The Americans - Episode 1.09 - Safe House - Preview

Apr 1, 2013

Previously on The Americans: Elizabeth and Phillip are having marital issues to say the least. Amador gets a little too close as Martha and Clark get even closer.

Now on The Americans: Elizabeth and Phillip are having more issues, but not with each other now. They are having difficulty telling their children about their possible split. Needless to say, neither of the children take it well. Coming from someone who’s parents have always gotten along pretty well, I can’t imagine finding out something like this. Wait till they find out they’re KGB!! Now that will be interesting!

In his other life, Phillip, or Clark rather, is busy getting it on with Martha. Clark’s wig must have been endowed with special powers or extremely sophisticated Soviet technology because it is the most resilient wig I have ever seen in my life. Not only does the “Wig of Wonder” stay on his head during his “visit” with Martha, but it also stays on during his “visit” with Amador. I’ll leave the rest of that part to Wednesday though!

The FBI meanwhile, is planning an “off-the-books mission”. This mission would be revenge for the murder of the scientist and 3 agents by the rogue German assassin, last week. Stan is hesitant to take part in this voluntary mission as it is unsanctioned by the US Government. On top of this, he can’t seem to find his old pal, Amador. The plan is to capture a Soviet operative operating in the U.S. on his morning jog. As is usual, but still exciting, things don’t go as planned.

Overall, this is an excellent episode of The Americans. The highlight of this episode is, without a doubt, the performance of Noah Emmerich as Stan Beeman. The best part of the episode, in my opinion, is the scene between a captured KGB spy and Stan where the two talk about hunting (It's a metaphor). Noah Emmerich delivers his lines perfectly. I know things like this get said a lot, but after The Americans is over (hopefully 2 decades from now) I would love to see a spinoff with Noah Emmerich. I personally think he is one of the best actors on the show and I’d love to see a prequel about his undercover work.

Rating: 9.3/10

Don’t forget to tune into The Americans on Wednesday at 10/9c on FX. Also be sure to come back here to SpoilerTV to discuss what you thought about the episode.

  5. Thanks for the review, Brandon. This episode, and the one that follows, sound really good. I can't wait to see them!

All the fantastic spy stuff aside, I find the Jennings' dysfunctional marriage both frustrating and fascinating.

I feel sorry for the kids, but I'm glad Phillip is sticking to his guns regarding the possible separation/divorce. Elizabeth had a long term on-and-off affair lasting 13 years, an affair that, according to Gregory, continued while she was pregnant with both their kids, but Phillip forgave her (quite quickly, too!). And Phillip forgave her knowing that she will likely continue to see Gregory for years to come, because he is one of her contacts. Meanwhile, Phillip has a misguided one-night stand, with a woman Elizabeth knows he will almost certainly never see again, and she refuses to forgive him. She's being completely hypocritical IMHO. I understand Elizabeth was seriously traumatized in the past, but I don't feel that excuses the shabby way she treats Phillip.

  6. Agree with you both in sympathizing with Elizabeth but also feeling she's being a hypocrite. And if the pictures we saw a week ago indicate anything, she may run back to Gregory which leaves little room to then point fingers at Philip. My theory is that Elizabeth is going to have to be separated from Philip for a bit and make up for all those choices she didn't get to make when she was 17 in order to finally value what they have.

Which doesn't make it any easier to wait for the next week!

  10. Great preview Brandon! :)

I hope it's a good as you guys are saying, because I saw Gregory in the promotional photo's and he annoys the heck out of me with his constant poking in the Philip/Elizabeth relationship.

  11. I don't remember seeing Gregory in this episode.

  12. Interesting... really? I saw on another site that he was listed for episode ten, but not nine... but then once I saw the promotional photos, I assumed it just hadn't been updated to include him. Maybe his scenes got cut?

  13. We are of one mind on that point, sir. But I fear Elizabeth is going to have to go back to him one final time before she can finally figure out it's Philip she really wants. *Sigh*

  14. Just looked at the pictures and I don't remember those scenes at all. Not sure if the screener was just a rough cut or maybe I was drunk lol

Maybe Brandon can help us out.

  15. Knowing you, probably drunk ;)

  16. lol shush :P

Just skimmed through the episode again, definitely no Gregory.

  17. ha lol. Or maybe you're still drunk ;)

  18. shut up before I ban you!

If you look at FX's press site they have removed the photos with Gregory so looks like they fcked up ;)

  19. I almost wondered when we first got the pictures if they were accidentally released for the 10th episode instead of the 9th, because we knew that one would involve Gregory and they seemed so different from the promo. Usually there's a little overlap.

Anyway, I won't argue if Gregory doesn't make an appearance :) Thanks again for the great tips on the show!

  20. Ha lol. You're right. I'll let you off ... this time ;)

  21. No worries, glad to see some fans, feels like this show doesn't get the attention it deserves.

  22. Agreed. I was surprised there hasn't been more "chatter" online about this show. It's one of the best shows I've come across in a long time. The writing and acting are stellar.

  23. Sorry I didn't see this until now. I hadn't seen the promotional photos, but yeah you guys are right. I wonder if they are for the next episode or an earlier one...

  24. No no no, I don't even want to think about that happening! :'(
