CBS led this second Wednesday in January with its combination of ongoing special I Get That A Lot (#2: 5.0 rating/8 share at 8 p.m.) and The 39th Annual People’s Choice Awards, which averaged a 7.3/11 from 9-11 p.m. Comparably, The People’s Choice Awards built by 14 percent from the year-ago telecast (6.4/10 on 1/11/12), with a first-place finish from 9:30-11 p.m. For a full listing of the winners for television, click on the following: http://tinyurl.com/b2hx3f3.
The standout on second-place ABC, of course, was Modern Family, which topped the night in the overnights with an 8.6/13 at 9 p.m. Comparably, Modern Family built from lead-in The Neighbors (#2: 4.8/ 8 at 8:30 p.m.) by a hefty 79 percent and it led into a third-place 5.0/ 8 for Suburgatory at 9:30 p.m. Mirroring former time period occupants Happy Endings, Cougar Town and Mr. Sunshine, nothing can hold the lead-in support from Modern Family.
At 10 p.m., ABC drama Nashville finished third with a 4.4/ 7, which was 21 percent below year-ago occupant Revenge (5.6/ 9 on 1/11/12). Earlier in the evening on ABC was underrated sitcom The Middle at a dominant 6.2/10 at 8 p.m.
Third overall for the evening was NBC with its line-up of sitcoms Whitney (#3: 3.0/ 5) and Guys With Kids (#3: 2.8/ 5), Law & Order: SVU (#2: 5.7/ 9) and compatible Chicago Fire (#2: 5.5/10), which looks like a shoo-in for a second season renewal. Comparably, struggling Whitney and Guys With Kids dipped by an average 35 percent from year-ago occupants Whitney (4.4/ 7) and the debut of short-lived Are You There, Chelsea? (4.6/ 7). Both Law & Order: SVU and Chicago Fire rose to season highs.
On Fox, two-hour special Stars in Danger: The High Dive was a bust at a 2.3/ 4 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. And The CW closed the night with repeats of Arrow (#5: 1.3/ 2) and Supernatural (#5: 0.9/ 1).
