^ Both of these remind me that Moffat described this episode as surprisingly romantic. Between the witch they speak of and this 'crooked man'?

^ Almost seems like something Clara would say to the Doctor as she tries to get her head around the nature of who he is.

^ TARDIS still doesn't like Clara! Which can surely only mean that that the old girl is reacting badly to whatever odd time things are happening with Clara (but surely the Doctor should expect that?) or she's sensing Clara is an unwitting trap?
I've enjoyed the first 3 episodes of this part of the season, but I have to say that this one and the next (Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS) are my kind of Doctor Who episode. Even though this episode is pretty romantic it's done in a way that didn't grate on me, there's no way I'm a shipper of any sort and normally I dislike 'love stories' but this one does work with the overall plot, even though there is a slightly sugary scene or two.
ReplyDeleteBut overall, this episode is scary...I would have been hiding behind the sofa as a child watching this one, which is the kind of Who episode I love! It's set in the 70's, but it also has a very classic 70's Doctor feel to it much like last weeks had a 60's Who feel to it imo. It doesn't feel like it's the same writer of Rings of Akhaten, not by a country mile. He wrote this one first, and on the strength of it was brought in to do Rings quickly afaik, and I can see why, it's far nearer what I expected from the creator of Luther!
Yeah, it definitely has some pretty romantic moments in it, but as I mention in my comment above it doesn't feel like a 'shipper' episode. I think the love story is fairly balanced out with the scares, TARDIS timey wimey, and some lovely character moments with Clara both with the guest stars and the Doctor.
ReplyDeleteRomantic between the Doctor and Clara? I'm honestly surprised if so! From what you've said though it sounds like they get the balance right if that's the case. I don't mind the shipping stuff at all but honestly prefer it if it stays subtle and balanced with other aspects. Give people more freedom to take from their relationship what they want rather than shove it in their faces. Keeps everyone happy!
ReplyDeleteThis year feels much better than 2012. S7 P1 had great Episodes, but it was a far more 'hit n' miss' affair. But this Series has consistently impressed me, and I'm so glad to hear next Episode won't disappoint.
ReplyDeleteI genuinely like a bit of romance in Doctor Who. It is very divisive, but in Who I'm not a huge traditionalist and I really enjoy anything that creates an element of controversy. ;)
'The Rings Of Akhaten' was probably my cup of tea. I loved the 'awesome' alien planet, the religious subtext, the beautiful Murray Gold compositions and the sense of madness and adventure the Episode gave. It had many elements I simply adored, even if Cross didn't entirely fit them all together quite well enough. But it was an Episode I will often go back to.
Did you also enjoy 'Journey To The Centre Of The Tardis'..? I know it's too early to say anything, but your opinion is great. :D
No, no romance between 11 and Clara, thankfully lol. I guess shippers might see something there if they want to but I really don't I'm afraid.
ReplyDeleteI just wish Rings had time to have gone through another draft or two, it was a great story but the pacing didn't quite come together for me. I did enjoy it though, and like yourself it will be one I go back to :)
ReplyDeleteJttCotT was brilliant imo, though I do think it will have elements some may dislike mainly due to canon with the history of the show and/or being a similar themes to Hide...i.e being a scary one. It was brilliant to see more of the inside of the TARDIS, and has been a long time coming in the new series. She can be a very willful and stubborn machine, but also amazing and it's great to see some of the rooms her corridors hold.
I think the shippers are perfectly happy as long as they get nice scenes between the two where they can see something there if they want - rather like they got in Cold War. They don't ask for much :D

I think Clara and 11 do seem to flirt a little, but for me a bit of flirting doesn't necessarily mean that a romantic relationship is on the table (either on the show or in real life). I think that Clara is someone who fascinates the Doctor due to his past encounters with her, and for her he is this bombastic man who has finally given her a chance to journey in a way she never dreamed of. There's nothing wrong with reading their relationship in any way the viewer wants to at the end of the day, art is (and should be) something that is subjective and personal imo :D

ReplyDeleteFlirting, obviously caring about each other, all good...If people want to believe that deeper feelings could develop between them then they can, if they just want to see it as a sometimes flirty friendship they can. Win win situation. We don't want another obnoxious Rose scenario developing after all :p Also I think this differentiates his relationship with Clara with that from Amy. With Amy things became very sibling like, and having the flirty banter here gives a nice different vibe. Anyway, looking forward to this ep and (hopefully!) finding a bit more about Clara.

I wouldn't say that she's particularly powerful as such, though she is involved in a powerful connection that is important to the story. She's very timey wimey, scary and scared, and teaser 3 above is the way to crack the problem of who/what she is.

ReplyDelete'Journey To The Centre Of The Tardis' still remains my most anticipated Episode of the Series. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it. There is something that truly appeals to my nerdy heart about seeing more rooms of the Tardis.

I think different teasers on the net appeal to different types of fans, and imo following up on questions posed in comments and connecting with like minded people make my job more enjoyable, and makes it easier to come up with the kind of teasers that are wanted, if that makes sense, lol.

ReplyDeleteSounds like my kind of episode as well. I love the truly scary stuff, and I'm quite pleased to hear that Cross didn't make the same mistakes in this one that he did in "Akhaten". Particularly since I've really been looking forward to "Hide" ever since we started seeing clips of it, and Akhaten made me wonder if it was actually going to be that good after all.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm not too frantic about canon, and if the scary elements in Hide are as good as you say, I'm sure I won't mind them being echoed the following week. I'm very happy to hear that you enjoyed it. Ever since Steve Thompson was announced as the writer of that episode, I've been worried that he might do another "Curse of the Black Spot" with the concept.

ReplyDeleteI think the only mistake that Cross does make is that, like Rings, the ending is a little weak again imo. There's an unnecessary twist in the tale (which is related to teaser 10 on my list) that I prefer to gloss over and pretend that the episode ends a few minutes before it does, lol.
ReplyDeleteAh, I see. That, I think, is a problem with these "one-shot" stories - not enough time to develop big ideas and bring them to a satisfying conclusion. I hope two-parters make a return in Series 8.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I can't argue with that, it's hard to wrap some stories up satisfactorily and therefore some parts are just too rushed or finished off too quickly just to tie ends up as quickly as possible. I understand there's no two parters this season because of the complex story that was told in the previous two years, and the change/experiment has worked on the whole, but I'm dying to get back to a mix next season!
