-Ratings Breakdown:
The return of “The Voice” on NBC, featuring new judges Usher and Shakira, was off and running. NBC finished second overall on this final Monday in March, trailing the home of “Dancing With the Stars,” ABC, by 20 percent. And it will, no doubt, rank first for the evening among adults 18-49 (and other young adult demographics).

“The Voice” averaged a second-place 8.7 rating/13 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., peaking in the 9:30 p.m. half-hour with a 9.1/14. Comparably, this was up by nine percent over the fall 2012 season-opener (8.0/12 on 9/10/12), and up 13 percent from the year-ago evening (7.7/12 on 3/26/12), which translated into 12.0 million viewers and a 4.5 rating/12 share among adults 18-49 (based on the Live Plus Same Day data). Relax, NBC…”The Voice” is still very much alive and well.

The return of NBC drama “Revolution” finished third at 10 p.m., with a 4.5/ 8. Comparably, that dipped by 43 percent from its series-opener (7.9/13 on 9/17/12), and the retention for “Revolution” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” was only 50 percent. But this was 80 percent above the series-finale of drama “Deception” one week earlier (2.5/ 4 on March 18), and “Revolution” does have a good shot of winning the time period among adults 18-49.

Opposite “The Voice,” “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC won the 8-10 p.m. block, with a 10.1/15 in the overnights. Comparably, however, this was down by 21 percent from the 12.8/20 on the year-ago evening, and 16 percent from the 12.1/18 for the week-ago season premiere. But a victory is still a victory. “Castle” followed with a dominant 7.1/13 at 10 p.m., which declined by 17 percent from the 8.6/14 on the year-ago evening.

Opposite both “Dancing With the Stars” and “The Voice,” CBS’ two-hour sitcom block dropped by 11 percent week-to-week. “How I Met Your Mother,” which concludes next season, opened with a third-place 4.8/ 7 at 8 p.m. Next was “Rules of Engagement” (#4: 4.1/ 6 at 8:30 p.m.), which is not expected back next season, followed by “2 Broke Girls” (#3: 5.5/ 8) and compatible “Mike & Molly” (#3: 5.3/ 8) from 9-10 p.m. Three year-old “Hawaii Five-O” finished second at 10 p.m. with a 5.5/10. Given the increased competition, CBS is no longer the force it once was on Monday.

Over at Fox, the combination of already renewed “Bones” (#4: 4.5/ 7) and “The Following” (#4: 4.4/ 7) beat the year-ago two-hour series-finale of “Alcatraz” (3.5/ 5 on 3/26/12) by 27 percent. And The CW capped off the evening with freshman “The Carrie Diaries” (#5: 0.7/ 1), which barely registered, and a repeat of “Hart of Dixie” (#5: 0.4/ 1).

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) we post the TV Ratings for the previous night.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)
