It was a clean overnight Thursday sweep for CBS care of its combination of “The Big Bang Theory” (#1 for the evening: 9.9 rating/16 share), “Two and a Half Men” (7.6/12), “Person of Interest” (8.6/13) and “Elementary” (6.7/11), which dropped by 14 percent from year-ago occupant “The Mentalist” (7.8/13 on 4/26/12). Chances are the Eye net will move “Elementary” to either Friday or Sunday to make room for a new drama that can benefit next season out of “Person of Interest.”
The live “American Idol” Results Show on Fox finished second overall from 8-9 p.m., with an 8.0/13 in the overnights. Year-to-year, that was down by 25 percent (versus a 10.6/17 on 4/26/12). Next was just renewed “Glee,” which slipped to a distant third with a 3.3/ 5 at 9 p.m. Comparably, “Glee” was 20 percent below year year-ago occupant “Touch” (4.1/ 6 on 4/26/12), which benefited out of the then stronger “Idol” lead-in support. And the retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “Idol” (8.5/14) was a mere 39 percent. That said, was it really necessary to renew fading “Glee” for two more seasons?
Over at ABC, 8 p.m. time period filler “Wife Swap” sunk to a season low 2.8/ 4, which probably means at this point the network will give it a well needed rest. Next was old faithful “Grey’s Anatomy,” which perked up to second with a 6.2/10 from 9-10 p.m. (121 percent ahead of lead-in “Wife Swap”). And compatible “Scandal,” which is poised for time period dominance among adults 18-49, scored a 5.9/10 at 10 p.m. Retention for “Scandal” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “Grey’s Anatomy” (6.3/10) was a solid 94 percent.
Elsewhere, NBC could not compete with its line-up of “Community” (#4: 2.0/ 3), a repeat of “The Office” (#4: 1.6/ 3), the regularly scheduled edition of soon-to-conclude “The Office” (#4: 2.7/ 4), “Parks and Recreation” (#4: 2.2/ 3) and recent drama entry “Hannibal,” which sunk to a series-low 1.9/ 3 at 10 p.m. Comparably, “Hannibal” was only equal to failed year-ago occupant “Awake.”
And The CW closed the night with demo friendly “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.8/ 3) and struggling “Beauty and the Beast” (#5: 1.0/ 2), which was off by nine percent from failed year-ago occupant “The Secret Circle” (1.1/ 2 on 4/26/12).
In late night, it was David Letterman’s turn to dominate the 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. daypart in the overnights, with a 2.5/ 7. Comparably, that was 14 percent below the year-ago evening. Next was Jay Leno on NBC with a 2.3/ 6 (equal to one year earlier), followed by Jimmy Kimmel on ABC at a 2.2/ 6.
Jimmy Fallon on NBC and Craig Ferguson on CBS tied for first in the 12:30-1:30 a.m. block, each with a 1.2/ 4. And “Nightline” on ABC scored a 1.3/ 4 in the 12:30 a.m. half-hour. Carson Daly on NBC capped off the night with a 0.7/ 3 at 1:30 a.m.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the
Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)
