  2. Firstly this wasn't a xmas special... it was two normal episodes of last series tagged together.... Secondly it was dire plot and production... so disjointed and the whole sequence of events was in La-La-Land !!! Thirdly and Finally how Awful to have such a horrific ending on Xmas Day of all days!!! Not sure that I can ever watch Downton again... I think Julian has Shot his Bolt...

  3. The happiest moments were with Thomas and Jimmy talking, with Carson and Sybbie, with Edith and Michael, with Matthew and Mary and baby.
The worst were Edna scenes and of course last scene.
But it was great episode except ending, but I thought it would be Christmas, not regular just longer episode.

  4. As always a lot of the writing was silly and the plot was unbelievable and not very well paced. For some reason that doesn't stop the show being entertaining and I think that's largely down to the brilliant acting and the fact it's all so very pretty. My Mum's convinced Julian Fellowes makes it all ludicrous on purpose because he thinks that's what we want. and maybe it is.

While I love any scene involving Rob James Collier, even considering Thomas' humbling experiences last series he was behaving beyond OOC this episode. He was being nice to literally everyone and didn't once throw his weight around beyond a barbed comment about Mrs Patmore. Really? I hope that in the next series they'll try to suggest that this transition hasn't been quite so straightforward because Thomas is one of the only genuinely complex characters on the show and he deserves better than this total turnaround.

It's like Fellowes has realised that viewers empathise with Thomas and has decided he therefore has to be an out-and-out good guy without any shades of grey. But then he wouldn't be Thomas anymore. He'd just be another Bates. And frankly that would be a fate worse than death for him, since I spent this entire episode hoping that Bates would be revealed as some kind of psychopath who would suddenly smack Anna over the head with a candlestick for daring to reel in public. Anything to prevent them having another simpering picnic. ANYTHING.

  5. A terrible end for a Christmas special. Badly done, way to spoil Christmas day for families up and down the country!

  6. First Merlin, now this. Is there a single British show that gets the concept of Christmas? Last year, DA gave us a Christmas special with Mary saying yes to Matthew and this year, this? Are you kidding me? I'm so freaking done with British shows! I start watching shows to have a good time not cry on Christmas day!

  8. This whole season has been kinda dark and depressing and what a terrible way to end a christmas episode. I really hope that next season will be more cheerful and upbeat.

  9. i thought it was an amazing episode.. it worked as a set up episode to show you the direction season 4 is going towards..

  10. I was expecting this end since the announce that Matthew will not be in season 4... but it was so sad...

  11. I was dreading something happening to Matthew the ENTIRE episode. First with the hunting I figured he'd have some animal related accident, then I thought he'd have a car crash on his way to the hospital. They at least had him seeing his son, then. I guess that doesn't make it that much easier. I really do wonder if they couldn't have written the character out some other way, leaving the door open for the occasional return.

I find Bates to often be quite scary. Like he's on the verge of snapping all the time. It struck me a couple of times this episode.

Jimmy and Thomas now getting along doesn't make any sense, even if Thomas came to his rescue. It's still creepy as hell.

I can't say that I'm particularly looking forward to next season as much as I was last year. The Rose character doesn't interest me all that much, and really it's all just so depressing. Edith never gets a break, this family goes through one loss after the other, it's all just misery and pain. At least they didn't write out Maggie Smith so hopefully she'll still be part of season 4! Does anyone know the state of those negotiations?

I really think that Merlin and Downton Abbey both killing off their main characters was really self-indulgent of the script writers. Christmas is a time to escape for a bit from the trials of life and it shows a complete lack of respect for audiences who watch for a bit of light hearted entertainment. To the producers: you have caused tears at Christmas and I will not remember you shows fondly. I wish I had spent my time in other more positive ways. Dan Stevens' character could have died at the start of next season!!!
