The midseason finale of the drama begins with Castle learning that his mother (Susan Sullivan) and his daughter (Molly Quinn) have both made other plans for Christmas Eve. Castle is hurt and disappointed, but he decides that it will be the perfect time to start a new tradition with Beckett (Stana Katic). But when Castle suggests they spend the holiday together, Kate tells him that it will depend on whether or not she has to work.
Both are soon distracted from potential holiday plans when a family playing in Central Park sees a man dressed as Santa fall from the sky to his death. Castle thinks he fell out of his sleigh, especially when air traffic control reports there were no planes in the areas, but Beckett reminds him that there is no Santa and there has to be a reasonable explanation for what killed him.
The mystery of who killed Santa and why takes a few dark turns, but the show does make an effort to keep things light, thanks to Castle and his inner child trying to find the magic of the season in the case. But the emotional side of the episode goes deep as well, not only with Castle fearing that he’ll be alone on Christmas Eve, but with the side storylines for Ryan (Seamus Dever), Esposito (Jon Huertas) and Captain Gates (Penny Johnson Jerald).
