On the heels of the back-to-back departures of Jessica Brown Findlay (Sybil) and Dan Stevens (Matthew), now word comes that Siobhan Finneran — who has played wretched maid Sarah O’Brien since the show’s launch — will not be back for the PBS smash’s upcoming fourth season.

ReplyDeleteI can't say that i'm sad about this news as I was when I read that Dan and Jessica were leaving the show. O'Brien was never one of my favorites characters.
ReplyDeleteI agree that she's a hard character to "like", but I always liked the Mrs. Danvers persona she carried with her and elements she added to Cora and Thomas plots. So to some degree, I'll miss the drama created with her schemes (and I'm curious how they will write her out?!), but Downton seems to be about shifting characters around in the wake of changing times, so it will be interesting to see who takes her place and how that all works out!

ReplyDeleteIn Season three Thomas spreads the rumor to Mosley that Mrs. O'Brien was going to leave and look for work elsewhere....Mosley, trying to be important, mentions this to Lady Grantham (Cora) and she gets terribly put off that O'Brien wouldn't tell her and that she was leaving (which was a lie)...
