Ty Olsson Interview: Part 2

Borealis airs tonight on Space at 9pm EST and 6pm PST. You can see it tomorrow, Saturday, January 12 at 3pm PST. Space will also be streaming Borealis for 2 weeks following the broadcast. Unfortunately, because Space is a Canadian broadcaster, it will only be available in Canada. Ty, however, is having a contest on Twitter - @TyOlsson – for the person who makes Borealis more widely available!

Here is a bit more information from Ty about Borealis and some more great shots of what and who you will see when you tune in to watch!

Ty Olsson: Well, the cast of Borealis was one of those rare times when a group of people clicks so well together that it really does become your second family in such a short time. A year after shooting the pilot we still talk regularly. Which is way more unusual then people may think. After we finished shooting ... myself and two cast members went on vacation in Mexico together.  We have had dinners, weekends in Whistler, British Columbia, and been in contact ever since. When we were all in Calgary together, it was immediately a bond that I think we'll have forever. I've been doing this a long time, been on a lot of shows, and I’ve never been on one as tight as this :) I think the producers worried they'd be bailing all of us outta jail some weekends. But we would have all been in there together.  I think that bond shows in the filming of Borealis. It was truly “our show, our town”.

I remember cast member Michelle Harrison was scheduled to be shot out almost a week before the wrap of the show. It became all of our covert goals to find away to keep her in Calgary till the end of shooting. From pulling in favors to trying to squeeze her into other scenes making it “imperative for continuity,” we had to finish the show together .

My character, Vic Carboneau was a former ultimate fighter, and this plays a integral part to Vic’s back story and his own demons ...having died in the ring before modern science revived him. Our last day of shooting ended in a 7 hour cage fight scene: 7 hours, 2 fighters ... Myself and Darren Shahlavi. One set, us two in every take. When you’re shooting a big scene like that, you can't let your body cool down or it will shut down, so I would skip, do push ups, jumping jacks, poomse's (a Tae Kwon do pattern or form) between takes to keep my body warm . Then the fight choreography itself : 7 hours!! The fight is epic!!! The choreography is sooo cool: 7 hours!!  A 15 minute actual MMA fight would have hurt less!!  I literally felt like I had been savagely beaten!!
