-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led this third Monday in December in the overnights, beating second-place NBC by seven percent. But the home of The Voice is a lock for leadership among coveted among adults 18-49. In the distant No. 3 spot was Dancing With the Stars-less ABC, followed by a night of low-rated holiday specials on Fox and the two-hour series-finale of Gossip Girl on The CW, which exited with a mere 1.1 rating/2 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Coming up on The CW in the Monday 8 p.m. hour effective on January 14 is Sex and the City prequel The Carrie Diaries (which leads into relocated 90210).
A 90-minute edition of The Voice topped the night, with an 8.6/13 in the overnights from 8-9:30 p.m. Comparably, that was The Voice’s highest overnight rating since September 17. Leading out of The Voice was a preview of new NBC sitcom 1600, which was sampled at a 4.5/ 7 (#2) at 9:30 p.m. (#2). But retention of only 54 percent out of the 9 p.m. half-hour of The Voice (8.4/13) and a planned launch in the Thursday 9:30 p.m. half-hour (out of tired The Office) on January 10 means 1600 Penn faces an uphill battle. Competing CBS sitcom Mike & Molly (#1: 6.9/10) beat 1600 Penn by a hefty 53 percent in the overnights.
At 10 p.m. on NBC was the season (or series) finale of game show Take It All at a very distant third-place 2.8/ 5, which means any future episodes are unlikely. A better move would be to bring Howie Mandel back in the return of Deal or No Deal.
On CBS, two episodes of veteran sitcom How I Met Your Mother was above average, with a 5.8/ 9 at 8 p.m. and a 6.0/ 9 at 8:30 p.m. Both half-hours finished second behind The Voice and both will resonate in the young adult demos. At 9 p.m., 2 Broke Girls rose to a 6.8/10 (#2), which was 13 percent above the 8:30 p.m. portion of How I Met Your Mother, followed by aforementioned Mike & Molly at a dominant 6.9/10 at 9:30 p.m. Hawaii Five-O capped off the night for the Eye net with a first-place 6.6/11 at 10 p.m.
ABC featured two more episodes of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (8 p.m.: #3, 3.2/ 5; 9 p.m.: #3, 3.5/ 6), which really needs to officially retire at this point, and an encore telecast of Castle (#2: 3.8/ 6 at 10 p.m.).
Fox, meanwhile, populated the evening with half-hour special Dreamworks Dragons: A Gift of the Night Fury (#4: 2.2/ 3 at 8 p.m.), a repeat of animated Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas (#4: 2.3/ 3 at 8:30 p.m.) and a repeat of annual holiday special Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown (#4: 1.7/ 3 from 9-10 p.m.).
