Bones 8.08 - The But in the Joke - Recap/Review (Spoilers)

Last week’s episode of Bones started with a kid pasting his own graphite over an existing billboard. He awakens to find Booth and Brennan over him. He ended up gluing himself to a dead body when his glue canister fell. They can’t pull them apart as might rip off his skin. There’s insect and rat activity on the body leading them to conclude they were near a sewer.

Hodgins asks to borrow Angela’s peanut butter which she doesn’t want to give him because she’s not supposed to have it in the first place. The victim was a Caucasian male in his early thirties with an unusual fusion of his spinal vertebrae. The arrow in the vic’s head leads them to call him Steve Martin. Angela looks at the photo he was trying to hang up and insists his name is Zed. He finally tells them his name is Seth and that he doesn’t want to be rubbed down with peanut butter. They ask if he wants to be sedated.

They’ve identified the victim and his boss is distraught because the vic was the heir apparent to take over the company. He was the best seller the guy had of time shares. The vic’s girlfriend had cheated on his boss with him. The vic murmurs about Sunday mornings with his mom and the squint says it’s weird when the remains talk. Angela comes back to talk to him about Zed, his alter-ego. She babbles because she is star struck and he asks if she wants to make out. She has to decline because of who he is and the guys have begun to separate.

The vic’s girlfriend and her brother find the topic of the guy’s death hilarious. Both Booth and Bones are disconcerted by this. The time of death was five days ago the same day the victim’s girlfriend accused him of cheating. Zed falls on the floor and spills that he kissed Angela.

The girlfriend is experiencing a sudden mood swing where as opposed to very funny, she’s very sad. She figured that the news was Morgan’s (dead guy) way of making up with her. She says she doesn’t think his boss could have done it because even he thinks faster than that.

Mr. Fisher finds the death a little funnier than most people would and Booth thinks that the fact Morgan was a prankster was payback because nobody likes pranksters. Zed thinks Angela used to have integrity in her art before she got married and had a kid. He compliments her technique and then leaves Angela looking a little bothered.

On the tapes the brother provides, there’s a heckler on a number of the tapes. Fisher had provided the information that it’s unusual to have a constant heckler. They go to talk to the guy and he tells them he wrote the lines Morgan heckled him back with. On the way out, they find a poster with a guy with an arrow thru his head, the same thing they found on the victim who hated that gag. The competitor tells them his arrow gag was stolen, his prime suspect; their dead guy. They test his giant mallet and find blood.

Angela and Hodgins finally talk about the kiss with the street artist. Angela insists that it was harmless and he tells her that if she was going to leave him it would be for somebody cool. She tells Hodgins that she kissed the vic because his art is changing the world. Apparently when Zed told her that her technique was good it was an insult because it’s like saying she’s good at saying inside the lines.

Sweets brings in an analysis of two of the jokes and prove that they are not written by the same person. Sweets wants Booth to perform a comedy routine that he and fisher wrote with some of the stolen jokes. He gave Booth a little over an hour and where do you get black index cards?

They go to the comedy club and Booth gets booed with all the joke Fisher and Sweets wrote fro him but when he starts his own line of joking, he gets a response and you know what, Booth can be intentionally funny! You have to see it; they’re all gun jokes but funny. A woman stood up and called him out on the jokes. She doesn’t have a motive because she was writing the jokes for him, he bought them. She isn’t funny but she writes funny.

The dead guy was hit three times reminiscent of the Three Stooges. Hodgins comes in to help with the conclusion Morgan was killed in the toilet. And after getting a warrant, Hodgins starts the thankless job of checking all the toilets he came in regular contact with. In the girlfriend’s bog he finds a suspicious flake.

Bones and Brennan ask whether Morgan was feeling well the night she cooked for him. She asks for a lawyer and one for her brother. The brother confesses to killing Morgan because he was moving to New York and going to dump his sister. The sister starts crying.

Angela alerts Hodgins to the presence of Zed. He looks at what she painted and starts to walk away. Hodgins gets out of the car and calls after him. Zed tells them that he couldn’t paint anything funnier than what was there. He then tells her that her technique sucked.
