I've had an amazing experience as showrunner for S3 @walkingdead_amc but it's time to move on. Thank you to all the fans for their support.

Joint Statement from AMC and Glen Mazzara:
Today, AMC announces the season 4 pick-up of The Walking Dead.
AMC also jointly announces with Glen Mazzara today that for future seasons, the two parties have mutually decided to part ways. Glen guided the series creatively for seasons 2 and 3. AMC is grateful for his hard work. We are both proud of our shared success.
Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward, and conclude that it is best to part ways. This decision is amicable and Glen will remain on for post-production on season 3B as showrunner and executive producer.

Yes! I was wondering when this was coming!
ReplyDeletebut why ? :(
ReplyDeleteI don't get it,
ReplyDeleteGlen did a great job so far and they want to cut him off ?
Cool!I started watching it a couple of weeks ago and I just began season 3..
ReplyDeleteSuch an awesome show!
So the geniuses at AMC think that they know better than the showrunner who saw The Walking Dead become the highest rated scripted show in cable history during his tenure? I swear that AMC is determined to throw gasoline on their cash cow and light a match.
ReplyDeleteI hate that they never tell us why
ReplyDeleteIs there any information how many episodes will be in season 4?
ReplyDeleteNothing yet. If we hear anything we'll be sure to post.
ReplyDeleteAMC themselves said that they and Mazzara had differing opinions about how the show should go forward next season. They probably want to make it more mainstream and 'safe', as well as try to add in more product placement like they did with Breaking Bad.
ReplyDeleteWell, it´s good and bad.
ReplyDeleteBad because we don´t know who will come in and what it will be like then.
Good because I didn´t like certain creative choices Glen made. Killing off Dale, making Rick sometimes really seem like an idiot because he´s so cold-blooded, or trying to make the show always about bad people in a bad world instead of trying to keep hope in a bad world what season 1 and season 2.1 was about.
It wont be more than 16 episodes, and will probaly stick on 16 episodes this time also. They cant make the season any bigger from what i have heard over the last year. It makes the show too expensive to make.
ReplyDeleteRumors are he left because AMC wants 22 episodes. And when you have the highest rated show on TV you can come up with the money for 6 additional episodes
ReplyDeleteMazzara didn't write Dale out. The actor wanted to leave the show after Kirkman left.
ReplyDeleteShawn Ryan @ShawnRyanTV
ReplyDeleteWith FX, Showtime, HBO, Starz, Cinemax, A&E, TNT and others to sell to, it's a real question now why good show runners should sell to AMC?
WTF is happening at AMC headquarters?
ReplyDeleteI hope it has nothing to do (again) with budget issues.
Why should he leave because of the number of episodes?
ReplyDeleteWhy do I get the feeling that AMC just has no clue what they're doing now that they've stumbled into a goldmine? Here's a hint guys...quit chasing away showrunners when their work has pushed the show to break every cable (and some broadcast) record there is out there... If it ain't broke don't fix it!
ReplyDeleteHe said in the showrunners meeting at the hollywood reporter that HE came up with the idea, told DeMunn and he was fine. Check it out yourself.
ReplyDeleteThat's strange. As I understood it, he wanted out because Darabont left.
ReplyDeleteI thought DeMunn wanted out as well. Hmmm..
ReplyDeleteAMC should put Kirkman as the showrunner cause he's the one that knows the storylines of the comics and could give us the best scenes for the show.....im just hoping nobody else leaves with Mazzara thats been great on the show...☺....
ReplyDeleteMaybe AMC are a bunch of The Walking Dead purists and want it told super-closely to the original source. Comic book SPOILERS ahead - the Dale question
ReplyDeleteIIRC, Mr. DeMunn did want out, told that to the writers, they wrote him off then he had a change of heart but it was too late--'Dale' died. If Jeff DeMunn was leaving due to the Darabont fallout, I think they should have recast him, not kill him. He's important to several other important character's story arcs. For a time Dale was a key character/part of the overall arc of the comic book world of the Walking Dead, but he exited prematurely on the TV show. Many readers seem to like the comic book character--though he met a very bad end. He outlives Hershel in the comics, I believe. I do really like Scott Wilson's TV Hershel--i suppose no more than one old guy in the Grimes' group at a time?.
If Greg Nicotero leaves, we are sunk. probably the same results to some degree if Kirkman exits. I'm hoping this is Nicotero co-helming the show with Robert Kirkman. I'm probably wrong as it's a wild guess--but with another yet to be-named person or not? So many questions!
ReplyDeleteWell, Mazzara says himself, he made the choice to write him out. Quote: "When I became showrunner I had already talked to the other writers about killing off Jeff DeMunn´s character ´cause I thought no one would see that and the idea killing off two main characters back to back...." and so on.
ReplyDeleteWhoever is next has some big shoes to fill, but I wonder if that person is already on staff like Glen was during Darabont's time. I wouldn't want it to be Kirkman though.
ReplyDeleteWHAT?! Why???
ReplyDeleteWhat's next? To kill off Carol and Daryl? How about pair up Rick with a 15 year old and give him Michonne's katana? Now, you truly entered mediocre territory.
ReplyDeleteyeah, ur right, cyn...we are sunk...especially if Kirkman leaves...then the show is DEAD... the show is based on his comics storyline....its too bad this has to happen just when the show is at its Highest Peek and on top of the TV World...lets hope the 4th season will be even Better then the last and nothing will change....☺.....
ReplyDeleteThey're probably going to severely cut back on the gore as well. I have a sense that AMC is the reason why the Governor is so tame and almost nothing like his comic book counterpart on the series. Nothing against David Morrissey, he's done a great job, but the character he plays is so far removed from the book, they may as well have introduced an entirely new person instead of trying to pass this guy off as "The Governor".
ReplyDeleteI couldn't see Kirkman as a showrunner. He has little experience with the TV business and he's already cranking on at least two monthly comic book series' as it is. We need someone who has the experience in dealing with the medium and TV execs and who isn't bogged down with another job. No part time showrunner will cut it.
ReplyDeleteIf he believes the quality would suffer from writing an additional 6 hours of TV.
