-Ratings Breakdown:
The return of “The Voice” on NBC, featuring new judges Usher and Shakira, was off and running. NBC finished second overall on this final Monday in March, trailing the home of “Dancing With the Stars,” ABC, by 20 percent. And it will, no doubt, rank first for the evening among adults 18-49 (and other young adult demographics).
“The Voice” averaged a second-place 8.7 rating/13 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., peaking in the 9:30 p.m. half-hour with a 9.1/14. Comparably, this was up by nine percent over the fall 2012 season-opener (8.0/12 on 9/10/12), and up 13 percent from the year-ago evening (7.7/12 on 3/26/12), which translated into 12.0 million viewers and a 4.5 rating/12 share among adults 18-49 (based on the Live Plus Same Day data). Relax, NBC…”The Voice” is still very much alive and well.
The return of NBC drama “Revolution” finished third at 10 p.m., with a 4.5/ 8. Comparably, that dipped by 43 percent from its series-opener (7.9/13 on 9/17/12), and the retention for “Revolution” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” was only 50 percent. But this was 80 percent above the series-finale of drama “Deception” one week earlier (2.5/ 4 on March 18), and “Revolution” does have a good shot of winning the time period among adults 18-49.
Opposite “The Voice,” “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC won the 8-10 p.m. block, with a 10.1/15 in the overnights. Comparably, however, this was down by 21 percent from the 12.8/20 on the year-ago evening, and 16 percent from the 12.1/18 for the week-ago season premiere. But a victory is still a victory. “Castle” followed with a dominant 7.1/13 at 10 p.m., which declined by 17 percent from the 8.6/14 on the year-ago evening.
Opposite both “Dancing With the Stars” and “The Voice,” CBS’ two-hour sitcom block dropped by 11 percent week-to-week. “How I Met Your Mother,” which concludes next season, opened with a third-place 4.8/ 7 at 8 p.m. Next was “Rules of Engagement” (#4: 4.1/ 6 at 8:30 p.m.), which is not expected back next season, followed by “2 Broke Girls” (#3: 5.5/ 8) and compatible “Mike & Molly” (#3: 5.3/ 8) from 9-10 p.m. Three year-old “Hawaii Five-O” finished second at 10 p.m. with a 5.5/10. Given the increased competition, CBS is no longer the force it once was on Monday.
Over at Fox, the combination of already renewed “Bones” (#4: 4.5/ 7) and “The Following” (#4: 4.4/ 7) beat the year-ago two-hour series-finale of “Alcatraz” (3.5/ 5 on 3/26/12) by 27 percent. And The CW capped off the evening with freshman “The Carrie Diaries” (#5: 0.7/ 1), which barely registered, and a repeat of “Hart of Dixie” (#5: 0.4/ 1).

Go The Voice.. .<3
ReplyDeleteBig night last night... <3
I believe Castle will be about 1.9:(
ReplyDeleteSo does this mean that Revolution fared better than most of NBC's sci-fi dramas that go on 4 month long hiatus? If so, that in itself is worth of renewal.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't look good for Bones. I just really hope it stayed at or above 2.0.
ReplyDeleteit doesn't look very good to revolution to be honest. although it is very hard to get any idea from this data
ReplyDeleteHere's a hope you're wrong like last week. ;)
ReplyDeleteThe last time Castle was at a 2.0 it was 6.2/11 in the overnights on 2/4. You can't tell what the demo will be from the current data.
ReplyDeleteBones is already renewed so it doesn't really matter, and it's still one of the higher ranked FOX shows.
ReplyDeleteI know, but I still want it to do well. Plus, I don't want it to get stuck on Fridays next season.
ReplyDeleteI hope, and would love, to be wrong:)
ReplyDeleteYes, but last week it was 7.7/13 and it lead to a 2.2...but the truth is that it´s impossible to guess the demo from these numbers...
ReplyDeleteWe don't know, we'll have to wait for the numbers because Deception isn't exactly a good indicator.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed folks. Did NBC's gambit worked? We'll know soon enough. Well, you'll know soon enough, I have no idea how ratings work in the grander scheme of things, so I'll probably just ask if that's good.
ReplyDeletethey should be out very soon. i am pretty excited myself. I was kind of expecting to have top25 markets on on such a huge night
ReplyDelete2.7 for Revolution!!!! Much like Grimm's return was only a small drop, renewal any day now methinks.
ReplyDeleteRevolution is 19% ahead of Smash from last year. Can't see this being cancelled.
ReplyDeleteExcept Smash was falling dramatically throughout the first season, while Revolution did fall after its premiere it seems to have settled.
ReplyDeleteBe worried how it does when it premieres next season if it gets renewed.
ReplyDeletePhew, thank God for Revolution. I was afraid it would go waaaay down in ratings.
ReplyDeleteexcellent retention for Castle, better than I was expected! DWTS bad ratings as I was predicted :(
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty upset for Bones. I don't think I've ever seen the numbers that low. I hope it doesn't get stuck with Fridays next season. And last night's episode was really good! The numbers don't look so good for everyone, anyways.
ReplyDeleteThat's a season low for HIMYM. I wasn't expecting that, seeing that it was one of the best episodes of the season.
ReplyDeleteOh thank God for Revolution! I was worried.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised to see Bones so low. :( It was a really good ep last night. The last few eps have had a early generation feel I think.
ReplyDeleteOuch for TCD and HoD.
I don't really understand US ratings. How does this fare for Hawaii Five-0?
ReplyDeleteHoD was an out of timeslot rerun. It airs on Tuesdays.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's a rerun so it doesn't matter that much, it's the original episodes that actually count. All this proves is that TCD and HoD are not compatible with each other.
ReplyDeleteIt's very decent, but not outstanding. I was a little worried about last night because Revolution was back and before idiotic NBC put it on hiatus, it was dominating the time slot. The fact that H50 reached 2.0 and came in 2nd is an improvement over what it was getting before the Revolution's hiatus. During that time, it was having a hard time reaching 2.0. I also thought that last night's episode was the best non - serialized episode of the season.
ReplyDeleteIts in no danger of cancellation, it rates ok and is nearing syndication
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be surprised if NBC decide to keep it behind The Voice next year just to ensure it stays a hit.
ReplyDeleteI know that. I only noticed because BATB have been rerunning on an odd night so I was curious to see how other shows do in comparison.
ReplyDeleteI loved Castle last night, once the show gets a little dull they always find a charming way to bring it back to life! This should mean that Castle is a shoe in for renewals, the majority of the season as been successful enough.
ReplyDeleteAt this point ratings are almost irrelevant for How I Met Your Mother. Whatever the rating, the show is produced at a loss. Revenue comes from syndication, DVD sales, international airing, etc...
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind - even at a season low it's still in top 3 for the demo for the night!
FUCK THIS SHIT! I HATE THE VOICE AND DWTS! I HATE!
ReplyDeleteI hate DWTS and The Voice ='(
ReplyDeleteI hate how DWTS and The Voice stole all the viewers for Bones.
