"Supernatural" has some big things planned for the second half of Season 8, but you won't want to miss Episode 12, titled "As Time Goes By," when Gil McKinney, an "ER" and "Friday Night Lights" alum, guest stars in a very important role.
The episode deals with time travel and involves a man called Henry being transported to the present day; but this isn't a simple "monster of the week" case for the Winchesters. The Huffington Post was on set for the filming of the episode, and we can exclusively reveal that the time-traveller is none other than Henry Winchester (McKinney), Sam and Dean's paternal grandfather. McKinney certainly has the bone structure to fit in well with the Winchester clan.
"This is a [man] we knew nothing about, because he was never involved in our lives or the lives of people that were involved directly with us," Jensen Ackles told us on set. "It’s kind of getting some insight into the life and the legacy of the Winchesters, which is something that we as characters never really knew."
Jared Padalecki agreed, adding, "And we found out about the Campbells. We knew their mom, kind of knew her business, and so it’s interesting to see from a Winchester perspective what happened, and learn a little bit more about our father."

Ooh, interesting! I like that we're going to meet John's father.
ReplyDeleteIt's John's dad! I love this idea!
ReplyDelete:OOOO YEAH!!!Another Winchester!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D
ReplyDeleteCool!Just be better than Samuel,please..Not a hard thing to do!
ReplyDeleteWell if John knew nothing about hunting, what can we learn from his dad? I don't see him being a closet hunter.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand what Jensen is saying. Henry Winchester is someone the brothers never knew anything "about because he was never involved in [their] lives or the lives of people that were involved directly with [them]." So, he is saying that no one has ever talked about Henry because he wasn't involved with their dad or is he saying that he saying that John Winchester was never directly involved with Sam or Dean? Because I thought John Winchester did make the occasional cameo appearance in the brothers' lives or are the further destroying John's character by saying he was never directly involved with Sam and Dean- he just forced them from an extreme distance to become hunters?
ReplyDeleteOkay, now, I'm being catty. But it doesn't make sense to say that no one knew Henry Winchester who was involved with Sam and Dean. Because John Winchester WAS INVOLVED IN SAM AND DEAN'S LIVES AND YOU CAN'T CHANGE THAT SHOW! NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU TRY TO DRAG HIM DOWN! (I'm little protective of John Winchester, but I'm convinced the only reason they don't write John Winchester back into the show is because the know if they did the character would probably break the fourth wall and shoot all the writers' in the head for how much they have tried to destroy his relationship with his sons.)
But Jensen might have just misspoke and meant that John never talked about his dad and no one else knew him. Because I'm pretty sure "In the Beginning" some random guy said to John "say hello to your old man for me." So, Henry Winchester must of been involved in John's live and I don't think there relationship was horrible since John didn't seem fazed by someone telling him to say hello to his dad. But maybe they're changing that, so John's dad was a dead beat. It's not like they kept half the cast in character his season. Too bad they don't have the same writer who wrote this wonderful episode of "In the Beginning" anymore. He would have been able. . . oh, wait.
This will be fascinating. I can hardly wait.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure Jensen meant that Henry was never a part of Sam and Dean's lives and wasn't involved in his son's (John's) life when they were kids, for some reason.
ReplyDeleteAnd their half brother's name was Adam. I keep saying it was a big mistake to just drop his story like that without even a throw away line about Adam somehow being out of Hell, because he doesn't deserve it, and I believe Dean and Sam would at least have done a little more to try to find a way to save him. They've done more for strangers.
I'm hoping that's what Jensen meant, because he seems to be one of the last strong hold-out for John Winchester on the show. I hoping with more information on John, we'll eventually get him back, but that's just me. Still, it seemed like odd phrasing to say that no one directly involved in their lives knew much about Henry. Because why not just say they're learning more about John's many secrets? Why say he wasn't involved?
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree about Adam. I don't understand why they had to put Adam in Hell in the first place. Why mention that he's in the cage if they weren't going to do anything about it? Why not just have Adam be in Heaven with his mom? I just don't understand why Sam and Dean would have left him there?
Love the thought of exploring the Winchester lineage and why John became who he did.
ReplyDeleteCool!
ReplyDeleteweren't Winchester is an ordinary guy???? hmmm.....
ReplyDeleteIt would be cheap as hell to make him aware of the supernatural world.
ReplyDeleteBest idea in years. <3 Just please do it justice. I love that SPN is finally starting to treat John with respect again. [Dare I hope JDM will cap off the season finale? There's no one I want more on the show short of the Js]
ReplyDeleteI've been reading around the various sites and I'm left wondering about this whole season.
ReplyDeleteX
First of all the so-called story arc is about closing the gates of Hell, but just what does that really mean?
Does it mean that once closed, demons can no longer get out to walk the Earth, and if so, is it a two way thing? Demons can't get out and "bad" souls when they die can't get in either?Does this mean that the King Crowley is forever confined to Hell too?
X
Then let's say they do manage close the gates, that leaves Purgatory and Heaven still wide open.
For me that presents a big problem.
X
Good and evil are supposed to balance themselves out, so if you take evil out of the equation that leaves Heaven in a very powerful position, with no contrast, and we all know that angels are really no better than demons. They just kill with more self- righteousness because they are the "heavenly host" and can do no wrong, and that would give them free rein on Earth to do whatever the heck they want.
X
Now unless the writers have planned to shut the gates of Purgatory in season 9 and the Heavenly gates in season 10, I can't say I'm in agreement with closing the gates of Hell at all. I think it's wrong.
X
X
Then i don't get the Benny arc either. What's the point to him?
If he turns out bad it's just a rehash, and if he is the good friendly neighbourhood monster, there's really no point to him either. We've already had the good monster story too with Lenore.
X
Then what use is the Amelia arc? Here too, if it is just supposed to be an attempt at showing us how Sam finally gets his wish for normal, then okay, but again is there any point to it?
We've already been through the normal versus hunting theme with Lisa, Jess etc, or perhaps they've simply decided to turn SPN into Soapernatural! complete with iffy Sameliadon love triangle!
Maybe Bitten's love triangle was just a fore runner /warning for Sam's!
Then if she is a bad guy/demon/fallenangel whatever, well Ruby was there first!
X
Now we're going to get John's father meeting the boys.
Fair enough, but John was not supposed to know anything about hunting so could be that Henry does the same thing that Mary did with Azazel, that is make some sort of a deal with a demon to keep John safe and away from the supernatural world.
If that happens, rehashed plot-line again.
He was a mechanic, not much to learn there. Until he married Mary he was clueless.
ReplyDeleteI have a huge crush on JDM, so would love to see him back, but don't want the writers to mess with his back story and some how he knew about hunting. That would ruin his story.
ReplyDeletePurgatory isn't wide open- at least not like Hell where any old demon can escape. Purgatory needs a rare spell or a human in Purgatory to open the portal.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it was a one time experience for Henry. Maybe he found himself by accident, transported?
ReplyDeleteOr maybe he can't go back and he already knocked up their paternal grandmother, and it would explain why John was still born and didn't know about the life until Mary and why he wouldn't have involvement in Sam and Dean's life(And John's too) because he's in the future.
ReplyDeleteYour right, Purgatory is definitely more difficult to get in and out of but not impossible as we have seen.
ReplyDeleteOnce it seemed more difficult to open the gates of Hell too; see Cold Oak when Azazel needed to get his demons out for his army.
But there were still demons slipping in and out before.
ReplyDeleteWas her father a cop though?
ReplyDeleteI hope they don't forget John didn't know. I mean, that would be the worst re-write ever, with all the books about John learning to hunt and his journal only having been started after Mary's death (when he became a hunter) etc.
And Mary's parents didn't like her dating him because John was a "civilian", a mechanic, not a hunter. Considering Carver wrote 4x03 "In The Beginning" I'd think he'd make sure whoever writes this episode would keep that in memory.
Yeah I know they don't recognize them. They can't for story purposes be noticed all the time, otherwise they wouldn't be able to hunt. Perhaps that was a bad example. I'm just saying they drop stuff sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI hope they don't change John either. That's why I'm thinking it's going to be he will get mind wiped or he had their grandma pregnant before and he gets stuck in the future.
This is good news, the upcoming episodes (11, 12) sound really interesting.
ReplyDeleteI cant believe there are fans already complaining that Dean doesn't have a storyline again? I'm sorry WTF?
LOL, I think some people ALWAYS see the glass half empty, instead of half full. For me this season is close to becoming my favorite..if it keeps going like it has and no more Bitten..;) Feral Dean is so dang HOT.
ReplyDeletethere grandfather is a time traveler her mother involve in the family business IS GROUND ZERO EPISODE...a.. PHOENIX EPISODE.....will be ..EPIC AWESOME,..yes,.yes,.yes
ReplyDeletemay be his dad was a hunter BUT didnt want his son involve for safety reason WORKS..no way in hell MARRIED his soul mate FATE OR DESTINY .seal there lives forever
ReplyDeleteWhat are you guys talking about John was Micheals meatsuit. Therefore Henry was too and it could mean that John actually had a brother maybe Nick was Johns brother or a relative . Soemhow there must have been a connection . Anyway I rather believe that he explain the angel war because after all they keep Cas hostage
ReplyDelete@isleofskye Benny is there to cause tension between the brothers . We know Sam was unhappy that Dean helped Benny to escape although we can feel lucky that the writers stopped making it a painful tension we can't hardly enjoy .
ReplyDeleteAmelia won't be what she seems to be and also cause tension between both brothers . Sam wanted to stop hunting cause of her or the dog lucky for us the writers didn't made it a mega huge fight
Closing the door of hell may be an arc but nobody said that they will succeed . We still don't know what the angels are up to it looks like they are spying on our boys and there is another question since Dean had angel roots and Sam Demon roots does it mean Sam will be thrown into hell too when they close it
He was a Marine who took to hunting when his wife died mysteriously. It's his reaction to that and subsequently the decisions he made about their lives after that that make the man. Mechanic was just his job. ;)
ReplyDeleteYes, I know that, and that is what I said..it was AFTER he married Mary that he became the John we know and love, well at least I do. ;)
ReplyDeleteHa! With you all the way. :)
ReplyDeleteWe have to say this sounds very interesting and we are very curious how it will play out on screen. New characters whether recurring or not bring always something original to the show and give us viewers a chance to see different sides about the Winchester brothers.
