-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a Tuesday overnight victory for CBS with its atypical combination of annual animated classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (#2: 5.9 rating/9 share), a 9 p.m. repeat of NCIS (#1: 6.9/11) and annual special Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (#1: 6.4/11). Compared to this same line-up one year earlier (average 7.0/11 on Tuesday 11/29/11), the network slipped by nine percent. Demo friendly Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (opposite The Voice on NBC) dropped by 14 percent, while The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was flat from the year-ago telecast (and that translated into 10.39 million viewers and a 4.6 rating/12 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day results). Rudolph averaged 12.64 million viewers and a 4.0/11 on that same evening.

Aforementioned The Voice on NBC led the 8 p.m. hour (and the evening), with a rock-solid 7.8/13 in the overnights and its best Tuesday performance since October 9. Freshman sitcom Go On at 9 p.m. slipped by 44 percent to a second-place 4.5/ 7. But that, too, was its best overnight since October 9 and it bested the 9-9:30 p.m. portion of The Biggest Loser one year earlier (4.3/ 7 on 12/06/11) by five percent. Go On also outdelivered competing sitcoms New Girl on Fox (#3: 3.3/ 5: down 34 percent from the year-ago evening) and Happy Endings on ABC (#4: 2.5/ 4) by 36 percent and 72 percent, respectively.

Next on NBC was The New Normal at a second-place 3.3/ 5 at 9:30 p.m., which slipped by 27 percent from Go On, followed by drama Parenthood at an above-average 3.7/ 6 at 10 p.m. (#2). Regardless of the slippage, The New Normal outdelivered competing sitcoms Don’t Trust the B___ in Apartment 23 on ABC (#3: 2.3/ 4) and The Mindy Project on Fox (#4: 2.1/ 3) by 43 percent and 57 percent, respectively. The moral of the story: There are too many comedies competing in the Tuesday 9 p.m. hour.

Over at ABC, a special Tuesday edition of Shark Tank scored a respectable third-place 5.2/ 8 in the overnights at 8 p.m., which built from the year-ago combination of sitcoms Last Man Standing (5.8/ 9 on 12/06/11) and short-lived Man Up! (3.2/ 5) by an average of 16 percent. Shark Tank also outscored its typical Friday overnight performance, and this should easily translate into a season high.

In was downhill for ABC in the 9 p.m. hour, unfortunately, care of aforementioned comedies Happy Endings (#4: 2.5/ 4) and Don’t Trust the B____ in Apartment 23 (#3: 2.3/ 4), followed by soon-to-conclude Private Practice at a third-place 3.4/ 6 at 10 p.m.

On Fox, the combination of comedies Raising Hope (#4: 2.7/ 4) and Ben and Kate (#4: 1.9/ 3) in the 8 p.m. hour dropped by a considerable 57 percent, on average, from year-ago occupant Glee (5.4/ 8 on 12/06/11). And aforementioned New Girl (#3: 3.3/ 5) and The Mindy Project (#4: 2.1/ 3) from 9-10 p.m. slipped from the year-ago pairing of New Girl (5.0/ 8) and Raising Hope (3.4/ 5) by an average of 36 percent. Fox may want to rethink airing two-hours of live action comedies on Tuesday.

The CW capped off the evening with sophomore Hart of Dixie (#5: 1.4/ 2) and canceled Emily Owens, M.D. (#5: 1.1/ 2), which could not compete.
