Community (NBC), Parks and Recreation (NBC), The Office (NBC), 1600 Penn (NBC), Glee (Fox), Beauty and the Beast (CW), Do No Harm (NBC)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown:
It was another Thursday overnight sweep for CBS, which populated the evening with its regularly scheduled line-up of The Big Bang Theory (11.7 rating/19 share -- #1 for the evening), Two and a Half Men (9.1/14), Person of Interest (9.3/ 15) and Elementary (7.3/13), which did not get much of a boost despite the added exposure from airing out of Super Bowl XLVII last Sunday. Competing Scandal on ABC (#2: 6.1/10), which is poised for time period victory among adults 18-49, is the hot ticket in the Thursday 10 p.m. hour.
In season-premiere news, critically acclaimed NBC sitcom Community was dead on return with a mere 2.5/ 4 at 8 p.m. Combined with lead-out Parks and Recreation, which also scored a 2.5/ 4, the two comedies dipped by an average of 22 percent from a one-hour installment of 30 Rock on the year-ago evening (3.2/ 5 on 2/09/12). Not so funny, is it?
Next on NBC was The Office (#4: 3.0/ 5 at 9 p.m.), which will officially conclude with a one-hour installment (episode No. 200) on May 16, followed by episode four of 1600 Penn at a series-low 2.0/ 3 (#4) at 9:30 p.m. In what could very well be NBC’s lowest overnight rating historically for an original scripted drama in the Thursday 10 p.m. hour, episode two of Do No Harm capped off the night with an abysmal 1.6/ 3. Comparably, that declined by 33 percent from its DOA arrival one week earlier (2.4/ 4 on Jan. 31). And Do No Harm was down by 43 percent from an encore of The Voice on the year-ago evening (2.8/ 5 on 2/09/12). Tick, tock…the cancellation clock is rapidly ticking.
Over at Fox, the once unstoppable American Idol finished second behind the CBS comedies, with an 8.4/14 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m. One year earlier it scored a 12.0/19. And lead-out Glee, which needs to officially graduate at this point, slipped to distant third-place 3.8/ 7 from 9-10 p.m. Compared to failed year-ago occupant The Finder (4.3/ 7 on 2/09/12), this was a loss of 12 percent. Like any high school based series, the shelf life for Glee is limited.
Elsewhere, a repeat of Shark Tank opened the evening for ABC with a third-place 3.6/ 6 from 8-9 p.m., which was 44 percent above NBC’s aforementioned Community and Parks and Recreation. Next was veteran Grey’s Anatomy, which finished second with 6.8/11 at 9 p.m. (on par with the year-ago evening), followed by sophomore Scandal at a very compatible 6.1/11 at 10 p.m. (#2). Comparably, Scandal built from year-ago occupant Private Practice (5.0/ 9 on 2/09/12) by 22 percent, with retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Grey’s Anatomy (6.7/11) of a very solid 91 percent. Note to the cast of Scandal: Your renewal is on its way!
The CW capped off the evening with The Vampire Diaries (#5: 2.1/ 3), which decreased by 16 percent from one year earlier (2.5/ 4 on 2/09/12), followed by sluggish Beauty and the Beast at a 1.2/ 2 (#5) from 9-10 p.m. Not so beautiful, is it?

I hate Thursday ratings - especially now that Community is back. So depressing
ReplyDeleteOf course Elementary didn't get a big boost after the superbowl, the superbowl ran late because of the power outage, and ya know some people do have to work the next day....what a jerk..
ReplyDeleteactually BATB is a great series ! i Don't like that kinda wild shows with Blood & Anger ... TVD & BATB R my Fav shows :)
ReplyDeleteI still can't believe how many people watch TBBT... It's not what it was on Seasons 1 and 2, becoming kind of a 2&HM 2.0... Except for Sheldon on last week episode and Howard, all the other characters are stuck since Season 2(Sheldon grow a little last week), Raj being a complete bore... How is that a good show? The only good character left on that show is Howard...
ReplyDeleteIf i were Troy or Britta, i'll ask a wish so people stoped being so idiotic and simple and watch TV's Number 1 Comedy: COMMUNITY.
I hope BATB adjusts up, it was a great episode yesterday!
ReplyDeleteBoy when he doesn't like a show he really finds reasons to make comments. :/ Elementary is doing quite nicely!
ReplyDeleteAnd lead-out Glee, which needs to officially graduate at this point... Oh boy, this guy has absolutely NO idea about how TV works. Glee isn't going anywhere.
ReplyDeleteGrey's is down, but still doing great. Season 10 HAS to be the last season.
ReplyDeleteScandal is doing a great job. The show has such a loyal fanbase. I have no doubt it will overtake Grey's this season. Although now that whole who-tried-to-kill-the-president story is kinda over, I'm very curious about next week's ratings.
Such a shame that Community and Parks have these terrible ratings. I love both and I think they should be renewed.
I totally agree with you. Glee is STILL going very okay and even if the ratings stay that way, they can make at least 2 more seasons LOL !
ReplyDelete#sixseasonsandamovie
ReplyDeleteI really cannot believe that Two and a Half Men is still ranking that high. And they need to move NBC's Do No Harm so that it will can a chance. Scandal is a beast I love it, I never ever watched Grey's Anatomy until Scandal and I only now watch Greys to get to Scandal
ReplyDeleteDo No Harm is dead, they arent going to move it to give it a chance they're going to move it right off the schedule.
ReplyDeleteyou r totally right
ReplyDeleteI love Marc Berman's (not spoilertv) ratings reviews especially for Thursday nights. I feel as though he writes the same review each week. Yes, NBC's Thursday night ratings are pitiful. Remember when Thursday for that network was Must Watch TV?! This week there was a lot of talk about how Smash's rating were not great. Well, compared to the "beloved" Parks and Rec, the ratings were not that bad.
ReplyDelete1.8 is fine(fyne) for Community :) Up from S3 premier!
ReplyDeleteCommunity and Parks don't look as bad once you compare it to other shows like Do No Harm, Smash, and Deception. Not great, but could've been a lot worse.
ReplyDeleteBig Bang has definitely built up from years hence the ever increasing fan base. It's not selective humor and the jokes, not like Community, maybe cliche but they work and the characters feel true to life and they haven't stuck the same. Plus for someone who thinks it's not as good as 1 and 2, you seem to watch a lot of it now
ReplyDeleteGrey's and Scandal are the best and i agree with Two and Half Men, but Do No Harm was just horrible.
ReplyDeleteAt this point - I could care less about the ratings for Community. The lack of Dan Harmon has chang-ed the show into another typical show that tries to hard but doesn't succeed. I miss the Harmon era.
ReplyDeleteugh, what was so different about it?
ReplyDeleteEven if Dan was there, it would be different. Everything changes.
Yay for Scandal ! Oh so very deserved !
ReplyDeleteIf glee gets renewed for season 5, I wouldn't be surprise if its was its final.
ReplyDeleteTBBT and POI rules..............and CBS waste a time slot at super bowl to promote Elementary and don't work, I saw this coming enough.
ReplyDeleteThere's only been one new episode without him so far, give it a chance to find it's feet.
ReplyDeleteCommunity is still a great show, but I think no one expects it to get another season. Give it a week or two and it'll sink to laughable levels.
ReplyDeleteThe
ReplyDeletemore I think of BATB, the more I think that it will definitely get cancelled.
Its ratings as of this week (2/8/13) was below The Carrie Diaries and on par of Hart of Dixie without
any significant lead-in. Unless Cult does terrible and/or TCD sees a dramatic
decrease in ratings, don’t expect this to come back).
I agree. Plus, it's no point of moving it to like Fridays and lead off with Grimm. NBC, if you are reading this, DNH fell 22% from last week and its ratings make The Mob Doctor look like a hit.
ReplyDeleteYou're wrong
ReplyDeleteSome people are saying that the show was pre empted in some states, so let's hope that helps, but I also believe that many people didn't watch this episode because they didn't like the idea of watching Alex and Vincent together.
ReplyDeleteFirst, yes they are the exact same... Penny is in the same place she was four years ago, same for Raj and Leonard... The only advance Sheldon had in the past six years is saying he might end up having sex with someone(Last week!)...
ReplyDeleteYes, i watch it... The show is still funny(athough now almost all the jokes are about sex :S )... But the thing is that I'm from Argentina, so the only way to watch the shows is from torrents, so i can watch all the shows i want, no matter the ratings... If i lived in America, i will definetly watch Community instead of TBBT...
Just watch a Season 2 episode and then see the parts of Penny/Leonard, Raj, or Leonard/Sheldon from now... They are exactly the same... The characters didn't grow... TBBT is starting to be like The Mentalist on "character development", on the CBS drama i didn't see any character development... The same goes to a show like Supernatural, they are always playing the same scenarios because IT WORKED... Is that bad? No, but for me it didn't do it... I need a progression on the characters... Since we are talking about Community, the character of Jeff Winger is a very good example of how a character needs to be developed... Even a freshman show like Elementary is doing a really great job with that...
It's all about my point of view... I search for something when i watch a show and other people look out for something different... Finally, we must adress that the comedy of COMMUNITY is diferent. I don't want to say "Smarter Comedy", but it's more complicated than Leonard and Sheldon having a conflict(again...) over the Roomate Agreament... Which actually led to nothing, cause i believe on the next episode it's not gonna be adressed again and everything is gonna be fine(I believe next episode is the one with the proposal...).
Woah Community and Parks are actually do well for NBC comedies.
ReplyDeleteYay for Community! That's awesome.
ReplyDeleteAnd Do No Harm is deader than dead at this point. Waiting any minute now for the cancellation news.
Yay for POI,
ReplyDeleteMr. Berman basis all of his success/fail opinions as if all the networks were equal. That's not the case. Community and Parks and Recreation both had a really great night...for NBC! P&R is the top rated comedy on NBC other than the departing The Office. Since P&R has risen for the past two weeks it should be in the winners column but Mr. Berman uses a different scorecard than most.
ReplyDeleteOh so happy for Scandal. This show truly deserves everything. It's Shonda's masterpiece. Far better than Greys and I'm not referring to the early days, meaning season 1-3. POI also doing great which is amazing and yay for Parks & Rec!
ReplyDeleteMarc Berman makes me crazy. Elementary is doing awesomely for a freshman drama in that slot. 10pm on CBS has always been a bit of an underperformer from its lead-in and given the disparity in the past (CSI to, well, anything) it's a barnburner. ABC has always been stronger in that timeslot. He makes these passive-aggressive digs at shows he doesn't favor. Scandal did slightly better in the demo, but Elementary is outpacing it in viewers by a wide margin, yet he calls Scandal the hot ticket as if Elementary isn't a success story. All the new shows with the buzz and this one is trouncing all of them.
ReplyDeleteIt might be safe and I'm sure Fox will renew it, but numbers don't lie: Glee has been doing worse than last year's The Finder for at least two weeks now.
ReplyDeleteyes but ratings decrease year on year anyway and FOX is down across the board. Glee is doing good enough for a renewal ratings wise and lets not forget that it is in fact a cash cow.
ReplyDeleteyes, ive heard bad weather and a basketball game going on.
ReplyDeleteWell, is the CW, we never know its not only about the ratings anymore, but everything combined is the show in 4th place there are worst shows that are doing worst than this.
ReplyDeleteFigured Community's ratings wouldn't return to amazing numbers, but if it stays constant while other shows drop off like rocks (since Parks & Rec and Go On are pretty much the only other good NBC shows), then it has a chance of sticking around.
ReplyDeleteWhat Community (and Parks to a lesser degree) have that the other shows don't is consistent ratings because of a very loyal, very vocal fan base. While the ratings aren't that good, they at least stay constant while other shows just continue to drop and drop. Plus, NBC does like nothing to advertise Community and promotes the hell out of their "bigger shows" that lose ratings (look at Smash) so that helps too.
ReplyDeletethe thing is, what really matter is the demo and its what CBS will look at when they decide to renew the show , not the number of viewers, you know this...2.3 it was a good rating and the show is keeping it stable. And i hope it will keeping doing well, coz the show deserves to be on tv for a long time..
ReplyDeleteI don't have much experience in ratings like everybody else. Thanks for the input.
ReplyDeleteWrong about what? Glee getting renewed or season 5 being its final?
ReplyDeletewhen a show is pre empted it is likely to adjust down not up
ReplyDeleteUghhh you people just start watching Beauty and the Beast already (People in the states who can actually make a difference to the ratings) it's a Great show.Come On!!
ReplyDeleteI only watched TBBT's season 1 and that was because i had no other show than.I don't get the jokes at all and i stick to what i always say about TBBT is that it's highly overrated, except from Jim Parson's acting there's nothing to the show.
ReplyDeleteWhile community may not be the kinda comedy like HIMYM and 2 broke girls and new girl that will make you laugh hard every episode, but it's a different kinda comedy where there's no laughing sound of people every time they make a joke even if it's not funny. It is more complicated sort of comedy and it takes some time to like it and get used to it but once you do you'll appreciate it highly and will enjoy it.
That's why it kept getting renewed, it stayed steady while other shows flopped. It should get another season.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, Grey's is dull with the hospital storyline and the interns aren't interesting enough to carry the show now that they've become more and more prominent.
ReplyDeleteWell, now that the ratings come up... Community did ok... Last Season Finale got a 1.3 Demo, so a 1.8 is hell of an improvement! :D
ReplyDeleteLet's hope it stay there!!!
Actually, just looking at your comment about BATB it looks like you have
ReplyDeleteYes it is, its a shame people are missing it.
ReplyDeleteI wish online watching and downloading would count in in the ratings as well.Than i bet it would be like 2.0 something.
ReplyDeleteI really don't like this guy O.o
ReplyDelete
