  1. For the first time I have hope for this series. Charlie was not annoying for 2 weeks in a row. There is advancement on the mytharc. I wasn't checking the time to see how much was left. I think it is a phenomenal idea to have the Mathesons split apart on separate missions for the majority of the episode. I would say do it for longer stretches. I like that they are bringing in new characters that seem interesting and new republics will be coming in quicker than I expected. This show has gotten infinitely better with the long hiatus.

We're getting a lot of answers. To summarize what we apparently know so far: Ben Matheson, Rachel, Grace, Brad, and a few others had a startup which was working on a technology that would produce unlimited amounts of clean energy. The technology failed in its initial goals, but it instead provided a way to make electricity go out in any given location. The startup licensed this technology to the DOD under the auspices of Assistant Defense Secretary Randall Flynn, who ordered it to be used against Taliban fighters in Peshawar, Afghanistan. (Which is pretty strange to me, because how much electricity do people in a small Afghan town really use in the first place? A lot of them probably don't even have running water.) But the Tower, the large machine that's responsible for making electricity go out, went wrong for some reason, and made the power go out worldwide.

The rumors seem to be that in the next episode we're going to find out once and for all what caused the blackout. My guess is tiny nanobots that are pervading the air around the world are somehow preventing electrical devices from functioning. I think the tower was supposed to activate them in just one particular location, but accidentally activated them all over the world. That would explain why the only thing inside the pendants are flash drives: the flash drive could contain code that orders the nanobots in the immediate vicinity to stop. The main thing that makes me hesitate about my explanation, though, is that Saul Kripke said that the reason for the blackout would open the door to a much larger mystery, and I don't think the nanobots idea does that. The other obvious idea would be some kind of electromagnetic field, but I don't see how some 0's and 1's on a flash drive would counteract the field in the immediate vicinity.

Speaking of new Republics, did you notice that Randall said that the head of the California Commonwealth was President Affleck? Saul Kripke mentioned that they would do a joke where everyone would expect that the President of California was Ben Affleck, but then it would turn out it was Ben Affleck's wife Jennifer Garner.

  4. I'm starting to wonder if the electricity is actually gone. What if the technology they created is actually an anti-electrical field, instead of just a typical EMP that went out of control? There is no reason why a USB drive should be able to turn the electricity back on. Instead I think it releases some kind of signal that negates the field's effect in a given area.

If they get to that tower and disable the field, the electricity would turn back on all on it's own.

  5. Charlie is not annoying since the episode 6, so get over.

  6. Awesome episode for me, even better than the first one. Is good to know more about the Randall past, more about the reason of the blackout, new allies (I think Jimmy could be a good addiction to the cast) and every member of the family Matheson dealing with Danny's death in different ways.

  7. Charlie has annoyed me in every episode except the last two. I'm glad she has been better for you but that doesn't mean I cannot have my opinion. Perhaps you should get over the idea that yours is the only correct opinion.

  8. I laughed when I heard President Affleck. Good to know.

  9. You ppl have really low standards. :)

  10. Elizabeth Mitchell and her character are unwatchably obnoxious. First she is slapping Charlie for saying she's a bad mother, which whoops she was a TERRIBLE mother. She was selfish, couldn't think past the short-term and not at all interested in her kids. Then when they are about to die, she suddenly is incapacitated because she is sorry for being a bad mother. Great now that all your bad choices have come back to get you. Oh, mad it out of that one, why don't you hide behind your daughter some more. Great mom there. And with the power crap, if she could have destroyed the pendant why didn't she do so earlier, like when she was with Monroe and he was threatening her? When she destroyed the pendants, she took away their power the same as she took away Monroe's chance at it. This from the "let's get some of our own" lady. She is awful. I hate her constant almost crying acting and I hate her 15-faced character.

The rest of the episode had some good fights and nice moments, but the more Elizabeth Mitchell is on the screen the more I have to struggle to like this show.

  11. Agreed! Everything about this show has gotten better, even Charlie!

  12. I'm not as down on Rachel as you are, but you make several good points.

  13. Electricity has to be generated; it doesn't just lurk in the atmosphere. This has always been one of my problems with the idea here. Even assuming that power sources still exist and are being dampened, fifteen years of no maintenance would render most power plants useless--and, of course, who'd be working at those plants, since the power isn't working anyway?

  14. No my opinion is not the correct, but Charlie character grow every single episode so I make my point here.

And no you could have your opinion, but I don't have to agree with her.

Look at my comment below. I think it may be nanobots that are causing the blackout. Since there's just a USB drive in the pendant, I think it contains code which orders the nanobots in the vicinity to stop interfering with the electricity.

But what about batteries? I'm assume helicopters use batteries, just like cars do, for the workings of their electrical parts. As far as I can tell, none of the electrical devices used in the show thus far are being plugged into an outlet. There is the question of how the lighthouse turned on, but maybe the lighthouse had emergency backup power, like a battery or gas powered generator.

I think Rachel agreed to turn herself into Monroe in order to protect her family, and it's not enough to break the flash drive, you need to make sure that the code on it is absolutely irrecoverable. That was the point of all those chemicals. As far as destroying the pendants, I think she found it more important for Monroe not to get more power than for them to have power, and anyway the location of the pendants was being tracked so Monroe would probably get them sooner or later.

How is Miles dealing with it? He's essentially being just as much of a downer as he usually is. But I guess joining the rebels was motivated by Danny's death.

  19. The lighthouse is actually a good example. Even if it did have a battery or gas-powered generator, generators don't turn themselves on; someone has to throw the switch to the on position. If it was on when the power went, it might conceivably turn itself back on if the power came back, but I think that's pretty unlikely to happen without the switch being reset. For that matter, regardless of its power source, it's unlikely to still be good fifteen years later; gas goes stale, and batteries don't hold their power indefinitely. I doubt much gasoline or many batteries would be in good shape fifteen years after they were last used or manufactured. Of course, the show doesn't seem to be considering the fact that fifteen years is an extremely long time for gasoline to remain stable or for batteries to hold a charge, given that, now that we've seen running vehicles, they seem to run just fine--no stuttering, knocking, and so on. I don't think even carefully-stored gas would last fifteen years, though. Similarly with batteries. The battery that will hold its charge for 15+ years without being used is the rare battery indeed. I'd be amazed if, say, a phone battery or CD player battery would have any juice left fifteen years later, yet we've seen at least a cell phone power back up (and wasn't there a CD player in a house early on that played when the power came on?). So, unless the crypto-tech in the show somehow does not merely dampen electricity but also somehow stabilizes the fuel source or somehow inhibits its loss of charge, the whole thing is pretty implausible (such tech would also be somewhat implausible too). The implication seems to me to have been that the pendants somehow supplied power--not that that makes any more sense (especially now that we know that they're flash drives).
Let's see if we really do get any answers next week!

  20. I think Miles dealing with all this, run away from the problem (like the scene between him and Rachel when she ask to him stay and help Charlie), join the rebels and like you say he more angry than the usual.

  21. If she turned herself in to help her family, she did a pretty bad job of it when they started hunting them. And then she doesn't let them go away, she forces them to stay and fight and gets Danny killed because she gave Monroe power. If you are going to sacrifice yourself, sacrifice yourself, don't lament and whine and live an easy life only to make yourself into a liability. I don't know about your flash drives, but mine are pretty fragile. I have one that will erase itself if you don't eject it properly (stupid scandisk). The casing was what was protecting them. She doesn't need to kill the flash drives she needs to kill Randal and Monroe. And it would be easier to do that with power than without. Monroe had power again. And they are helpless. Good job lady. If you are going to stand up and fight, stand up and fight. Don't stand up, make yourself and target and then freak out and decide to run and hide.

  22. We always knew they were flash drives. The dad downloaded and pulled out the flash drive in the pilot.

  23. Very good points. She was unlikable from the beginning and like you I am finding her almost unwatchable now. Unfortunately she's so directly tied to the mytharc that you can't skip her.

  24. After this epi I am def becoming a miles/rachel shipper I think. All the little hints and looks! Gotta love it.
