-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS remained the network to beat in the overnights on Thursday despite facing a 90-minute edition of “American Idol,” outdelivering Fox by 1.4 overnight rating points. Red-hot “The Big Bang Theory” topped the night, of course, with an 11.3 rating/18 share at 8 p.m. And that, comparably, was 13 percent above the year-ago telecast (10.0/16 on 3/08/12).

Next on the Eye net was veteran “Two and a Half Men” at a second-place 8.6/14 at 8:30 p.m. (one-tenth of a rating point behind competing “American Idol”), followed by sophomore “Person of Interest” (#1: 9.6/16 at 9 p.m.) and a repeat of freshman “Elementary” (#1: 5.8/ 11 at 10 p.m.). Consider “Elementary” a shoo-in for renewal for next season.

The 90-minute edition of “American Idol,” featuring the unveiling of the top 10 finalists, scored an 8.7/14 in the overnights from 8-9:30 p.m. Comparably, that finished second behind CBS in the 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. half-hours (and first at 8:30 p.m.), with a loss of 26 percent from a one-hour edition on the year-ago evening (11.7/19 on 3/08/12).

A later edition of “Glee” on Fox led out “American Idol” with a 4.7/ 8 from 9:30-10:30 p.m. (5.2/ 8 to 4.3/ 7 by half-hour). Comparably, overnight retention for “Glee” out of the 9 p.m. portion of “Idol” (9.3/15) was just 51 percent. That said, is it time for these students to officially graduate?

ABC filled the 8 p.m. hour vacated by canceled “Zero Hour” with an encore of “Shark Tank” at a third-place 3.3/ 5 in the overnight. Next on the alphabet net were encore telecasts of “Grey’s Anatomy” (#4: 2.8/ 5) and “Scandal” (#2: 3.2/ 6) from 9-11 p.m.

In a mixture of repeats and originals, “Community” on NBC opened with a weak 2.2/ 3 at 8 p.m., which was 27 percent below year-ago occupant “30 Rock” (3.0/ 5 on 3/08/12). Stop laughing, Chevy Chase! Next on the Peacock net were repeats of “Parks and Recreation” (#4: 1.6/ 3) and “The Office” (#4: 1.7/ 3) from 8:30-9:30 p.m., followed by an original installment of struggling “1600 Penn” (#4: 1.6/ 3 at 9:30 p.m.) and an encore of “Law & Order: SVU” (#3: 2.9/ 6 at 10 p.m.).

Last were repeats of “The Vampire Diaries” (0.9/ 2) and “Beauty and the Beast” (0.7/ 1) on The CW.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) we post the TV Ratings for the previous night.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database.
