Here is another big piece of evidence that the upcoming eighth season will be the last outing for Dexter.
While on a conference call Monday, CBS Corp. president and CEO Les Moonves referred to the new season of the serial killer thriller as the “last” one for the show, Broadcast & Cable first reported. During a question-and-answer session at Deutsche Bank’s 2013 dbAccess Media, Internet & Telecom Conference in Palm Beach., the moderator made a reference to Dexter “going off the air” while asking the executive what’s coming down Showtime’s creative pipeline. Moonves can be heard on the conference call audio playback replying, “We have Ray Donovan coming on, with Liev Schreiber, which comes on with Dexter‘s last season starting in June…”

8 seasons is a great run, so yeah they should just officially announce it.
ReplyDeleteBetter announce it now then "cancel" the show afterwards.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love this show and thought last season was some fo the best episodes to date, it just makes sense to end it after the 8 seasons. I cant imagine what would happen to the story line if they stretch it too much. Saying that if they find a way that is convincing I will still be a fan.
ReplyDeleteit makes perfect sense now with Deb knowing and especially after she shot LaGuerta last season. I just hope they have time to really think and cook an epic finale for this amazing series!
ReplyDeleteWell wasn't this already announced two years ago when they renewed the show after season 6?
ReplyDeleteYa, but in other interviews since they have alluded to the possibility of another one. Season 7's premiere I think broke some kind of rating record for Dexter and Showtime.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think it feels like we have come to a point. I think it would be good for this to be the final season.
I hope so!
ReplyDeleteEven if the quality has not dropped off, some shows just run their course. IF they want to continue Dexter past next year it would almost have to be a reboot with Dexter going someplace outside of Miami...
Not only the premiere, season 7 broke the records for all Showtime shows two or three times... It is by far the most successful season of Dexter ever, in all the categories like number of live views, popularity on social media and professional critique's reviews .. So lots of people were worried that Showtime won't let go of Dexter now that it in it's best shape... Even Scott Buck said that them, as Dexter makers, would want to end with season 8, but they don't know whether Showtime will let them do that...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the clarity on the ratings! :D
ReplyDeleteI disagree a bit about Hannah and/or new characters in the final season.
I have always felt that Dexter and the secondary characters and Big Bads reflect and shape the identities of Dexter and Deb, whom I think have been lost in their identities since the beginnings of the season.
Since Hannah was Dexter's last introduced love interest, and because she conveys many shades of the previous women Dexter has been with/and or other women in the series), and because of the timing of her arrival in the series, Hannah, especially for Deb is an awaking to her own sense of morality in terms of family, love, and criminal justice.
Additionally this "Ice Princess" motif that was used also then goes back to Dexter's original thesis of exploring a partner in crime and not really wanting to be in this alone, as Brian was a possible missed opportunity that I think has haunted Dexter by choosing Deb and never finding a partner that suits HIS own needs.
If the story is about Deb and Dexter coming together and/or Deb and Dexter forever being apart, then we have to have things that drive that final exploration into that relationship and since Hannah provided a chance to contest this in terms of Deb's feelings, it makes sense for her to continue to be a force in achieving whatever it is the writer's want to achieve, since she is established and left blowing to wind. IMO having her would give a kind of solidarity to the series by having it connect back to last and by extension the beginnings of the series since she embodies combined themes presented by many former women characters.
It's not that easy. Good producers and writers can make up a good new story, they can bring in new and interesting characters. But on the other side it is better to end the show if they run out of ideas. Otherwise they would repeat themselves and make up thing that makes no sense.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, there won't be a cancelation. They said, that S8 would be the last and that they would end it properly. Now they said that there may be a S9. It's not for sure yet, but they promised, that either way they will bring it to a good end (so, no open ending as it is usual with canceled shows).
ReplyDeleteold news, but still can't wait to see the final season
ReplyDelete"Otherwise they would repeat themselves and make up thing that makes no sense."
ReplyDeleteall the more reason! :D
The producers and writers have lost a lot, in my opinion. Still love the show but it's not the same.
