On one hand, ABC currently has Revenge and OUAT and also aired Legend of The Seeker. On other hand, ABC cancelled LOTS and CBS has The Mentalist, as well as the most perfect show ever Person of Interest.
this is very very tough. overall i think it's a tussle between usa network (monk, psych, suits, necessary roughness, royal pains, white collar, common law, fairly legal) and possibly nbc (chuck, parenthood, smash, revolution, go on). i think my watching tv schedule is on a variety of networks. I do also watch shows on tnt (perception, rizzoli and isles), abc (once upon a time, castle, nashville, rookie blue), cbs (the mentalist, person of interest, elementary, unforgettable), fox (touch, the following, terra nova, tru calling) as well as international shows like being erica (cbc), packed to the rafters (channel 7), continuum (showcase) and sherlock (bbc). cw is also ok with arrow, hart of dixie and beauty and the beast, and if i was watching both veronica mars and one tree hill when they were on on cw, i probably would've said that cw would be my favourite channel... all in all, i think i have a well-rounded tv watching schedule in terms of channels i like... however, i shall say that in a general sense, cable is better than network. most network new shows are either really good (like arrow, the following, elementary and revolution) or really bad (zero hour, do no harm, cult etc.) rarely these days it's never in the middle. maybe it's because right now new shows coming up are being compared so much to older shows that have inspired them. chuck, lost, 24, one tree hill, smallville and friday night lights have all ended within the last few years and i think it's pretty hard to see new shows yet still be attached somewhat to older ones. hopefully nbc finds a stable show at thursdays at 10pm and abc finds two shows (sundays 10pm and thursdays at 8pm) that will be for the long term...
Pretty tough choice. I've loved shows that have been on different networks: Community - NBC, Lost - ABC, Fringe/24 - Fox, Person of Interest - CBS, Game of Thrones - HBO, Dexter - Showtime. USA typically has a fair amount of winners: Burn Notice, Psych, Monk to name a few.
But I had to go with AMC, Breaking Bad is one of the best as is The Walking Dead. Not too keen on Mad Men, haven't seen Hell on Wheels but have heard good things. AMC won because Breaking Bad and TWD occupy 2 of my Top 5 favorite shows currently on TV.
Exactly the same. You actually listed all the same shows in all the networks as I would've with the addition of Entourage for HBO, Southland for TNT, Suits for USA and Archer, Justified and The Shield for FX.
It was a tough pick but I, too went with AMC for BrBa and TWD with addition of having great respect for Mad Men and Hell on Wheels
I'll go with HBO, even when some of my favorite shows are on FOX and ABC (including my very all time favorites Fringe, Revenge and Pushing Daisies) because HBO never lets me down, I've seen no pilot there that doesn't kick ass; even if they are not my favorite series the quality of their shows is great, they have very high standars, while network television doesn't look up that much for standars as for rating, and even though FOX had Fringe and ABC has Revenge (and had Pushing Daisies) they also have shows that just can't keep up with HBO
really? ABC didn't cancel LOST, they let the show end on it's own, they told the creators in the 3rd season that they wanted it to be a 6 season show and they were fine with it.
Yes, I was thinking about FX at the time (I considered giving it an honourable for the genius of Justified alone) so my brain made me put FX. Sorry about that. Fixed!
FX is not as consistent, but they make more series including comedies etc.. AMC has the highest overall standard of any network IMO.
HBO would be #2 for me.. It makes (or maybe MADE) more brilliant series than any other network around, but many of them tend to be niche shows that do not have a wide spectrum demographic appeal..
Showtime is very hit and miss overall....
I'm not sure any of the big4+CW make enough quality shows to even be included honestly....
I have voted for ABC, on a basis of quantity essentially. Out of the broadcasts, it is the one with the most shows that I love: Lost (always!), Revenge, Scandal, Once Upon a Time, Grey's Anatomy, just to name a few. There are individual shows I love on the others, but they are usually less and typically when I like an ABC drama, I really adore it. I suppose a case could be made for cables, like Showtime (Homeland and Dexter is a killing combination) but ABC still has the upper hand in the ratio of quality and quantity.
Totally agree. Although ABC sometimes kills it with their messy schedule, I mean, they put OUAT and Revenge against Grammy and then they put them on 2-weeks hiatus? I mean, quite dumba** decision tbh. Most series I've been watching (watched) are/were on ABC: Revenge (♥), OUAT (♥), Suburgatory, Modern Family (♥), DTTBIA23, Body of Proof, Cougar Town (♥), Better of Ted, V (♥ and still hate them for cancelling it), Brothers & Sisters, Pushing Daisies (awesome series, I think w/ more seasons it could be a cult TV show :-) ), Desperate Housewives (this is cult TV show tbh)....
1 - FX : Starting with a show like The Shield, you could tell FX was full of promises. And 11 years later, it is still the best place for gritty dramas and original comedies. The fact that Sons of Anarchy got a 14th episode in season 4 and five 60-minute episodes (commercials excluded) in season 5 because Kurt Sutter wanted to says a lot about how they treat their shows. The Americans isn't a hit but they renewed it anyway, they produce low-cost, quality comedies and overall they seem to value quality in a higher regard than most basic cable networks. Tackling sci-fi with Del Toro's The Strain is only going to help FX stay #1 in my mind.
2 - HBO : Cult classics all around, high production value, no genre left behind (except true science-fiction, hopefully it will be featured on HBO in the future with American Gods or The Dark Tower), you feel like they can air anything they want. But their latest series, The Newsroom and Girls, are average (like, Girls doesn't deserve the backlash it unfairly got from the public but it doesn't deserve the unanimous praise from critics and award shows either), True Blood needs some fresh blood for their upcoming season, they still haven't renewed Enlightened (they better not cancel it like they cancelled Bored to Death - I won't let go of that until production on the TV movie begins). HBO is flawed too.
3 - AMC : not many networks can say that their first two series were of the same caliber as Mad Men and Breaking Bad. And respect for pulling off a massive blockbuster like The Walking Dead. Sadly, the intelligence displayed in their shows isn't matched by the executives running the network, always causing problems to showrunners. And they cancelled the great Rubicon (which also had behind-the-scenes drama after the pilot). They should learn that it will drive talent away if they go on like this.
4 - Showtime : I feel that in 2011, Showtime started to make a comeback (after 3-4 years basically focusing only on dramedies and Dexter) with Shameless & Homeland, and that it will continue with Master of Sex, Ray Donovan & Penny Dreadful, and hopefully The Vatican as well as The Affair. As of today they don't really have any cult classics (like HBO does), only outstanding seasons of very good shows, but I have a good feeling about the upcoming years on Showtime (if they finally let go of Dexter).
5 - NBC : the 2-hour block featuring Community, 30 Rock, The Office & Parks & Rec is unmatched by any other network, broadcast or cable. Many have one, perhaps two good comedies in their lineup, NBC had all four. And they also have the best new sitcom of the season, Go On. Sadly, their attitude towards Community is shameful (except the first 3 episodes, it never had The Office's support like 30 Rock and Parks & Rec did, it always has the difficult task to open the night). I appreciate their treatment of 30 Rock and The Office, allowing them both a final season, but they should treat Community better. Also, Mr. Nielsen should remember NBC exists.
6 - FOX : over the years they have tried to have many sci-fi series while other big networks usually don't, they have animated series while other broadcast networks don't, they kept Fringe alive when other networks surely wouldn't have, and they have the great Raising Hope.
7 - Starz : much like AMC, they're new to this, they want to show how cool they are by renewing for a second season shows before season 1 even premieres (Spartacus, Boss, Magic City) they shouldn't have cancelled Party Down and Boss after 2 seasons.
USA network has had a string of successes because they are on when regular tv is showing reruns. It has created some spectacular shows too. Burn Notice, White Collar, Royal Pains, Covert Affairs, Necessary Roughness, In Plain Sight, Pysch, Monk, Fairly Legal,
We seem to have very similar tastes in shows, although I've never seen Southland, Suits, and I don't watch Archer. But I figured it'd be better if I left just a few mentions on each of the networks and limit myself to just a few... because I have a ton more I watch ha.
CBS makes the shows the most people watch, not the best. Little surprised HBO is so high, even above AMC. Perhaps AMC's bad press hurts them. Also would never have guess CW was so high, but then again, they need to have shows that have loyal, persistent fans.
The CW for me - number of shows I watch wise (Supernatural, Arrow, Nikita, Vampire Diaries, Beauty and the Beast).
CBS - Person of Interest, Elementary and The Mentalist.
NBC - Grimm, Revolution and Chicago Fire
ABC - Once Upon A Time and Nashville
Syfy - Warehouse 13 and Being Human
Fox - The Following
I do watch a few others shows on some other channels (Canadian (Heartland, Saving Hope), ABC Family (Melissa and Joey), and Animal Planet/Discovery channels. No "Daytime" TV for me.
Same here! Although I think Legend of the Seeker was produced by ABC Family, which is listed as a separate network from ABC. I'd say my favourites right now are 1) The Good Wife 2) Once Upon A Time 3) Revenge. So I'm quite conflicted, too.
ABC produces Revenge and Once (and if we count Legend of the Seeker, but if I recall it was produced by ABC Family), but on the other hand, CBS has The Good Wife (best drama show of all times) and The Mentalist, as well as How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory, and Two and a Half Men (which used to be a great comedy, but it's not really worth watching after Charlie Sheen was kicked out)...
I guess I currently watch more shows on CBS, but my only real favourite of them is The Good Wife. And I'm addicted to OUAT and Revenge. So tough choice between ABC and CBS.
Blatantly CBS for me. I watch 8 shows from there! However, I do think that the C/W deserves being up there. They do have some good shows, Arrow, Nikita. Even the stuff I don't watch, people seem to love.
No surprise to see ABC and CBS up there. Kind of surprised about the CW even though I agree but I had to go with USA Network. I'm going by percentages of good shows to just ok shows. Most networks have far more 'ok' shows than quality ones. 'ok' can mean anywhere from ok to crap...
Wow that's difficult. Every time I decide based on my current favorite shows...I hit a show's second season and it's no where near as good as its first season. I'm not sure I can pick one.
I voted for NBC because it has Community and 30 rock, two of my favourite comedies, otherwise I would say ABC because it had Modern family, Revenge, Once Upon A time, and The CW has Arrow!
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteREALLY conflicted between CBS and ABC.

perhaps SHIELD for ABC Sunday 10pm or Thursday 8pm? As for NBC Thursdays at 10pm, maybe Crossbones...
ReplyDeletejust my opinion.
Exactly the same. You actually listed all the same shows in all the networks as I would've with the addition of Entourage for HBO, Southland for TNT, Suits for USA and Archer, Justified and The Shield for FX.

Difficult just to choose one network. I like FX, AMC and HBO.
ReplyDeleteEasily AMC and HBO...
ReplyDeleteHbo
ReplyDeleteRight now, gotta go with CBS. I seem to be on that channel more than others.
ReplyDeleteLet's be honest, ABC will win this poll on account of Castle and OUAT being two of the most popular shows on this site.
ReplyDeleteFor me I have to break it down:
on network it's CBS: The Mentalist and Person of Interest being the highlights. Elementary, Blue Bloods, Criminal Minds, Vegas are all good too.
on cable it's FX: The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, The Killing, Mad Men and Hell on Wheels are all great.
In the past it would've been NBC, but aside from Revolution and Grimm, it's dire these days.

ReplyDeleteAlmost every series I watch are on CW, so to me it's obvious...But there definitely are amazing series on other networks..
ReplyDeleteNot LOST, LOTS - legend of the seeker ;]
ReplyDeletedifferent abbreviations
HBO & Showtime aren't as good as they were 4-5 years ago so I went with FX Network.
ReplyDeleteAMC and FX are 1A and 1B for me I think...
ReplyDeleteFX is not as consistent, but they make more series including comedies etc..

ReplyDeleteI couldn't choose between CW,AbcFamily and abc"These are the main networks I watch.
ReplyDeleteHBO & The CW
