Dallas - Episode 2.08 - JR's Masterpiece - Preview

Previously on Dallas: JR Ewing is working on an oil deal when he speaks with John Ross over the phone about a new scheme. After being as sentimental as he could, JR Ewing was gunned down and the world was left to ponder the classic question again. Who shot JR?

Now on Dallas: The episode picks up mere hours after the shooting of JR Ewing. Sadly, Larry Hagman will never again be able to grace our televisions as JR Ewing with his wit and evil genius. Even though it is the first episode of Dallas without the oil tycoon, his presence is felt throughout the episode. This starts off with a special opening theme to honor the fallen villain (well, let’s be honest… JR was everyone’s evil hero).

The episode doesn't waste much time getting straight to the memorial service. A number of stars make guest appearances at the memorial service including some of the cast of the original series. They share some of their favorite JR stories. Lucy says that JR told her that she should have her plastic surgeon husband design her a new face… one without a mouth. It’s amazing that any of these people actually liked JR. As John Ross comments, half of the people are there to make sure he really is dead and the other half is there for the drinks. It doesn't take long for the memorial service to start the Ewing blood boiling. Cliff Barnes makes a special appearance to “pay his disrespects”. The Ewing family unites and things get interesting as it is clear that the Ewing/Barnes feud does not die with JR. If JR were there he would likely have had something witty to say about how things were just getting started and would no doubt be laughing his evil laugh with pride.

Also, just because JR is dead doesn't mean he can’t have the last word. We learn that JR sent a letter to multiple members of his family. Sue Ellen reads her letter at the graveside service and one can’t help but wonder if the tears are real. This episode had to be hard for the stars as they are saying goodbye not only to JR, but also to their friend. Overall, the cast did an amazing job, but Linda Gray’s acting in particular was superb. Bobby Ewing also gets a letter, but he isn't talking just yet. Bobby comments that he knew JR would have one more trick left up his sleeve and it is a good one.

This episode ranks in at least the Top 10 of my Dallas favorites and will certainly be a favorite for fellow JR fans. Even though it will be sad to see JR’s last masterpiece play out, one thing is for sure. It’s gonna be a hell of a ride.

Don’t forget to tune into “JR’s Masterpiece” tomorrow (Monday) at 9/8c on TNT and celebrate tomorrow as Larry Hagman Day!
