----------
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Tuesday 2/07/12:
NBC and CW: no change, CBS: - 2, ABC: - 4, Fox: -45
----------
-Winners:
NCIS (CBS), NCIS: Los Angeles (CBS), The Bachelor (ABC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
Raising Hope (Fox), Hart of Dixie (CW), Smash (NBC), The Mindy Project (Fox), Emily Owens, M.D. (CW)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown:
It was another clean overnight Tuesday sweep for CBS courtesy of NCIS (13.4 rating/21 share), NCIS: Los Angeles (10.0/16) and Vegas (6.6/11), which is not expected to win the 10 p.m. hour among adults 18-49 opposite the second hour of The Bachelor on ABC. Casting note: Edward Hodge (Red Dawn) is the first to be signed for the proposed NCIS: Los Angeles spin-off, which will follow a mobile team of agents who work together as they travel the country solving crimes. It will air in a backdoor pilot episode on NCIS: Los Angeles later this season.
In sophomore season-premiere news, two-hours of Smash on NBC, featuring Jennifer Hudson, opened with an uneventful 3.7/ 6 in the overnights from 9-11 p.m. Comparably, this was NBC's top rating in the time period since the fall season-finale of The Voice on December 18. But it was also, however, 53 percent below the one-hour series-opener (7.8/13 on Monday 2/06/12 at 10 p.m. out of The Voice). And Smash dropped in household rating in each of the four half-hours (4.1/ 6 – 3.7/ 6 – 3.6/ 6 – 3.4/ 6). While you have to commend NBC for an ambitious scripted entry like Smash, this is not the type of series, unfortunately, that will ever attract a mass audience.
Earlier in the evening on NBC Betty White’s 2nd Annual 90th Birthday Special at a second-place 4.3/ 7 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m.
Over at ABC, week three of cooking competition The Taste perked up to a 3.9/ 6 in the 8 p.m. hour, which was eight percent above one week earlier (three week overnight track: 4.7/ 7 – 3.6/ 6 – 3.9/ 6). Keep in mind that the 3.6/ 6 in the overnights last week translated into 4.80 million viewers and a 1.6/ 4 among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day results. In other words: not great/not terrible.
Next on the alphabet net was a Tuesday edition of The Bachelor at a competitive (and second place) 5.6/ 9 from 9-11 p.m., which was a notable improvement from the regularly scheduled line-up.
Elsewhere, two episodes of the sitcom more people should be watching, Raising Hope, only mustered a 2.5/ 4 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m. (8 p.m.: #4, 2.6/ 4; 8:30 p.m.: #4, 2.4/ 4). If you were a fan of underrated 2000-06 CBS sitcom Yes, Dear (and I certainly was), you might have noticed the cameo appearances by Mike O’Malley and Liza Snyder as Jimmy and Christine Hughes. It looks like Jimmy and Christine finally got their own place!
Next on Fox was demo friendly New Girl at a fourth-place 3.4/ 5 in the overnights at 9 p.m., which was 42 percent above the 8:30 p.m. edition of Raising Hope. At 9:30 p.m., freshman The Mindy Project sunk to a 2.3/ 4, which dipped by 32 percent from New Girl.
In series-finale news, drama Emily Owens, M.D. earned its cancellation with a 1.1/ 2 in the overnights at 9 p.m. Comparably, that was equal to lead-in Hart of Dixie, which is not capable of anchoring the evening.
In late night: David Letterman on CBS (2.6/ 7 from 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m.) led in the overnights once again, narrowly beating competing The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on NBC (2.5/ 6). Comparably, both declined from the year-ago evening, with Letterman down 13 percent and Leno down 11 percent. Relocated Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC finished third with a 2.2/ 6, which continues to slip from year-ago occupant Nightline (down 19 percent in the 11:30 p.m. half-hour: 2.6/ 6 vs. 3.2/ 8). But the improved young demo delivery for Kimmel makes moving up one half-hour a smart move financially.
Older skewing Nightline followed on ABC with a third-place 1.3/ 4 at 12:30 a.m. Craig Ferguson on CBS and Jimmy Fallon on NBC tied with a 1.3/ 4 in the overnights from 12:30-1:30 a.m. (each down marginally from the year-ago evening), with Last Call With Carson Daly on NBC at a 0.7/ 3 at 1:30 a.m.

If Smash had the best numbers sense the voice does that mean for its first hour or it's second.
ReplyDeleteI think they're talking about the time slot, but it kept dropping in each half hour.
ReplyDeleteHa,Betty White did better than Smash, that's saying a whole lot!
ReplyDeleteSmash is DOA
ReplyDeleteNCIS is unstoppable! Yeeeh!
ReplyDeleteOMG! Those numbers for Smash are unbelievable. Spectacular failure.
ReplyDeleteThat sucks for SMASH I guess all the hype didn't bring in the ratings. :( I personally loved the episode!
ReplyDeleteOmg Poor Smash :(
ReplyDeleteCloris Leachman kicked Betty White's ass, yay (by 0.1, but still, what an ass kicking) !
ReplyDeleteAlso, when you see the numbers NBC has been getting for its première episodes these past few days (0.9 on A18-49 for Do No Harm, 1.1 for Smash), Community will look like a freaking blockbuster if it comes back at, say, 1.7/1.8 (I'm hoping at least that, and then it stabilizes around 1.5 and it gets renewed for 2 more seasons, and a movie, and I get €1 million in the mail).
Agree so much about Raising Hope! S2 had some rough patches but S3 is back to the quality of S1 and it makes me laugh so hard.
ReplyDeleteWow I'm guessing NBC are going to regret giving Smash a second season, they seemed to have put a lot of effort into retooling the show and promoting it but the reviews and now the ratings are pretty poor.
ReplyDeleteIronic that Emily Owens had more viewers than Hart of Dixie, but was the one cancelled.
