-Ratings Breakdown:
The two-hour season-premiere of American Idol with new judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban led Fox to Wednesday overnight victory, as expected, with an 11.7 rating/18 share from 8-10 p.m. But compared to the year-ago season-opener (13.5/21 on Wednesday 1/18/12), this was a decrease of 13 percent. And that 13.5 rating one year earlier was actually down by 18 percent from the 16.4/24 in the overnights for the 2011 season-premiere (on 1/19/11). So, the slow erosion is expected to continue this season despite the new panel of judges.

Keep in mind that the year-ago American Idol season-opener averaged 21.93 million viewers and a 7.4 rating/19 share among adults 18-49 (according to the fast affiliate results from Nielsen).

As for the new judges, not even Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj can hide the fact that the format of American Idol is just plain tired. Click on the following to tell us what you think: http://tinyurl.com/adorfec.

On runner-up CBS, a repeat of NCIS opened the evening second in the overnights with a 5.4/ 9 at 8 p.m. Next was old faithful Criminal Minds with a second-place 8.2/13 from 9-10 p.m., which was on par with one year earlier, followed by the forensics crime solver that keeps on ticking, CSI, at a dominant 7.4/12 at 10 p.m. The next season of Survivor, Fans vs. Favorites, opens on CBS on February 13 from 8-10 p.m.

Over at ABC, Modern Family was the standout, of course, with a third-place 7.8/12 in the overnights at 9 p.m., which built from lead-in The Neighbors (#3: 4.1/ 6 at 8:30 p.m.) by a hefty 90 percent. Comparably, this could top competing American Idol among adults 18-49. Stay tuned.

Elsewhere on ABC was underrated The Middle at a second-place 5.6/ 9 at 8 p.m., with Modern Family lead-out Suburgatory at a third-place 4.3/ 7 at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, retention for Suburgatory out of Modern Family was weak (and typical for the time period) at 55 percent. Nashville capped off the evening for the alphabet net with a second-place 4.5/ 8 at 10 p.m., which was 17 percent below year-ago occupant Revenge (5.4/ 8 on 1/18/12). Considering the critical acclaim for Nashville, ABC would have been wise to feature a session at the Winter Press Tour on the freshman drama (instead of, perhaps, returning Body of Proof, which was a real snore).

NBC avoided the American Idol season-premiere by filling the night with repeats of sitcoms Whitney (#4: 1.8/ 3) and Guys With Kids (#4: 1.7/ 3) from 8-9 p.m., and Dick Wolf dramas Law & Order: SVU (#4: 2.1/ 3) and compatible Chicago Fire (#3: 2.7/ 5) from 9-11 p.m. The CW, meanwhile, remained on the double-digit year-to-year plus side care of bona fide hit Arrow (#5: 2.3/ 4) and relocated Supernatural (#5: 1.6/ 2). Year-to-year, Arrow built by 77 percent from the 1.3/ 4 for former time period occupant One Tree Hill. See you next season…and beyond…Arrow.
