We're in the final showdown and while it's not likely to be a nail biter, I do think both songs deserve to be here. Both are classic rock songs by classic bands - a tribute to what Kripke envisioned. To get to the finale Carry on Wayward Son decimated all its competition with results in the 80's and 90's. The closest race the de facto theme song of Supernatural encountered was against Highway to Hell by AC/DC where it won by 87%. It also beat Cherry Pie (96%), Knockin' on Heaven's Door (89%), and Eye of the Tiger (91%). Let's see if AC/DC's other hit, Back in Black, can do better. For it to get in, it beat Ready for Love (90%), All out of Love (77%), O Death (57%), and Renegade (52% or 10 votes).
Today we also finish the preliminary polls for the wildcard positions in song-to-scene. We will do the final polls over the next two days and then start that contest. It will run exactly like this one did. Thanks to everyone who is participating and happy voting!

To be honest, I won't vote for any of these when we get to the contest. They are all particularly weak either in lyrics or placement. For instance, We Gotta Get Out of This Place would have been perfect if they had placed it in any of the episode's Purgatory flashbacks but instead it was just another song on the radio. With Turn into Earth, the only lyrics played were "Ah." Yep, that's it. White Rabbit fit the eerie mood but it's lyrics were completely off and Man Upstairs only fits if they meant to be very sarcastic. After all, Supernatural doesn't associate God with loving kindness ever. And how sexy can someone be if they are giving you a virus to turn you into a cannibalistic monster?
ReplyDeleteIt's obvious that the music was not chosen for how well it fit the scene in these instances. Not saying that there aren't great songs in here - there are. Not saying that there are not good scenes in here - again there are. They just don't match well. For the second time, I will not nominate as many choices as I have.
The Gambler - Bobby was often the one to tell them when to hold off, when to fold, when to walk away and when they needed to run. He took frequent gambles to help the brothers or to save the world and we all know he liked his whiskey. In this way the song fits the character more than the scene.
Wake Up Little Susie - On the surface level, Sam was kind of asleep and the devil woke him up. Of course I don't think he was too worried about bringing his sleepy date home in the early hours of the morning. In all likelihood I will not vote for this one when I do my votes later. Even though I really like the song.
You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet - Um, Sam pretty much said what he saw was a first for him and that he needed brain bleach or a mind wipe to forget. Still the song also fits Dean and his love scene with random chicks #89 and #90. Not that we saw that and I consider myself more fortunate than Sam with that.
You Shook Me All Night Long - Apparently Dean had a great night with Lydia since she was the first fling we've seen Dean try to contact the next day. As for the other part, I'd say it was more You Dismembered Me 5 Minutes Long….and that 5 minutes was about 4.5 minutes too long. Blech!
After my wedding party walked in to the theme from Chariots of Fire my wife and I danced in to Back in Black.

The Gambler - As Dahne said, fits Bobby more than the scene itself, but is a better fit than some others.

..The final poll is a trick both song are good and represent different situation in the long journey of the boys of course i choose carry on is the dads song for his boys ,the songs represent there pass to life and how they deal with that is the theme song of there journey
ReplyDeleteI'm mildly disappointed that Renegade didn't make it into the finals, but I wouldn't have been able to vote for it over Carry On Wayward Son anyway. I've had a serious love for that song for years, before I even came across Supernatural. And it has some of my absolute favorite guitar solos of all time haha
ReplyDeleteCarry On Wayward Son is walking away it so far. 88-11. Wow.The Gambler is sort of Bobby in a way. He is always telling the boys how to hold em and fold em. Walking on Sunshine kind of suits Charlie's attitude about life up to this point...before she got involved with Dick Roman and Sam and Dean. The remainder of the songs just don't suit the episodes for me.
ReplyDeleteOn this list....Walking on Sunshine ranks number one (it was a great character introduction) Then The Gambler (I just love that Bobby montage), The Man Upstairs, White Rabbit, You Sexy Thing( the song made me look at that scene and I liked the juxtaposition of sight and sound.)
ReplyDeletehmm...With The Gambler, I thought the song fit the scene because it fit the character, in an ep that was *about* who the character was. The Man Upstairs, was a perfect match to the song, for me, *because* of the character's attitude in that scene. I will confess that your reasons for thinking White Rabbit was a weak selection for that scene....could be an example of me picking the song more for the song than the match up. But not all of my choices work for me because there's a logical reason. Sometimes I went by the visceral reaction a song caused me to have in a scene and whether I went where the show wanted me to go.
