I started to go with Sam getting stabbed by Jake, but the one that made me gasp was Sam getting shot in Dark Side of the Moon. That was a total shock, then of course I saw Dean getting shot coming, so no surprise. DSotM is one of my top favorite ep, love everything about it.
Tossing up between Dean and the hellhound and Sam's cage ending. Dean's death was emotional and a very good cliffhanger, but I voted for Sam. It was just as amazing :)
The first time Dean died in mystery spot for me because it wasn't malicious or planned or even dragged out and the owner of the place where the boys broke in seemed as cut up and shocked as Sam was.
Dean's death wasn't that heartbreaking because you knew he was gonna come back next season. I mean with when Sam died the first time, you really saw how broken Dean was for failing his little brother. I picked John's death, btw
I had a difficult time.. I judge the heartbreaking by how the other brother responded. Due to that, Dean's hell hound death has to go to number 3 for me. It's between Dean's actions in the Sam deaths. It was difficult to choose. His talk to Sam's body and selling his soul was heart rendering, but his being there for Sam to see him through, his taking that horrible, murderous beating and just saying over and over I am here for you, Sammy...You're not alone....tore me up. I'm crying just thinking about it. so Sam's death going into the cage was the most heartbreaking.
Vote for Sam's death on episode 2x21... What a great Season. The Show's best years were Season 1 & 2, when they were two brothers traveling by the United States listening good Rock(I still remember 1x21 with Carry On My Wayward Son and 1x22 with Fight The Good Fight and the ending of 2x22 with Boston's Don't Look Back... How to forget Styx's Renegade from episode 2x11)searching for the Demon that killed their mother...
What a great show... After watching Season 6 and almost all of Season 7, i really miss the old show... It's better when things end sooner but awesome... SN should have ended on Season 5.
A friend of mine still watch the show and said to me that Season 8 improved a bit(They now have something to do... Season 6 had really bad writing with the Eve arc that ended on a bad way. The characters also stoped growing, and they are playing with the same old scenarios again and again...
Season 6 should have been Dean and Sam going after God, but they rather did pointless plotlines...
It's just my opinion, since i was a huge fan(of Season 1-5, the ones i have on DVD)... Don't hunt me, i know the SN fandom is very protective of the show... I am one of those, just a Kripke era fan :P
Sam's death in All Hell Breaks Loose 1 and then Dean's companion monologue over his dead body in All Hell Breaks Loose 2 was one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever seen on TV. That speech still resonates with me even though I have seen that episode more than 100 times.
Yeah, at the end of that scene, Dean was broken both mentally and physically and I don't think I have ever been able to watch it all the way thru. Hard to see through all the tears.
I saw as a cliff hanger it made it more heartbreaking. You were left with that impact of the previous 2 seasons of Dean's self-destructive behavior coming back to bite him and the wait to see the resolution.
But that lapse in time didn't let us react to the death with Sam, I'm not saying it wasn't heartbreaking just didn't have the impact of some of the other deaths
Sam's death in All Hell Breaks Loose. X The scene was positively heart-breaking, enhanced by the spooky ghost town, the complete unexpectedness of Jake pulling a knife at the last minute, the mud onto which the brothers fell to their knees, the way Sam's head just lolls onto Dean's shoulder, the terrible awareness in Dean's eyes that his brother has drawn his last breath, his obvious distress.
Just so so moving, no matter how many times you watch it!
I actually went against the grain on this one. My first instinct was to choose the hellhounds - it's like a punch to the gut every time, and it was the culmination of Dean's willingness to do absolutely anything for his brother... but I ultimately voted for Samifer snapping Future!Dean's neck. It's not that I was invested in the character per se, but there was something so incredibly haunting about Dean meeting his death staring down a demon with his brother's face.
Saddest had to be when Dean was ripped apart bye the hell hound but don't you think they should do and episode where the boys go after Roy and get him back for killing them Dean said he would be pissed.
The time lapse is why I didn't vote for it too. With Sam's death we got the immediate gut-wrenching reaction of Dean so painfully played out. With Dean's death we only got a few seconds before the scene cut to Dean on the rack and then when we came back it was months later so we missed seeing how Sam reacted the next day, week, month.
The reaction is what make a death for me too. It's not how the person died that pulls at my emotions but how those left behind react to it. So many times the death itself is the cliffhanger followed by a time jump and so we miss seeing the direct fallout of that death. By giving us Dean's monologue, we were actually in his pain and not just hearing about it as an afterthought, which made the death that more gut wrenching.
Bobby's death--I haven't got over it yet! In fact I'm so upset about it I've downgraded SUPERNATURAL to second place---my favorite show is now GRIMM. If they didn't want to use Bobby in the show a lot he could have "gone off" like they did with Castiel---but to kill him just ripped out my heart!
Sam's first death was the most heartbreaking for me, followed by Dean's by the hellhounds, and my number three would be Henry. Number four John's. Sam's death in AHBL part 1 was so intense and Jensen's acting in the following episode, that made me cry. Jensen himself cried for real during that scene. If we would count Bobby as a Winchester, (at heart, Bobby is Sam and Dean's father. Don't get me wrong, John loved his children very much, but Bobby has a very special place in Sam and Dean's lives, that of the father who took care of them, and I love him so much for that) then Sam's death in that episode and Bobby's death would be tied for me. Both very heart-breaking.
Definitely Sam getting stabbed by Jake. That scene was pretty devastating to see.
Dean getting ripped up by Hellhounds was necessarily heartbreaking, but what followed, with him chained up in that waiting room type area yelling out to Sam was.
Oh!!My poll :) Sorry if any of you got upset I didn't put Bobby's death in the choices but I just wanted to ask about the Winchester bloodline.Of course Bobby deserves to be called a Winchester (as Dean said is his suicide letter)!!For me the most heartbreaking death was Sam's self-sacrifice when he jumped in the pit with Lucifer and Michael. When he got hold of Lucifer and told Dean "It's ok,Dean. It's gonna be ok.I got him" I cried my eyes out :'( And then when he took his last breath...Damn :'( I am so SO happy that the show didn't end in season 5.I would never forgive Kripke for leaving Dean all alone and having Sam suffering for all eternity in Hell. It's not only sad but unfair. After all the things the brothers did for humanity they deserve so much more.Even if they do die at the end of they series, both of them,I won't accept anything else but them in Heaven. They have earned the right to be at peace.
Sam's death in Season 2. I think a lot of it was Dean's reaction that tore my heart out.
Dean's death on Wednesday in Mystery Spot was really sad too. I actually had tears. I really felt bad for Sam there.
The others were either too fast or too shocking or bloody to really get to me emotionally. I was more stunned when Dean died in Season 3 than hit in the heart.
Plus, episodes like Dark Side of the Moon, knowing they'll live sucks out the emotion. I'm like "Oh well, Dean and Sam are dead again, but they'll come back." :D lol
John's death was sad, but it was more the aftermath, like when Sam and Dean were watching his body burn in 2x02 ELAC and then when they said their silent goodbyes to John when he was a ghost free from Hell in 2x22 AHBL2.
I guess Adam's easily forgotten even by the writers. :( I liked Adam, and don't understand all the hate. He was in the dark about a lot of things so I could understand why he ended up believing the angels.
I didn't find his death heartbreaking though, as the first was off-screen and the second was in a scene more focused on Sam and Dean.
I agree it's not the same without Bobby. Even though quality wise the show has been slipping and I find myself enjoying other episodes of other shows more I still consider it my favorite. I think it's because I am really attached to Dean, Sam, and Cas still.
Can't we just not like a character without calling it hate?? I understand why they needed Adam, would not have been good to have Sam & Dean fighting as Michael & Luci, they needed that other brother, but I did not want to see him riding with them on hunts.
Death wasn't heartbreaking with Adam, but I thought *damn* I hope the writers bring him up again in some way, but he ain't gonna be happy. Maybe in season...
What about Mary and Adam!? Granted Mary died in the pilot, but every time we saw her in flashbacks, especially when Sam met her ... it becomes more and more heartbreaking!
Sam's death in "All Hell Breaks loos" :'( it's the scene that hooked me to this show. it was something special cause of the fear in Dean's eyes of losing Sami in s1&2 come true! it was on of top of the best scenes in the show>
Sam's death at the end of season two. Even though I knew he was gonna die at some point I was still shocked and heartbroken. Just so sudden and deans reaction was so emotional. Next is deans death at the end of season three. It was the first season I saw so I was not expecting them to actually kill him off. I was so surprised and very emotional. Funny reading down this list seeing how many times each of them have died. I don't think any other show has anything like this
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteDefinately Sam from season 2. One of the best Supernatural finales.
ReplyDeleteTossing up between Dean and the hellhound and Sam's cage ending. Dean's death was emotional and a very good cliffhanger, but I voted for Sam. It was just as amazing :)
ReplyDeleteYou totally forgot about Bobby!
ReplyDeleteI cried so hard when Bobby died, not because he died, but the emotions that came from Sam and Dean were heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteThe first time Dean died in mystery spot for me because it wasn't malicious or planned or even dragged out and the owner of the place where the boys broke in seemed as cut up and shocked as Sam was.
ReplyDeleteSam's death on the season 2. Probably one of the most heartbreaking scene on the show.. EVER!
ReplyDeleteDean's death wasn't that heartbreaking because you knew he was gonna come back next season. I mean with when Sam died the first time, you really saw how broken Dean was for failing his little brother. I picked John's death, btw
ReplyDeleteWhen he died or when he crossed over?
ReplyDeleteThey really do get killed a lot.
ReplyDeleteIf you want to use that first argument you could say the same about any time Sam or Dean die.
ReplyDeletethe hellhonds... the goodbyes, the trying to find a way to save him, Sam watching Dean being ripped apart... the hellhounds one...
ReplyDeleteI had a difficult time.. I judge the heartbreaking by how the other brother responded. Due to that, Dean's hell hound death has to go to number 3 for me. ReplyDeleteUm, BOBBY'S death???????????????????????

ReplyDeleteI don't want to start an argument, I'm just saying Dean's death in the third season was more for the cliffhanger
ReplyDeleteExactly! That's what it had over Dean's death in season 3, time for us to mourn along with Sam
ReplyDeleteYeah, at the end of that scene, Dean was broken both mentally and physically and I don't think I have ever been able to watch it all the way thru. Hard to see through all the tears.

ReplyDeleteAlso Bobby was not a Winchester.
ReplyDeleteHe's not a Winchester, even if he was a father figure. That definitely was a heart-wrencher though
ReplyDeleteSam's death in All Hell Breaks Loose.
ReplyDeleteX
The scene was positively heart-breaking, enhanced by the spooky ghost town, the complete unexpectedness of Jake pulling a knife at the last minute, the mud onto which the brothers fell to their knees, the way Sam's head just lolls onto Dean's shoulder, the terrible awareness in Dean's eyes that his brother has drawn his last breath, his obvious distress.
Just so so moving, no matter how many times you watch it!
The first time Sam died, definitely.
ReplyDeleteI can't get over how funny this poll looks. With all the multiple deaths of Sam and Dean.
And I guess Adam doesn't count as a Winchester?
Sam's death because of Dean's absolutely heartbreaking reaction.
ReplyDeleteI actually went against the grain on this one. My first instinct was to choose the hellhounds - it's like a punch to the gut every time, and it was the culmination of Dean's willingness to do absolutely anything for his brother... but I ultimately voted for Samifer snapping Future!Dean's neck. ReplyDeleteSam's death of course. It was just heartbreaking and unexpected. However, we knew that Dean would die in season 3, so it wasn't that 'shoking' as Sam.
ReplyDeleteSam's first death was the most heartbreaking for me, followed by Dean's by the hellhounds, and my number three would be Henry. Number four John's. ReplyDeleteWhat about all the times Dean dies in 3.11 - Mystery Spot! They're all my favourites!!!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Sam getting stabbed by Jake. That scene was pretty devastating to see.

Same for me. Often times its the reactions of other people that get me.
ReplyDeleteThough I do sometimes get emotional over the death of a character I really loved just because they died.
The only ones there that got me was the first death and the Wednesday death. The montage was kinda humorous. Very twisted episode. lol
ReplyDeleteSam's Death in All Hell Breaks Loose was really gut-wrenching, Jensen performed the hell out of that scene.
ReplyDeleteI guess Adam's easily forgotten even by the writers. :( I liked Adam, and don't understand all the hate. He was in the dark about a lot of things so I could understand why he ended up believing the angels.

ReplyDeleteJohn's death, as his is the only death that sticks. All other deaths became meaningless with the constant resurrections.
ReplyDeleteCan't we just not like a character without calling it hate?? I understand why they needed Adam, would not have been good to have Sam & Dean fighting as Michael & Luci, they needed that other brother, but I did not want to see him riding with them on hunts.

What about Mary and Adam!? Granted Mary died in the pilot, but every time we saw her in flashbacks, especially when Sam met her ... it becomes more and more heartbreaking!
ReplyDeleteNo Mary Winchester? The one that started it all?
ReplyDeleteSam's death in "All Hell Breaks loos" :'(
ReplyDeleteit's the scene that hooked me to this show.
it was something special cause of the fear in Dean's eyes of losing Sami in s1&2 come true!
it was on of top of the best scenes in the show>
Dean's Death in No Rest for the Wicked
ReplyDeleteSam's death at the end of season two. Even though I knew he was gonna die at some point I was still shocked and heartbroken. Just so sudden and deans reaction was so emotional.
ReplyDeleteNext is deans death at the end of season three. It was the first season I saw so I was not expecting them to actually kill him off. I was so surprised and very emotional.
Funny reading down this list seeing how many times each of them have died. I don't think any other show has anything like this
Sam's death in Season 2 b/c it was completely unexpected!
ReplyDelete
