The Selection - Casts its prince

1 Mar 2013

Newcomer Michael Malarkey will play Maxon, the charming, self-serving and untrustworthy son of the king and queen who are not pleased with his reckless behavior. He's thrilled to have a group of young women competing for his affections and is intrigued by the feisty labor-class girl America.

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Malarkey grew up in Ohio and resides in London, where he trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. His theater credits include London productions of The Great Gatsby, Million Dollar Quartet and Arthur. On the TV side, his credits include the Irish drama Raw.
Malarkey steps into the role played by Ethan Peck in The CW's first incarnation of its Hunger Games-ish pilot. Sean Patrick Thomas and Peta Sergeant will reprise their roles in the retooled Selection pilot.

Additionally Celia Massingham will reprise her role as Celeste, a young girl competing in The Selection to become wife of Prince Maxon (Michael Malarkey).
This time around the CW seems to be mostly casting older more unknown actors than the first pilot, the first pilot supposedly suffered from casting actors the network wanted (such as William Moseley) that didn't fit the parts.

  1. I don't like Ethan Peck so I'm glad they kicked him. Btw, Michael is H.O.T.!

  3. "This time around the CW seems to be mostly casting older more unknown actors than the first pilot" means this time the CW has less budget for this pilot and less $ to spend on known actors.. oh well, maybe the reduced budget will help the CW debut four new fall shows next year instead of 3.

Funny that the female lead is played by an Israeli actress and the mail lead is played by a Lebanese actor. Israel and Lebanon are not exactly friends..

  4. I agree. I think 4 new shows is the way to go for the cw, considering one of them is pretty much self promoted - the originals, if it airs (as it will) after the vampire diaries.

  5. Probably same budget but went to other stuff like filming locations sets ,etc. filming in hungary might be unappealing to American actors which would explain the international cast

  6. I don't think filming in Hungary is more expensive than in Canada. I think Hungary is less expensive because the costs of living and average salaries are lower in Hungary. I think you are right about American actors not finding it appealing though so that could be one of the reasons.

  7. The cast from the original show made the show targeted for teen girls. With the revamping of the script and the new recasting its targeted to appeal to a wider audience. The only way cw shows are successful is if they can bring in males or older audience like arrow, TVD and supernatural.

As for the actors being unknown that doesn't mean they can't act. There are lots of known actors that are horrible actors, and assuming these ones can act they are a definitely an upgrade from the last ones especially aimee teegarden who is way to weak an actress to carry a show.

I'm so confused. This Maxon isn't the Maxon I know from the book (yes, I read the book). But I guess we'll see how they pull it off.

  10. Interesting casting choice. I don't know him, but I am bias over British trained actors so I'll give this a "YAY".

  11. I disliked him in Gossip Girl so, the dislike just continues :D

  12. Well I loved him on 10 Things I hate about you so the "liking" continues.

  13. :-) I know it's bad not like anybody just based on one (short) role but I just don't find the actor likeable.

  14. Nah, it's fine. Sometimes actors just don't click wit you. I mean I try not to be that way but there have been situations where you can't really help it, so I get it. Still I'm always willing to give them another shot. Have you seen 10TIHAY?

  15. Is it the series with the chick from What a Girl Wants? I'm not sure...
But I've been looking forward to The Selection since last year even with Ethan so I'd give it/him a shot either way :-)

  17. Well, the premise sounds interesting + Lindsey Shaw (?!) from PLL?! (Don't judge me, my 12 yrs-old sis made me watch it (since 2nd season) and I adore the actress who play Hanna :D)
