We only have 8 more songs to choose for our song-to-scene rankings. Tomorrow we will return to the best title contest so I can get the song-to-scene one ready. It's been more time consuming to find the videos than I expected. Best title should take 4 days and then we will jump back to song-to-scene. Sorry for the confusion but happy voting today!
Song-to-scene Contest Clarification:
At the risk of repeating myself, song-to-scene does NOT mean your favorite song. We just finished that one. It is NOT your favorite scene. We will do that contest in another hiatus. It is NOT the song you remember most. It is NOT the song that you had a gut reaction to the first time you saw the scene. In fact, the best song-to-scene may even be a song you hate in a scene you dislike. It is simply the song that best fits the particular scene it is in - lyrics and mood. If the song could be switched out for half a dozen other songs and still have had the same impact, it is NOT a good choice either. Hopefully that helps clarify what we are looking for here.

For these polls I have broken it down into great song-to-scene fit, good song-to-scene fit, mediocre, and "I can't believe this is in here" levels.
ReplyDeleteBest Song-to-Scene (ranking order)-
Bad Company - In all honesty this is the only one I think deserves to be in the contest of these choices. Meg slitting the guy's throat and then communicating with Azazel while Bad Company was playing was perfect. A top 8 choice out of all choices for sure.
Knight Rider Theme - This has no lyrics to match the scene but this is the only time we didn't need them. Everyone who grew up in the 80's knew what it meant by the third note.
Good Song-to-Scene (alpha order) -
Born to be Wild - Baby had her motor running. She has been on many highways. She's gone through many adventures and whatever the Winchesters had thrown her way. Most importantly she just got untarped after a way too long absence. Back in Black might be her theme song but this one fits too.
Highway to Hell - The scene was nothing special which is the only thing that keeps me from marking this great. It fits more as the theme song to season 1 than this particular scene, but part of a pilot's job is to set the foundation of what to expect for a show. Choosing to end with Highway to Hell let me know everything I needed about SPN.
You Shook Me All Night Long - This works well with half of the scene, not so much with the guy being dismembered.
Worst Song-to-Scene (alpha order) -
In-a-Gadda-da-Vida - I admit I cannot imagine this scene in Skin without this song but when you listen to the lyrics there is nothing to match this song with the scene.
Space Oddity - This gets on the worst list for the same reason as In-a-Gadda-da-Vida. Nothing in the lyrics matches the scene.
Spirit in the Sky - This could be any random song playing on the radio. Nothing ties this song to that scene except that I like the song better for having been associated with Good God Y'All
These Boots Were Made for Walking - I died laughing when this song came on and then to see it was Crowley. Still this goes on my top 10 bizarre song choices for Supernatural. Just strange.
White Rabbit - Yet another case where the song lyrics have nothing to do with what's on screen. That seems to be a theme here.

ReplyDeleteThe Knight Rider Theme - It fit perfectly. Sam/Impala as KITT. I laughed so hard because it fit the scene perfectly. You had to have lived during the times.
Born to Be Wild - Was the perfect ending with the beloved Impala was back and playing an important part. The fact that her engine was running and she was ready.
Highway to Hell is the history of the show in essence.
You Shook Me All Night Long was perfect for the sex scene, but the butchery was so out of place for the song. I kept it because of the sex scene.

I love that you're including your reasoning. lyrics are of a minor consideration to me in this contest. the sound of the music...given what's happening can be far more important, as is the case with In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida...the music enhances the scene. but, while I may occasionally disagree with you I love how your mind works.

ReplyDeleteI don't really care if lyrics are perfect for a scene, if when I hear the song at a later time and place the first thing I think about is Supernatural, then the song gets my vote. Does not mean the song is a favorite or even than I would go out and buy it...So saying that.

I don't think you can have a real song-to-scene match without the lyrics. To be honest, most of the time we think a song like In-a-Gadda-da-Vida is a perfect match simply because that is the song we first heard when we saw the scene. If another song had been in it, that would have been the perfect song. For me In-a-Gadda-da-Vida will always be a "Supernatural song" but that is mostly because I love the scene not because the music is a perfect match.
ReplyDeleteIf that were the criteria, for me almost every song would be the winner and I would be back to choosing them by which songs were my favorite or which scenes were. Whenever I hear about 85 of the 95+ songs nominated for song-to-scene, the first thing I think of is Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I think this would be a good contest for Fringe especially. Just be prepared to reiterate what song-to-scene means a lot. Most people just pick the song playing in a favorite scene or their favorite song.
ReplyDeleteIn my humble opinion the three absolute best song cues in supernatural have been Spirit in the Sky in in Good God, Ya'll; and two that werent mentioned (unless i missed them) Knocking on Heavens Door during the fireworks scene in Dark Side of the Moon; and Renegade at the end of Nightshifter. So for this poll, i guess yesterdays Spirit in the Sky wins for me.
ReplyDeleteI always though Do You Love Me in The End was great because it evoked that scene from Black Hawk Down, and Spirit in the Sky for Good God Yall just fit so well.
ReplyDeleteBoth Renegade and Knockin' on Heaven's Door are already in the contest based on their performance in the original nominations. This is just the the wildcard positions. I went from having a 16 item contest to a 32 item contest since there was so much discussion in this one and so this is to find the last 8 songs to make it into the contest.
ReplyDeleteHowever I am very curious as to why you think Spirit in the Sky is such a good fit. The other two make sense to me but the lyrics don't work for me at all with the scene in Good God Y'All. I like that scene. I'm good with that song. In fact the scene made me like the song better. I just don't see how it is a good song-to-scene fit when almost anything could have been playing on that car radio.
I find Do You Love Me to be a perfect fit for most sarcastic song of Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if that's just the fundamental difference in how different people approach things like this. I tend to react first and analyze later. It's one of the reasons that I watch most of my shows twice.

ReplyDeleteAs for Spirit in the Sky, it's more the instrumentation than the lyrics. It was a familiar song with that ominous echo that heightened the tension of that walk down the street. Reminded me of Clint Eastwood in The Good the Bad n the Ugly. Just great music to fit the slow walk with guns drawn.
I do the same thing and find that shows I just liked first time through, sometimes I LOVE the second time. Guess that is why I have watched SPN so many times, it just keeps getting better with watching.
