----------

-Winners:
“American Idol” (Fox), “Survivor: Caramoan” (CBS)

-Losers:
“Whitney” (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy Wednesday victory for Fox, which featured two-hours of “American Idol.” But an 8.5 rating/13 share in the overnights for “Idol” was 31 percent below the 12.4/19 on the comparable year-ago evening. Dominance is certainly good, and Fox will also win the evening in all key demos. But ongoing erosion of this magnitude this season is a definite concern for the future.

The night’s other veteran reality competition, “Survivor: Caramoan” on CBS, scored a respectable 6.3/10 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m. And that, comparably, trailed the first hour of “American Idol” (8.4/14) by 25 percent. But compared to the year-ago edition, “Survivor” One World” (6.4/10 on 3/07/12), this was down by just two percent. The moral of the story: The stronger you are, the greater the fall, and “American Idol” has lost more than half of its once formidable sized audience. “Survivor” has not.

Leading out of “Survivor: Caramoan” on the Eye net were encores of “Criminal Minds” (#2: 4.7/ 8) and “CSI” (#1: 4.4/ 8) from 9-11 p.m. Sixty-five percent of last night’s schedule was, in fact, repeats.

In the distant No. 3 spot overall was ABC, which featured only two original episodes: “The Neighbors” and “Suburgatory.” Freshman “The Neighbors,” which is certainly not the clinker many critics anticipated (myself included), finished third at 8:30 p.m. with a 4.0/ 6. Comparably, the retention out of an encore of “The Middle” (4.3/ 7 at 8 p.m.) was solid at 93 percent. Sophomore “Suburgatory,” meanwhile, was third with a 3.6/ 6 at 9:30 p.m. And that held 84 percent of its repeat “Modern Family” lead-in (#3: 4.3/ 7 at 9 p.m.).

Planning ahead, ABC would be wise not to renew both “The Neighbors” and “Suburgatory.” While “Suburgatory” might be a better bet for survival because it already has two seasons under its belt, “The Neighbors” is more of a standout.

ABC capped off the evening with an encore of critically acclaimed drama “Nashville, “which was third with a 2.4/ 4.

Elsewhere, an original episode of struggling NBC sitcom “Whitney” opened with a 2.7/ 4 (#4) at 8 p.m. And that led into a repeat of “Whitney” at a 2.0/ 3 (#4) at 8:30 p.m. Why NBC gave this laugh-challenged half-hour a second season is a mystery to begin with.

Next on the Peacock net were encores of “Law & Order: SVU” (#4: 3.1/ 5) and certain to be renewed “Chicago Fire” (#2: 2.7/ 5) from 9-11 p.m. The CW closed the night with repeats of “Arrow” (#5: 1.4/ 2) and “Supernatural” (#5: 0.9/ 1), which were both already greenlit for 2013-14.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) we post the TV Ratings for the previous night.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. 1. Very happy for The Neighbors! Though people constantly bash it and thought it would fail, it has turned out to be a very pleasant show and sometimes more entertaining and heartwarming than this second half of Modern Family

  2. The Neigbours and Suburgatory are sure to fall pretty hard this week given the lack of new The Middle and Modern Family.

  4. Berman bash on shows he doesn't like, nothing new....Anyway Suburgatory is safe and so TheNeighbors and this one have a good retention over The Middle ( 1.9 vs 1.7 or 2.2 vs 1.9 ecc)
