I was pretty underwhelmed with the episode as a whole if I'm honest, lots of it didn't seem to make much sense, but that could be down to how rough I'm feeling I guess. Here's a list of some of the things that I didn't understand:
Why did it rain tears? And, how did that help? Why did Clara say 'pond' as her one word answer? Or did Vastra make that up? Why the snog?? How did the Intelligence start existing in the snowman 50 years ago? Why did the snowmen eat the workers? Why didn't the Doctor move the TARDIS and catch Clara as she fell, like he does with River?
There are many more, I'm sure, lol.
Anyway, I went with seeing the new interior for the poll. Not so sure about the blueness of it (is that meant to mirror the doctors mood since losing the ponds?) but I liked it apart from that.
The scene in which Clara told the ice governess that "the position was taken" has my vote, though the one-word riddle-off between her and Vastra ranks a close second.
I can't make up my mind about Clara, I think I preferred her in the Dalek episode to this one. Will be interesting to see how the rest of her story pans out.
You'll forgive us for confused as to why you have questions when all but one of them was properly answered. The other was hokey, Moffat-logic, but difficult to fault him for that in the Christmas Special.
I love Clara, I really do. But I'd say my favorite scene (well all of Vastra and Jenny's scenes were my favorite) was when they are at the door and Vastra says, "I am a lizard woman from the dawn of time and this is my wife." Still not as good as RTD Christmas eps, but a decent one.
Well, like I said, I am ill with flu and so have probably missed bits which is why I'm asking people to explain them to me, lol. Some people on twitter have tried explaining the rain of tears to me, but I still find it completely ridiculous I'm afraid :(
I'm a HUGE Moffat/Smith fan, much more so that RTD one, but I think this is the first episode I've really had any problems with. Two of my biggest gripes with it was that it wasn't a stand alone episode like previous Xmas stories, therefore it's alienating people who only tune in for that one episode every year. And secondly the way 11 treated Strax was offensive to me, name calling is really not what I like to see the Doctor doing :(
Clara said "Pond" because the Pond that never thawed was the center of the problem she needed the Doctors help with. It's double-meaning was unintended by her.
Why the snog? Pretty self-evident, I'd think. She likes him. Whether or not she's a love interesty companion remains to be seen, but they've done the BFF thing twice in a row now with Amy and Donna, so it wouldn't surprise me.
Why did the Intelligence start existing in the snow? Because the Snow was alien and telepathic to begin with, and forged a connection to Doctor Simeon as a child. It was a reflection that took on it's own form.
Why did the Snowmen eat the workers? Because Simeon thought the Snowmen into doing it.
Why didn't the Doctor catch Clara like River. Well, it happened pretty quick and right in front of him, so going back in time would be crossing his own line. The River stunt from last seasons premiere was one of those things that didn't make much sense other than the fact that it was a neat idea. Moffat-logic.
Alienating non-recurring viewers? Screw 'em. I know it's not very nice but the Christmas episodes were never intended to be stand-alones every single year, they were intended to lead-into the new season. They often introduce a new companion or Doctor (10th Doctor, Donna) and often set-up the next arc (Torchwood).
As for The Doctor's behavior, I'd guess that you are one of these people who only tune in once a year, given your previous issue? A recurring element of the Doctor's character is how dangerous and angry he gets when he is alone for too long. We're led to believe he's lived years since the Ponds "deaths". A companion holds him accountable and keeps him friendly.
I've been a fan of the show since the mid 70s, so I'm not a part time viewer by any means. Cheers for the insights to the bits I don't get, I think a lot of it is conjunction and guess work still thou. For example, I expected (going from 11's time with Amy and Clara's job) that the one word answer would be 'children'. Pond still seems an odd thing for her to say instead, for me it doesn't match up right which is why I wondered if Vastra made that bit up.
I sincerely hope and pray that Clara will not become a love interest, it's been done a few times since the reboot and I've not liked it at all. I was excited by the thought of a non modern day companion when I heard that this was the setting of the Xmas episode, but instead it looks like we're in for another Amy/Rory/River mystery companion thing.
As for the Doctor's behaviour, I can't agree with you at all. Calling Strax potato head and demeaning his race in the way he did isn't something I can recall him doing before about a supposed friend or good guy. And neither did he do it in a rage or anger, it was just how he treated the character as normal. I know he's been companionless for a hundred years or so now, but there would have been better ways of showing how this has effected him than resorting to demeaning someone due to their species. If he was saying that to/about a human because of their race it would be extremely offensive and I doubt it would get passed the censors.
I take her word at face value because we had very little reason to question it. She saught the Doctor out after discovering the Pond and what might come from it. I think the double-meaning was unintended by her, but meant to stir the character and the audience. It's just how Moffat writes.
Whether or not Clara is a love interest... It's going to be what it's going to be. The kiss and the sexual banter was not subtle, but Amy had more than a little of the same in her first few episodes (well, right until they brought Rory in full time), so you just never know.
The Doctor's behavior, though... the last two episodes that dealt with this, both specials, had him act WAY worse than he did in this one. In Runaway Bride, he attempted to drown an entire species out of existence. In Waters of Mars, he proclaimed himself the winner of the Time War and basically decided he can control time any which way he chooses, in spite of the consequences. Calling a guy a psychotic potato dwarf (who kind of is a psychotic potato dwarf) seems pretty small in comparison.
I'll take a shot at answering some of these: Why did it rain tears? And, how did that help? The show was latching onto the thoughts and emotions of the people around it. The emotional state of the family (crying, sadness) changed the snowflakes to rain. The snow can't hurt anyone if it isn't in a solid form, so that's how changing to rain helped.
Why did Clara say 'pond' as her one word answer? Or did Vastra make that up? We can only assume Clara said it because we heard Vastra say it but not Clara. I figure Clara did say "pond," referring to where the governess died, unaware of the alternate meaning the word holds with The Doctor. A fortunate coincidence, basically.
Why the snog?? Clara seems quite adventurous and fascinated with The Doctor. I assume the fact that she would kiss this relative stranger as she did is a reflection of her brazen personality.
How did the Intelligence start existing in the snowman 50 years ago? The snow, being intelligent already, became wholly anthropomorphic when it was built into a snowman by the boy and it absorbed his thoughts and emotions.
Why did the snowmen eat the workers? I doubt they need to eat people for sustenance so I assumed they did it purely for the vicious, evil nature of the act and because Dr. Simeon wanted them to.
Why didn't the Doctor move the TARDIS and catch Clara as she fell, like he does with River? The Doctor was able to rescue River with the TARDIS because Canton told The Doctor where and when River jumped. The Doctor wasn't there so going back to get her wouldn't intersect with his own timeline like it would if he tried the same thing with Clara.
I still can't get my head around the rain of tears though, I've had a few people explain it to me now, but I'm still left thinking it's complete nonsense :(
Honestly, so do I. Even with the explanation that makes tenuous sense within the context of the episode, I find the entire concept to be ludicrous. It's probably why the majority of the episode's focus was on The Doctor and Clara and the actual monster plot of the special was pushed to the background.
I agree with what you say about the Doctor's behavior toward Starx. In that metter I want to remind two thing: 1. Regardless to the fact that Starx is now a freind, giving the Doctor's history with the sontaran, it is understandable he would show some resentment. Espcialy when Starx can't help bringing it up himself (e.g. - offering the use of granades). 2. Despite what Sandi wrote the 9th Doctor did show many resentment to the human race, if you recall. Rose even mentiond this to Jack when they met, saying he tends to insult us when he's angry. All in all, I whould've been surprised if the Doctor didn't get upset with him.
Was there a second Christmas special that I missed? The one I saw was titled Doctor Who: The Snowmen. Was Doctor Who: The Snowman a minisode or something of that nature?
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteYou must have missed some stuff. Watch it again and you'll find answers to most, if not all, of your questions.
ReplyDeleteI've watched it 3 times, lol
ReplyDelete'I understand you're the previous governess. I regret to inform you, the position is taken. Good night.' Best. Scene. Ever.
ReplyDeleteI liked the scenes where Clara referenced 'souffle girl'
ReplyDeleteWith Tests to Clara. I liked both scene
ReplyDeletei loved the way clara went to the cloud and then kept mentioning it to the doctor that he lives on the cloud. she is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI can't make up my mind about Clara, I think I preferred her in the Dalek episode to this one. Will be interesting to see how the rest of her story pans out.
ReplyDeleteI consider it one scene, but the whole sequence with Clara/Doctor bantering up the staircase and into the Tardis (where he gave her the key).
ReplyDeleteAlthough the one word test was awesome, too.

ReplyDeleteI think the part where she runs around the TARDIS is a close second.

Everything with Strax in it.
ReplyDeleteLol, Sandi is the person who gets the episodes early and teases them xD

That was a really difficult decision. It was between Clara getting the key and Clara finding the ladder. I finally picked the key.
ReplyDeleteOh Yes! I loved the one word test!
ReplyDeleteHaha, I had to lol at that line too XD 9_9
ReplyDeleteCheers Bruce, that's much more helpful :)
