Thrilled to be able to talk about Supernatural in such an overwhelmingly positive manner again. It's the first time since season 7 and in a way it felt like coming home. This was the episode I sorely needed.
ReplyDeleteI kinda feel like the whole first half of the season has been a complete waste of time for several reasons
ReplyDelete1-it took 10 episodes for the writers to reveal the angel tablet, so many fans were already talking about that before the season even started.
2-Sam's flashbacks didnt really tell us anything about Sam and had the end most of predicted but hoped Jeremy Carver would give us.
3-Benny was always going to fall off the wagon and need putting down. I have no doubt that at some point later in the season he will either be killed oor take his own life. Either way he will be gone and Dean will no doubt spend many an episode feeling guilty about it.
4-the brothers arguening for no real reason, we've just had 10 episodes of them at odds with each other then 1 episode of them moving on with no real discussion or resolution of the problems they had in the first place. Sam is all in on the hunt now (though aparently him not being all in means he never makes contact with Amelia nor does it affect his ability to hunt at all) and Dean's ok with Sam now because Sam isnt going anywhere at the end of the series it seems. Next week they'll be back to normal like none of the first half of the season tension ever even happened.
A few other things-
-Kevin is a bit slow
-his mom is annoying
-Crowley is a bit slow and has aparently lost his snark
-the angels are up to something again and it probably is something that has the good of mankind in mind again
-Meg has dissapeared off the face of the earth no doub she'll be back to flirt with Cas at some random point
-Jeremy Carvers explanation for Sam not looking for Dean has been literally ripped to shreds since that spoiler was released in the summer. Unless theres something we dont know yet that is a massive fail.
-theres been way too much fanwank when it comes to Sam's storyline, it has been poorly written, given very little Sam POV and has lacked adequate dialogue.
-Jeremy Carver told us that the reveal of who was stood outside Amelia and Sam's place in the season preimer would happen in episode 10, did I miss something or was the mysterious figure just Don?
-did the angels bring back Don and tell Benny how to get Dean out of Purgatory to get the Winchester back in the game? What happened to the boys being pro-active JC? So far it feels like they're pawns in an angel/demon war again, that is when they're actually involved in the main storyline rather than just arguing.
LARP was a decent episode as a stand alone, I expected there to be a throw away episode after the heavy ones we've had off the back of the fist half of the season. I also expected it to be Dean centric/heavy. I would say I hope we get a similar Sam centric episode in the coming weeks where he shares some feelings with a guest star but thats highly unlikely. Sam is back in hunter mode now I think thats the last we've seen or heard of his storyline for the rest of the season. In the grand scheme of things I felt like it was just pointless and I guess just way too easy. Also I like Charlie sometimes, mainly when she isnt a walking cliche and the female version of Dean. I thought her story was quite similar to Sam's and that the writers missed an opetunity to have Sam talk to Charlie about stuff. But oh well thats all over and done with now, like I said Sam will no doubt be back to himself next week.
Well, I'll disagree with most of that and that's fine. There are a lot of questions though. I liked the season. I believe the boys did have reasons to argue...especially Dean. I like how they finally settled things. LARP made me feel good about them...especially Sam. Dean was trying. Sam finally relented.and I like that. But I never disliked the first part of the season. I didn't like the brothers being as they are and I didn't like the fandom taking sides and trying to find fault, but I did like the show.
ReplyDeleteDont get me wrong there is some good stuff from the fist half of the season, I dont mind the brothers fighting. In fact I like it more than when they're just plodding along with each other. I just think the writing has left me feeling like there was no real point/end purpose to what we've been shown so far. I literally could have wrapped a lot of the fist 10 episodes in 1 or 2 episodes. For me while I get LARP was supposed to just be fun and was trying to show the brothers moveing on I felt it was just too quick and too easy. Its unlikely there will be any more tension or any further fall reference to all the issues they had with each other other than the Benny issue which still needs to be settled.
ReplyDeleteI am pleased with one thing this season so far and that is that Sam is no longer taking crap from Dean, he's finally just coming out and saying it, he's biting back. I've felt that he's been too quiet for too long. Sam's issues with Dean feel organic but I fear that there will be no further exploration and no real resolution.
Dean issue with Sam has been settled, Sam is no longer chasing a life away from hunting. There is the issue of Dean thinking Benny is a better brother and his words under the influence of the coin but again I dont see them being revisited outside of Benny falling off the wagon and having to be put down making him the not better brother and thus ending that whole arguement.
I just dont know where this is all going, will the brothers just be back to normal now? Also I'm confused as to what Sam's role in the rest of the season is supposed to be. According to spoilers and speculation Dean has an upcoming role to play in the myth arc regarding the 3 tasks that Kevin reveals from the tablet. Dean has the whole Benny thing to resolve, he has Cas stuff, he has a love interest even for just one episode. Sam doesnt appear to have anything going on at all now that the whole Amelia storyline is dead.
I agree with everything you said.I am underwhelmed with this season so far and very annoyed with how Sam is being written. So far the season is a write-off. Earlier they said Dean would betray Sam in some way and it would be the equivalent of Sam not looking for Dean. Well a text message is not equivalent, not that I wanted Dean to do anything against Sam. I want them working together. But more than anything, I want a believable explanation of why Sam didn't look. So far they have not managed that.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you jensenfan.
ReplyDeleteSo far I like season 8 much more then I did season 6 and 7 and can't wait for more episodes. As for the fandom, I more or less ignored it from 2005 until 2011, and with the constant "everybody has an opinion but don't you dare to speak yours" wars and taking sides with one or the other brother the fandom has be become boring and redundant to me.
Still like the show, and will continue to watch. :)
