I really liked the first season. I liked seeing how all the different stories fit together by the end of the episode. I hate how they've re-tooled the whole show. They have some great new cast members, but I doubt I'm going to continue to watch...
I find that really surprising, because this is a million times better than the first season in my, and many others, eyes. From what I'm reading the critical and fan reception to this premiere has been great, and even those who had issues with the first season are tuning in. It's much improved, and that's coming from someone who loved the 1st season as well.
Maria B. is a great addition. I loved the Lucy and Jake interactions, just really sweet. I didn't see the Soleil thing being connected to Frances. I thought Jake was wanting to reach out to humanity. But it felt off and I had been spoiler free for this show, so I didn't know it was getting a retool. The next few weeks will tell me whether or not I like the retool but as long as I get a weekly Maria B. fix I think I can power through, tbh.
Much improved on the first season. More purpose, more urgency and some really interesting new characters. Plus it seems this season will be completely mythology based, which is great. I liked the 1st season, but this is much better.
OK, first of all, FOX, I hate you. The intro used to be good, now it's rubbish. Second, is this becoming 24 cast reunion show? Greg Ellis, Lukas Haas, John Boyd. So many.
Thirdly, I recognise a hell of a lot of locations from NCIS: LA and 24. Rather interesting. Fourth, I pretty much hate the fact that I watched this. Ep was awesome, both of them were. But Sky 1 in the UK aren't showing this until April, and there is no way in hell that I'm gonna wait that long to watch ep 3 and beyond. So there's another show I will be watching every week. I'm never gonna be able to keep up...
I don't find it at all surprising, as I too found this new season got off to a pretty disappointing start. putting th e"mythology" (such as it is) front and centre merely plays up how fundamentally dumb the concept really is. At least when there was a mystery of the week to solve, that was relatively easy to overlook. And why bother bringing in someone of Maria Bello's calibre if, basically, every time she tries to do something Jack Bau--sorry, Martin Baum--is going to tell her to calm down, relax, let him handle it? On the plus side, at least the kid didn't run away too many times.
I like the previous episode "Event Horizon", but "Closer" is better to connect the storyline of Martin, Jake and Lucy with the new character, and see how close they are to rescue Amelia make crazy to see the next episode and the rest of the season.
Plus: The chemistry between Kiefer Sutherland and Maria Bello is great, like the chemistry between her character and Jake.
Plus 2: Who is the creepy guy, he kill two people and is a huge threat for Martin and Jake.
Well you're entitled to your opinion, but many feel that the 'mystery of the week' schtick wore thin come the end of the season...and it did! It became the same. Every. Single Week. Don't get me wrong, I loved season 1, but after a great start it really got to the point where I could see where the writers were going from the get go. This way is much more interesting, it could go any way. And most importantly, it still keeps the shows heart.
There were problems with the format, I'll grant you, not least of which were the plausibility problems of how Martin could possibly make a living, and the frequency with which the plot depended on him--YET AGAIN--having the kid run away from him. (I considered starting a drinking game premised on this; take a shot every time Martin once again apparently forgets that the kid will wander off at the drop of ahat and turns his back on him or leaves him unattended somewhere. However, I figured I'd end up plastered at the end of every episode.) Or, to put it another way, the first season was no particular great shakes. I don't really see the new season as much of an improvement. For one thing, the problem of how Martin can make a living still needs to be addressed, though with a multi-billionaire new character that can be rectified easily enough, I guess. Not to mention, apparently, an entire independent online newsroom to funtnio as his CTU--sorry command centre. Furthermore, Maria Bello seems to have been brought on board merely to babysit (Indeed, I've heard already that she'll be leaving the show befre the season is out; based on what she's got to do so far, I can't blame her.). And, more significantly, with the mythology taking front and centre, the show's basic problem also comes to the fore: the concept is nonsense. The kid can see patterns in numbers, eh? Just not ones that actually lead where you want to go, it would seem. And what exactly does that even mean, anyway? Early on, they seemed to have some sort of quasi-SFnal rationale for it; now, it just seems like a fantasy device.
Just watched and am very much enjoying the "retool" that some have embraced and others not so much. I liked how this incorporated some of the old "threads of the week", but tightening them into more of the current storyline/mythology. I'm still not sure about the assassin character/storyline - who seems to be something of a zealot who is removing those from the path who do not want to wholeheartedly embrace it, but I guess we shall see how that will develop. I've read that the ratings haven't been so great so I hope that they will rebound and stabilize.
Sadly, the viewing numbers don't support your theory that the majority are liking this version better. I'm glad that you are, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the season.
I don't remember if it was in this episode, or the pilot, but whoever's in charge of translating and hiring actors that can speak languages other than english is an arsehole. "ámaras a díos por sobre todas las cosas"? Was that supposed to be spanish? The accents on the "amarás" and "dios". Also, the english subtitle said "you shall not love another god" (I believe), and that's not what the guy said in awful spanish. He said "you shall love God above all else". Spend a few bucks more, damn it.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

I enjoyed this show last year, I think this will be a great season!
