I watch most things online so I think this is a great way for things to move forward but I think its still a while off before it will make a big impact.
I still watch most things on my TV, but think it's great that online corporations like Netflix or Amazon want to start creating and steaming there own material and that they may support the underdog, but I think it will take a few years to take off and/or convince the public that just because it didn't air on TV, doesn't mean it isn't good.
Dont think it'll be stealing any viewers away from a good old fashioned tv set, most likely people who want to watch the shows Netflicks provides will do so in a ddition to the ones they watch on tv.
I know many people look at Netflix and their competitors as mobile viewing etc, but Netflix streaming shows are easily watched on a TV. For that matter ANY streaming online content is easily watched on TV these days and THAT is where media technology is headed.
Between Home Theatre PCs (HTPCs), internet ready TVs, internet BD and DVD players, media streaming devices like AppleTV, Boxee, Roku and their ilk the line between "Online viewing" and more traditional TV viewing methods like OTA, cable, and satellite is becoming blurred.
Personally I have had a HTPC record any over the air (OTA) broadcasts for almost 10 years now. My HTPC has allowed to watch ANY online content , BDs and DVDs from any region, any digital content downloaded, OTA broadcasts, and any cable broadcast. Now as technology has advanced I can stream any of that content to any mobile device on my home network or any device or PC with access to the internet with the help of a few great programs or apps.
Now, back to the topic in a more direct way.... I think Netflix and other streaming content providers will push the more traditional networks to eventually have more live streaming content of their own. That will be years down the road, but in the meantime I expect they will enlarge their streaming content to include more than the most recent 3 or 4 episodes and highlight clips, with many having full seasons available.
I think the streaming only companies will push the forefront and be taken advantage of by mostly the tech-savvy people, but bits and pieces of their methods strategies and technologies will be picked up by the broadcast networks until eventually media will be broadcast over the air and online simultaneously.
The connected media home is still in its early stages, but I can see a house that is completely connected in every room being a very common thing within decades.Thankfully Netflix and others are taking us there one small step at a time....
I really hope Netflix has success with this as I'm a subscriber. I haven't watched House of Cards yet, but I'm totally stoked for the new episodes of Arrested Development and I'm really hoping Hemlock Grove is popular enough for Netflix to experiment with other horror/fanatsy/sci fi series.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I'm really excited for Hemlock Grove and Season 4 of Arrested Development. This new wave of shows gives hope to series.

ReplyDeleteI hope so.... at the very least it might give networks more incentive to put more effort into their online resources,
ReplyDeleteIt depends, what pun?
