Sons of Anarchy - Kurt Sutter Conference Call

Last night’s episode drew the highest viewing figures ever for a Sons of Anarchy finale, and 3rd most-watched episode ever, behind the Seasons 4 and 5 premiers. I’ve just had a conference call with Kurt Sutter to discuss the success of the show and see what he has in mind for what will (probably) be the last season next September.

Kurt explained that he usually brings a very loose ‘blue print’ of what he wants to see happening that year to the first meeting with the team of writers. This has become less structured each year, as he has found himself preferring to see what works well during rehearsal and filming. He explained that many plot lines have come about in a very organic way from what sparks between characters and actors as they work together. The only really important journey that had been there from day one of Season 6 was that Jax had to realise that he made a far better outlaw than he did husband or father.

As for next year, Kurt is still looking to wrap the show up by the end of Season 7. But if they find there is more story to be told then he will try to either extend the season or possibly do a Season 8. He is very conscious that he doesn’t want to ‘jump the shark’ by dragging it out too long, and is confident that because he is very involved in it, calling it “my labour of love”, that he will know how and when to finish it. It may surprise fans to know that not all the characters futures are written in stone; for example he has no idea what will happen to Clay at this point, he’s excited to see where prison life will take him.

Some other relationships he is looking forward to exploring in Season 7 are Jax with both Bobby and Chibs. He feels that Chibs has almost taken on Opie’s old role, which is bringing out a new side to him, and Bobby turning in his VP patch will obviously change his dynamic with the president too. Now that Jax has to rebuild the club up from the inside, Gemma will also be featuring in his life more as a strong person he can trust.

Kurt joked that one of the reason he had Otto bite his own tongue out was so that he won’t have to learn any more lines, so expect to see more cameos coming up. As for other guests, Donal Logue (I’m pretty sure he said him, but the phone line went a little fuzzy at this point) will be back for at least another 7-8 episodes next year. He’d also love to have Jimmy Smits back too; he loves his relationship with Gemma due to the fact that she isn’t able to manipulate him as much as she could Clay or JT. One other person Sutter would love to attract back is Drea de Matteo, but that is all dependant on how her new pilot does.

I should have the transcript few in the next few days, Andy or I will post it so that you can read the entire interview.
