Today's Early Overnight Ratings

This table shows the early overnight ratings. These ratings are normally adjusted later in the day when all the ratings have been consolidated to take into account any local preemptions and/or overruns. You can find all the final adjusted numbers in our Ratings Database. (See the About section below for details about ratings)

Early Ratings Analysis

The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

For more information on the Nielsen Ratings see this Wikipedia Entry.

NOTE: The opinions expressed here are NOT those of SpoilerTV but of the Author of this Article, Marc Berman.

SUNDAY 2/17/13 Metered Markets

Household
Rating/Share
CBS 6.3/10
ABC 3.8/ 6
NBC 3.0/ 5
Fox 2.3/ 4

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Sunday 2/19/12:
CBS and Fox: -12 each, ABC: -21, NBC: -30

----------

-Honorable Mention:
60 Minutes (CBS), The Amazing Race (CBS), The Good Wife (CBS), The Mentalist (CBS)

-Losers:
The Cleveland Show (Fox)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS finished first in the overnights in each of the eight half-hours on this below-average Sunday with its combination of granddaddy 60 Minutes (7.0 rating/12 share), the winter season-premiere of The Amazing Race (6.1/10), The Good Wife (6.1/ 9) and The Mentalist (6.2/11), which has not benefited since moving from Thursday. Comparatively, The Amazing Race slipped by nine percent from its year-ago season-opener (6.7/10 on 2/19/12, which translated into 10.34 million viewers and a 2.8 rating/7 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data). And the combination of The Good Wife and The Mentalist are, of course, expected to skew older.

To strengthen the evening next season, CBS may want to consider moving either moving NCIS: Los Angeles to Sunday and pairing the proposed new spin-off with NCIS on Tuesday, or positioning the spin-off on Sunday. Stay tuned.

In the distant No. 2 spot last night was ABC with its line-up of America’s Funniest Home Videos (#3: 3.9/ 7), Once Upon a Time (#2: 4.9/ 8), Revenge (#2: 4.4/ 7) and an encore of the pilot episode of Zero Hero, which did not gain many extra eyeballs with a mere 2.1/ 4 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Like The Mentalist, Revenge has suffered ratings erosion since moving to Sunday.

Next was NBC, which led out of Dateline at 7 p.m. (#2: 4.0/ 7) with encores of Betty White’s Off Their Rockers (two episodes: #3t, avg. 2.6/ 4 from 8-9 p.m.) and two-hour special Saturday Night Live in the 90s: Pop Culture Nation (2.7/ 5 from 9-11 p.m.).

Fox, which of course cannot be adequately judged by the overnights, featured an encore of The Simpsons at 7 p.m. (#4: 1.5/ 3), followed by the regularly scheduled animated line-up of The Cleveland Show (#4: 1.8/ 3), The Simpsons (#3: 2.8/ 4), Bob’s Burgers (#4: 2.3/ 3), Family Guy (#3: 3.0/ 5) and American Dad (#4: 2.5/ 4). Worth positively noting for Family Guy was overnight growth of 30 percent out of Bob’s Burgers (which will, of course, translate well among adults 18-49).

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) we post the TV Ratings for the previous night.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)

  2. Thanks @disqus_PMz17RgD46:disqus hopefully it will make it easier for people new to ratings to understand.

  3. I think it's a good thing to point that Berman doesn't appraise the 14-49 numbers although these numbers really count.

  4. Great new layout indeed, well done!

If I may give one suggestion I think you should also find a way to include women 18-34 ratings for shows that air on the CW since that's the demo CW advertisers are said to be after; and I often see commentors judging how good/bad a CW show is doing just by looking at adults 18-49 without taking into consideration that's not The CW priority.
TheFutonCritic has the women 18-34 rating for CW shows usually around 5-6 GMT.

  5. Thanks, glad you like it.

I'm afraid our database and spreadsheet generators are not geared up for the 18-34 women ratings. It would take an awful lot of programming work to get this built in and it's something we simply don't have the time/resources to do currently. I'll add it to our ideas list but it's unlikely to be done this year.

  6. It's ok, it was just a suggestion! Keep up the awesome job you're doing with the site. :)

  10. You had me scratching my head wondering,lol.... :)

  11. Only 2.3 for OUAT, nooo! I hate ABC with its scheduling, look at what he did to the shows!! So afraid for revenge now! Damn you abc

Ouch. After all the media hype about this episode I expected OUAT to do better.

  14. It looks like every show this Sunday loose their viewers and ratings...
And again, thank you CBS for the lack of promotion for The Mentalist.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hour Zero did well after, between the season premiere and this rerun...

    ReplyDelete
  16. Good going OAUT! Seems the atrocious writing is reflecting in it's ratings, hopefully the showrunners will get the hint.

  17. Yeah, but at the very least they're both getting renewed, besides Grey's Anatomy and Scandal, their other shows aren't doing that much better. Zero Hour is a flop and I don't see Red Widow being a huge hit, especially being in a death slot. It's troubling next season if they continue to decline.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah, me too. I guess it was a strange sunday because no show on the networks did very well. The best 18-49 demo is 2.4. OUAT has 2.3.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Who would have thought this would happen?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Not too hard to see this coming really, the writing has been on and off all season. Ever since ''The Doctor'' there has been a steady decline. But ''Queen of Hearts'' really cemented that the writers have lost their touch. Hell, I even wrote an article about back then!

There are still enjoyable moments in each episode and I keep watching because it is one of the few genre shows still out there. I just wish they wouldn't take their fans for granted. :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. That made me see you in my mind looking like a cute monkey scratching her head. ;)

  22. Wow I'm surprised! For once something predictable happened, you would think those that were hoping they were right would be happy about it?! I thought it was appealing on lots of levels and gave the story the edge it needs to finish the season and it gave some of the reins back to Emma! We have fans that feel the beginning of the season is a mess (where I think they have to take the time to set up other certain things for the end of the season and season 3) and inconsistent making some of it seem random and unpredictable and then we have fans that knew that Neal was Bae and are disappointed by the predictability!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I wish it would focus more on actual fairy tale elements rather than trying to make almost all of the characters interrelated.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah, there seems to be a mixed reaction about the show.

  25. I didn't see this coming at the end of last season, but except as you stated this season has been a let down for me..Maybe i'm going thru a mid life crises i'm finding little joy this tv season :P
