteI really only felt that Doyle's death was unnecessary because while it did provide good tension for Cordy, I think it was too soon to have lost such a powerful character. (Also Cordy was never one of my favourites on Angel)
ReplyDeleteHaha, I wish that was the reason for it. He's just the first death in the series and therefore the first death that came to mind. Haven't seen any of Haven, but maybe I should give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteReading with my eyes shielded. Saw all of Buffy, but haven't gone past the middle of s3 of Angel, yet.
ReplyDeleteAnya. How can you expect fans to care about her death when the characters don't?
ReplyDeleteAt least all of the other deaths served a purpose.
Anya. The other deaths had emotional impact and led to more story. Anya's death felt anti-climatic. I know they were trying to illustrate the losses in battle, but it just didn't touch me. I maybe it's because it didn't seem to impact the characters. It was just... eh
ReplyDeleteI definitely support what his death meant, but I didn't think it was necessary with Wesley's death in the same finale.
ReplyDeleteRight because Lorne had no say in it?
ReplyDeleteAfter giving Anya one of the best S7 episodes (Selfless), it was cruel to just let her die so unceremoniously.
ReplyDeleteNone.
ReplyDeleteThey all had a huge impact emotionally and for the storyline and other characters.
Noawadays killing a character is done mostly to generate buzz.
