The favorite song contest has concluded and the winner is.....Carry on Wayward Son! Anyone shocked? I didn't think so. Not surprising that the #1 fan favorite song ever played on Supernatural is its de facto theme song. For most people this was by far the easiest contest we have done as far as choosing a winner goes. Somehow I doubt song-to-scene is going to be as easy, especially since people seem to be judging with different criteria.
So to recap, the song-to-scene is NOT your favorite song. We just finished that one. It is NOT your favorite scene. We will do that contest in another hiatus. It is NOT the song you remember most. It is NOT the song that you had a gut reaction to the first time you saw the scene. In fact, the best song-to-scene may even be a song you hate in a scene you dislike. It is simply the song that best fits the particular scene it is in - lyrics and mood. If the song could be switched out for half a dozen other songs and still have had the same impact, it is NOT a good choice either. Hopefully that helps clarify what we are looking for here.
You can choose up to 5 scenes. This poll and the next one will determine which episodes will enter the contest and what their ranking will be from #17-32. The first 16 were already determined in the preliminary nomination round. So once again, happy voting and merry Christmas.

For these polls I have broken it down into great song-to-scene fit, good song-to-scene fit, mediocre, and "I can't believe this is in here" levels.
ReplyDeleteBest Song-to-Scene in these choices (ranking order)-
Cold as Ice - It was Ellen. She was royally ticked. Cold as Ice might not be enough to describe the temperature in that Impala on the drive back.
Man in the Wilderness - Probably the top 5 in the lyrics fitting perfectly. It correctly captured Dean's character and the time in which the scene took place plus added some foreshadowing as a bonus: Another year has passed me by / Still I look at myself and cry / What kind of man have I become? / All of the years I've spent in search of myself / And I'm still in the dark / 'Cause I can't seem to find the light alone / Sometimes I feel like a man in the wilderness / I'm a lonely soldier off to war / Sent away to dies - never quite knowing why / Sometimes it makes no sense at all
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - I spent some time thinking of other Christmas songs because I was sure they would have the same punch as this one. So far, nada. This is by far the best Christmas song for that scene that I have thought of.
Good Song-to-Scene (alpha order) -
Black Water - It was black water and it kept rollin' alright. Inspired chorus choice. Still the verses don't match as well as some songs in this contest.
The Gambler - Perfect song to characterize Bobby. Scene was a generic montage.
Rooster - Fits the mood right. Inspired chorus choice. Verses match less.
Worst Song-to-Scene in these choices (alpha order) -
All Out of Love - This could have been any Air Supply song at all and nothing would have changed. In fact, it could have been any cheesy love song.
Can't Fight This Feeling - This may be my favorite cheesy love song but the same thing applies to this one as All Out of Love
Turn into Earth - It's hard to be a perfect song-to-scene when their aren't any lyrics played. Well except for "Ah." Quite frankly they could have saved some money and created a similar riff in house.
Walking on Sunshine - Again this could have been any upbeat pop song and Charlie could have still danced to it. Quite frankly, it was the dancing not the song that made the scene. This one will rank high and make it into the contest but it shouldn't. Just like Eye of the Tiger.
You Sexy Thing - Making monsters and having people kill is not sexy. Plus it could have been almost any song.
I chose Black Water. Cold as Ice, The Gambler, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, and Man in the Wilderness. Of these five, I would list in order 1. Man in the Wilderness, 2. Black Water 3. Cold as Ice, 4. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, and 5. The Gambler

ReplyDeleteI think the only real hope we have for the ultimate winner to be a true song-to-scene fit is in Renegade and O Death. Other than that it is going to go the way of most internet polls, which means it won't fit the category people just like it. Same thing with episode title. Be prepared because every step of the way I am going to say that Eye of the Tiger is not a song-to-scene choice because the outtake is not a scene. The only thing people will be voting for is the moment when Dean is air rocking in the Impala and Sam bangs on the roof. Good scene but it could have been any song in the history of songs with a good beat. Still won't stop Eye of the Tiger from getting in the top 5 or even winning it outright.

ReplyDeleteI voted for Can't Fight this Feeling, Cold as Ice, the Gambler, One Way or Another, and Walking on Sunshine. The big one that's missing in this poll for me: Space Oddity, when Dean is fighting the fairy in Clap Your Hands if You Believe! I'll never forget that one. Just the right mix of creepy and amusing.
