  1. Managed to catch the pilot online earlier in the day... and despite the sometimes so so sfx, I really liked it. Interesting blend of characters with varying agendas and storylines... Count me in, I'll be definitely watching based on the pilot. I'm curious if anyone has played the accompanying video game and if that is decent as well.

  2. Go to youtube and look up the Angry Joe review for the game.

  4. One of the best SciFi series to premiere in a very long time IMO.

Sure it had its faults, some of the production values lacked and larage scale scenes felt small, some of the make-up jobs felt familiar to me as a Farscape fan, but I think these issues can be overlooked once the viewer accepts the world of Defiance for what it is. I had the same issue with Farscape at first, too muppet-like and too cheap feeling, but it all passed and the series grew on me.

The creators have done a lot of world-building and backstory for the series and it shows. The main plots are laid out, but with the level of detail exhibited they can go in a number of directions for a long time. Long term potential is a good thing for a new SciFi series!

Much like Farscape, Defiance feels both intimate and epic. The characters are fleshed out nicely without feeling too one-note. Some of the VFX were not quite up to snuff, but it was passable for a TV series. Iwould give it a solid "B" and think it has potential. More potential than any SciFi series I have seen in a long while.

  5. The CG was....not great but I've seen so much worse so it doesn't factor into my enjoyment. Irisa is cute in that alien kind of way, and she's got attitude. I like that. Jaime Murray was gorgeous as walways. I'm pretty sure you could paint her yellow with black spots and she'd still be hot. As for the show itself it has a lot of promise. But mark my words, Syfy will screw it up. They always do.

  6. Watching it right now, not nearly as bad as some people have said elsewhere, I'll stick with it if I can, SyFy series in particular seem to really get more enjoyable as they get to their second season and so far what I've seen isn't bad at all.

  7. Well your reaction is exactly what I wanted to say! You probably know this show is from the creator of Farscape (Rockne S. O'Bannon)? I'm guessing so seeing all the Farscape references! xD

  8. Well that was great, much better than expected! And them expectations were high! Very Farscape like, which is logical considering it's from the same creator Rockne S. O'Bannon. Though IMDB is a bit murky on that.

I'm looking forward to seeing where the rest of the episode goes. I would have commented some more but @DqMSpTV:disqus knocked it out of the ballpark with his comment, so go read that one as well! :)

  9. Yep, I do. :)

It was fairly hard to avoid the similarities at times IMO. There was just enough change to avoid it being disconcerting to me, but there are a lot of similarities!
    - The Castithan have similarties to Chiana who was Nebari. Pale skin and hair, sunken eyes and cheeks.
    - The Indogene are bald and textured like Zhaan who was Delvian.
    - Irisa the Irathient has similar coloring and look to Sikozu (I forget her race).
    - Of course our hero is a human outsider, much like Crichton was.

Definitely some similarities, but they did tweak it enough... For me at least.

  10. Agreed! Though most of the similarities of the races end at their appearances, unless the Indogene are revealed to be plants as well, etc. ;)

Sikozu (Svala Shanti Sugaysi Shanu) was a Kalish if I remember correctly. The fact that I know the name completely probably says I have watched Farscape to many times! xD

I'm curious were they'll go from here. I'm a bit scared because it is on SyFy a place were sci-fi shows don't tend to last. How contradictory is that?

And I still don't agree they air these shows on Mondays, whereas they used to thrive on Fridays!

  11. HA! XD
    It just might say that....
It's a fun show though so no shame in admitting it!
I got the DVD's last Xmas and plan a re-watch over the Summer ...

I lost faith in SciFi when they changed their name to SyFy frankly. It became the redneck cousin of the original network with more "unscripted reality" shows than original Science Fiction programming.

I'm not sure how much of a difference the air date means to me personally. I DVR everything and watch it later. Very few shows get watched the same day. I guess for ratings purposes Monday may be a better numbers day than Friday? If that is the case then maybe them placing it on Monday is a good thing, but it does feel odd....

Defiance premiere was some of the BEST stuff syfy has ever done since Caprica. That's pretty much all I can say, apart from the fact that it has a very clear farscape vibe.

  16. I really liked the pilot. It is a sort of SciFi-"Deadwood" . Very promising - I will keep watching for now!

  17. Oh I forgot to mention, or ask, was that leader of the Spirit Riders was Adam Baldwin right?

I kept waiting for him to say some recognizable line from Firefly as a clue, but it did not happen! XD

  18. If you do, I would love to know what you think of it now! :)

And totally agreed on the SciFi/SyFy change. I'm still bitter with several Stargate shows getting cancelled because their airtime was given away too wrestling and they subsequently died on Monday nights.

Speaking of Monday nights, seems my fears were unjustified (for now)! Defiance actually did pretty well on Monday night! :)

  19. Even though it is basically a million Sci-Fi shows rolled into one with a million tropes and clichés I've seen many times before I did find myself enjoying it quite a lot and will be coming back for more.

    Things I loved/liked

+ I have a thing for scheming power couples so I love the Tarrs

+ The Doctor is sarcastic and fun

+ I didn't see that twist at the end coming, ooo devious former mayor.

+ Unlike a certain other sci-fi show set in the future Revolution, I didn't outright hate any of the characters! A good sign

+ The music! Bear McCeary is a god in my eyes.

    Things I'm uncertain about

+ It was a little predictable really I hope we get more twists and turns

+ I really really hope they don't go down the love triangle route with the Mayor her sister and Nolan

  20. It was pretty bad. The story is focusing on too many things and of course it's PG-friendly. The characters are mostly bland and only the main duo is interesting. The CGI was very uneven - the intro was great but some scenes later on looked like they were taken from a video game.

  21. I personally found myself enjoying this show. I feel people take notice on how it reminds them of another show, or is a blend of other sci-fi shows, but I honestly don't care whether it is or not. It's hard to find original scripts or productions these days, so I never look to see how one show is like another.

    I liked:

~ The dance scenes, the languages, the music, the costumes, and even the food and drinks, basically anything cultural about the show, I really loved and got into.
~ Am I the only one that liked the Spirit Riders? The entire episode I was hoping they would make another appearance..and I wasn't disappointed. Hopefully, we will see more of them.
~ Some say the CGI was sketchy, I completely disagree. Once they start making aliens look like the dinosaurs off of Terra Nova, then I will have a problem.
~ Nolan and Irisa had some really good scenes. I really enjoyed their relationship and how it is a little original in its own way.
~ I definitely enjoyed Irisa, she's got major attitude, and I can tell she's only in Defiance for Nolan. I also liked her scenes with the deputy guy.
~ Stahma + Datak = watch your back because they be scheming
~ The Indogene Doctor is sarcastic, I enjoyed her humor and directness.
~ Believe it or not I actually like the old crazy mayor, although hopefully the smoking and drinking will kill her before she can unleash her evil "plan"
~ I liked all the characters, except for the little McCawley's storyline..it was a little boring/cliche to me. However, I did like the cute little dance scene between "Romeo & Juliet".

    Things I really didn't like:

~ I thought it was a little too predictable, the Ben thing…and even the Mayor thing, I wasn't really surprised. But that's ok for me…I like guessing things right as the episode goes onXD
~ I also don't wanna see Nolan getting stuck between Amanda and Kenya…I'm so sick of love triangles and it's hard to find a show that doesn't have one…if it's too hard to choose then choose neither.

  22. The Doctor was one of my favorite characters too. I also liked Hapless Law Guy since he made me laugh too. Madame Tarr reminded me a lot of Mrs. Neville from Revolution and that is a big compliment from me. They both have the Lady Macbeth vibe going. Agreed about how the characters are an improvement from Revolution as a whole.

I was not shocked at the mayor being behind it. I was however shocked at how very much alike it was to Borealis, with the exception of alien species of course. Kind of Borealis meets Alien Nation to me. By the way, I am 100% with you about the love triangle. None of those please.

  23. I liked the pilot. I hope that next episodes will be that great as well.

  24. It shows Sci Fi Westerns can work. It is a lot like Firefly without the ship.
