Anna Friel has been cast opposite Kyle Chandler in Showtime’s The Vatican – the same week that her Pushing Daisies co-star Lee Pace booked a cable pilot of his own.
The project, directed by Ridley Scott and penned by Paul Attanasio (House), is a provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics – set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church. Chandler’s character is the progressive Archbishop of New York, who causes a stir within the hierarchy of the Church.
Friel will play Kayla Duffy, younger sister/foil to Chandler’s Cardinal Thomas Duffy. Kayla is a sexually active, hard-partying New Yorker who rebels against the Church but loves her brother very deeply — and although they’re close, she’s a liability to his professional goals.

I would have never guessed Anna Friel for a project like this, that is until I read the description of her character.
ReplyDeleteSo it's Anna Friel who's joining the Vatican? I did not see that coming,
ReplyDeleteSeriously, it's pretty amusing that The Vatican's cast is filling up nowadays considering what's happening.
Very much hoping this show gets picked up to series (and given the talent involved, it will).
Btw, the reference to Lee Pace in this article is about his starring role in AMC's exciting pilot Hart and Catch Fire (from Breaking Bad exec producers) talking about the personal computing boom in the 80s.
Sweet!
ReplyDeleteI love Anna.
I'm interested to see how this Pilot shapes up. Chandler and Friel are awesome.
ReplyDeleteIf it does go to series, I could see there being serious controversy surrounding it, depending on the subject matter. But nonetheless, I'm very interested.
Well I'll say this about this particular pilot: it certainly is in the right network. Interesting casting choices so far.
